Do I like the Wild West? No. Will we thrive in it? I think IU has a perfect blend of NIL opportunities and a Coach who actually knows what NBA players look like and will develop them.

Our job is to create (which I believe Woodson already has) an environment where kids know their head coach understands what it takes to get the real payday which is the league.

Some of our comrades around the league need to focus on their own staffs creating that perfect blend. Multiple kids leaving each year. Easy to say NIL,etc....but usually there's something else as well.

hmm almost like someone might have predicted this

Three other things I'll say about NIL...

    Water finds its level

This isn't a Sam Gilbert scenario where benevolent old men ride around with bags of cash just so they can be close to a team.

This is business, and businesses make money or they go out of business...

Right? Not all of these $500k+ players are going to equate to team success. Sunk-cost fallacy will come into play at some point.

What happened to all the posts about these kinds of deals already happening behind closed doors pre-NIL?

See, I don't get the way Purdue or their fans are thinking about this...

There's nothing wrong, illegal, or unsavory about NIL money. If your school doesn't jump in quickly, they'll be buried...

NIL has pretty much superseded every aspect beside coach and coaching staff in college recruiting...sitting on the sidelines and lamenting how other schools are "cheating" is mind boggling to me...

There's even a solid argument that it's the more ethical route on top of all that.

CJ gotta put on 25lbs, like Bates did before we discuss his impact in college imo.

If he is 6-6/6-7... goodness there is a lot to work with.

What is he lacking in now, outside of strength? Asking because I've only seen highlights, but based off that I don't understand the discrepancy between his and Bates rankings

We may not hit top 5 every year, but the way Woodson has been executing suggests good recruiting success going forward.   Woody has a presence.  Also, notice that he is not afraid to recruit in a manner that says, "you aren't entitled to play or let alone start.  It will all be settled by performance."   That's the way it used to be when we were what we wanted to be.  I couldn't be happier that we are back to that.  Notice that Malik did not say a word about expecting to start.  After 20 years, the fan base has gotten accustomed to thinking we aren't getting a guy who isn't given a path to starting.

Then you look at the profile of the guys he is recruiting.  Gunn says he may actually be 6'7 by now and his wingspan is even longer.  Banks is long, agile, and mobile.  JHS is big for a guard.  Malik.  Switchability.  Versatility.  Length, quickness.  Winners.

Look at future classes and who he is going for.  It's very coherent.

Anyone know the deal on Gunn's ranking? I've only seen highlights, but dude looks like a stud and his frame and athleticism scream potential

    Do you have a comparison?

I'm not really the person to ask about comparisons. From what I've seen no comparisons come to mind. I don't think McRoberts or Evans had the guard skills that Sisely has at his age. His skills are a lot more modern.

I sure hope Fife has been in his ear.  Basketball isn't just Basketball and you can't just roll the ball out and play everyone the same.  You have to adjust or you're going to get your ass beat.  That's especially true when you're playing a Wisconsin, Syracuse, Virginia, etc.   I still doubt Woody has figured that out.

Hoping Matta shares some insight too. Good thing Woodson's shown he listens to his assistants.

  8. I really wonder about the criticism towards Lander in this topic. Dude is essentially a still a freshmen. I'd bet Tamar received comparable or a little less development at IMG last year than Lander got under Archie. Not a Lander fan boy, just don't understand why some people think its so necessary to address his shortcomings. I love Geronimo but he was mud on Sunday, why don't we have a 4 page thread criticizing all his shortcomings?

Lander showed significant improvement from last year, no doubt. Does he still have room to grow? Absolutely. Can we be happy with the game-to-game progress we see in young players under a 1st year coach 4 games into the season? I hope so.

Offensive rebounds are important; however you have to balance 5 crashing the boards and also getting back on transition defense.  You can't always have both.

Also, they are using the bump and jump technique which NBA and teams like MSU use.  This will take some time to master.  They wil improve.

Love all of this. Not super worried about the shortcomings we showed in this game yet. Feels like you're seeing the progress/learning happening in real time.

All of it. Absolutely all of it. Thank you Tom Allen for producing a team I can absolutely be proud of. This stuff means a lot to me.

This isn't Christmas or Thanksgiving.... this is a Wednesday in July when it's 95 out. They gave up video games for the day, whatever else to serve others.

(Not that someone is wrong for helping on those days)... just wanted to point out how unique this is. Good on them.

It's incredible. Feels like its our payment for dealing with so much heartbreak and losing from the past. Honestly makes it all worth it in my book.

Well this is interesting, someone asked which opponent he is looking forward with. His answer is Notre Dame, and well, Purdue plays ND 3 times over the next 5 year period....

EDIT: Stanford also plays Against Notre Dame too, just realized it

Just went through his story and my gut says the positive IU stuff is damage control. Hope I'm wrong.

That is the million dollar question.  Will we go from a 12-15 to a 15-12, 17-10, etc.

Is the talent there and was a coaching issue.  Was it a talent issue alone?  Or was it a combination.

I really do hope we have the success everyone seen to want to predict already.  Allot of championship talk about there already and every recruit is a perfect fit for Coach Woodson's approach to basketball.  And we haven't yet seen a single practice let alone a game plan.  I am afraid putting this coaching staff that high up on a pedestal is going to cause allot of heartache if they can't live up to the Second Coming of Coach Knight mentality allot of people are having right now.

I do hope everyone is right.  I just can't jump on that wagon yet.  I plan to walk a little further down the path before getting excited about anything IU men's basketball.  But then again, I am a terrible fan who should go back to Peegs

No one can predict the future so I respect the caution. At the same time, we were close in a lot of those loses this year, as Trayce touched on in his press conference. The difference between 12-15 and 15-12 (or better) came down to a couple buckets here and some better execution there. That combined with the everything Woodson has done in one week has made me the most optimistic for IUBB I've been since 2012-13.

Interesting read. Seems a bit petty at times, but the part about not adjusting to remove the double teams of Howard is a bit concerning. Hopefully (and I would think) CMW has learned from that and is more open to input and adjustments.

Let's hope part of Matta's role is addressing things like that if they come up.

Allen seems like one of those guys who would turn down an extra million in order to give it to his assistants.  I would guess we'll go to Allen and basically let him tell us what he wants.

I think we have some decent incentives for different accomplishments, but I would like to see some of those upped.  Those almost pay for themselves.  More wins, more fans, more money coming in to pay for the money going out.

Didn't he already do that with some assistants last year with his bowl bonus?
