  1. We won't know what they have until the games start. On paper (I know) they are starting to look solid.

As of today, we don't know it they can guard anyone. We don't know if anyone can consistently shoot from the perimeter. We don't know if Malik is capable of defending without fouling. We don't know if anyone other than OB wil attempt to rebound the ball. We think they found a point guard, and we think they have a physical presence inside. Too many questions today.

The plan should be get the talent first. That's a work in progress but so far it's looking good. Then see if the coaches have a clue on how to use the talent. CMW gets credit for taking steps to rebuild. But if they don't defend next season and still can't shoot, he's got to go. Spending too much to get poor results. Season four is make or break.

  2. Interested in how the offense will run with Rice at point. I appreciate what X brought in terms of toughness but his leadership ability and decision making were not consistent.

You never knew when X would lose focus. I won't miss the distracted sparring with the other team or the technical fouls.

X will be added to a long list of "what ifs" at IU. What if he didn't have the injury woes? What if he could keep his composure?

  3. We know uk will get a coach eventually. The problem is the longer it goes the more it eats into uk fan's psychey. How can anyone say no to them?

We also know once they hire someone their fans will declare it the best choice; their real first choice; and the savior. It's too predictable.

  4. You have to wonder what Caleb Furst was thinking last night. Three years in and he was a non-factor. He played one minute in the title game. I don't think he played at all against NC state. Just a spectator for the tournament. He could have contributed at IU. I think the kid can play.

  5. About two years in as uk coach Cal said he wasn't a lifer. Something about not wanting to coach into his 70s. If he does five years at Arkansas that puts him on the doorstep. I guess Arkansas is good with a five year window and hope to get a title out of it. My guess is the money and ego push him beyond five years. Still not sure why he stays in the South. Seems he'd be looking to go back East closer to home. Unless he feels Arkansas is on the brink right now.

  6. End of the day you are what your record says you are. This season IU was mediocre at best. A few flashes of possibility but not even close when playing the best teams and only marginally close to most tournament teams they played.

A team with no depth that can't shoot the three, doesn't really rebound at a high level, and isn't sure what they are doing on defense. A team that could not afford injuries but often ended up with key injuries.

If it wasn't for K Ware it would have been much uglier. His play, when not hurt, raised them to slighlty above mediocre in a down season for the conference overall.

  7. Agreed. Especially style of play. When you compare it to the Elite Eight teams you see a stark contrast this season. Movement of the ball and the players is a constant in better teams making them difficult to defend. IU had little movement and relied heavily on a post dribbling into a shot while the rest watched.

However, when they had JHS the season before with the size and strength to get by defenders, the offense looked more in line with the best teams.

CMW didn't adjust to his talent or lack thereof at the guard position.

  8. This is perhaps the most important question a coaching staff has to answer and it is continuous. It never stops due to the portal and early entries.

For IU specifically there's another question. After the season ended I suggested an autopsy is needed for the program. After decades of struggling to right the ship, it is clear there's more to it than what we see. What is the real problem?

My suggestion is to put together a group of trusted former players and coaches (not just IU alums) to dig into everything. Coach hiring process; recruiting; facilities; NIL; academics; and everything else tied to the program. Where are they at a top level and where do they fall short?

As fans, we want to assume they are a top program in most categories. Results say that's not true. It's also possible leadership is making the same assumptions. Group think is real and it can be death to any organization.
