  1. What positive aspect of the program did Fife contribute to or was responsible for? We never heard of games where he had the “scout” and did a great job. No recruiting wins and even worse, no momentum on the recruiting trail. Did he work directly with 1-2 players like a JG and focus on player development?

What exactly are we losing besides a nostalgic tie to better days?

Others, including Dakich, have said that Rabjohns does what IU administration wants.  He earns a living by having access to information from IU.

Yeah but this is the problem with assuming anything Dakich said is the full truth. He earns a living by starting shit about IU all the time. So the same skepticism you have re: Peegs applies to DD.

This has gotten out of hand for something that was pretty simple.

Rabby is an easy target and I think that makes it easier to dismiss what he said outright.

What I don’t see is folks trying to explain away all the other IU insiders like ITH, AC, that film guy, etc. saying almost the exact same thing as Rabby.

The funniest part about all of this is that I’m not sure we would’ve parted ways if Fife was tied to any commits or critical recruiting processes

Usually these things are more in the middle when it is made so public. IU is trying to validate firing one of their own and doing a very poor job of it.

I don’t think IU really cares to validate it. It’s Dane Fife. Outside of a small group of crazies like us, it doesn’t resonate.

I still think that most people probably don’t want to believe what has been posted and confirmed by numerous insiders because frankly, it sucks. That doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

I think Fife didn’t mean to be insubordinating. I think he was making a different point and he’d apologize for handling it poorly.  But I believe he’d say it was a mistake and not willful insubordination.  Maybe I’m wrong but that’s my interpretation.

In Rabbys interview he said he warned Fife not to go on Twitter with that and later Fife called him to say “you’re right, I got reprimanded.”   I took that to mean Fife was surprised.  So that’s why I think it was more a mistake.

I believe Fife’s point is, sure make your NIL money.  But when it’s serious time, let’s get down to it for the team.  That’s what it’s really about.  He wants it both ways.  Fife knows NIL is critical for recruiting.

I really don’t think he had bad intent.

I truly want to hear his side of the story.

I think this just shows that (1) He seems to disregard or ignore any external guidance or advice and (2) he consistently acted in a way that was very disconnected from the realities of the CBB landscape in 2022…and either he fundamentally couldn’t grasp this or he had a blatant disregard for it.

He knew that NIL is an advantaged recruiting area for IU and he still chose to undermine it. Whose interests was he serving in doing so? Because it wasn’t IUBB.

Either way, he doesn’t come across as having a ton of self-awareness or even discipline for that matter.

I love Fife and I’m forever appreciative of his time as a player. But I think folks are treating him with kid gloves right now. We’ve seen what happens when our assistants don’t recruit and perform. We should be ecstatic that we’re proactively addressing this for once.

I was giving an example and not a hard line.  But the point stands.  Win, and it doesn't matter.  Develop middling results as we have seen for five years, and the alumni will get restless.  And the alumni always win.  Ask Davis, Crean, and Archie how it goes when you lose the alumni.  And make no mistake, the alumni had it right in each instance.

They always have been and always will. Not sure if you’re suggesting that these events will make that worse.

Ultimately he has to win and it won't matter what any of us say.  But, if you don't win, stuff can get thrown back at you to create a narrative that you're ill-equipped.  This isn't fatal.  But Imagine Ya is leaving as some have said.  Then imagine next year or the year after, he starts making other changes.  If he isn't winning over 25 games a year and going deep in the tourney, he will be in a pressure cooker.  Dane Fife is incredibly popular.  There is no way in h-e-double hockey sticks that I am the only one on this.

Whatever.  Recruit and win.  And don't embarrass us.  Go 26-8 and get to the elite 8 next year and he gets a pass for this.  Go 20-13 with a first round exit and another assistant departs next year, and that vice grip around his neck tightens another notch.

Fife coached in a prominent role at MSU for a top coach for a decade with substantial recruiting and on-court successes.  He is not chopped liver.

He “only gets a pass” for this if he goes 26-8 and makes the Elite 8? It’s Dane Fife, not John Wooden. He was reprimanded by the AD for public comments he made and undermined CMW on several occasions. This thread reiterates all these instances.
