I went to, on average, 30 Komet games a year as a teenager. He also was the inspiration for Mike Doc" Emrick, probably my favorite professional announcer these days.

Listened to Hilliard Gates announce both Ft Wayne Sectional 1and2, Regionals and Semi-State.

Fisch goes back to my student days in the mid to late 70's.

The state of Indiana has been blessed with some awesome announcers

Fort Wayne Sectional 1 and 2.  Haven't heard that terminology in years.  Hilliard also did the ACAC tournament as well.

I watched many games sitting on one of the wooden folding chairs that the Coliseum put down for the tournament.

Also sat near the organ that Jack Lois used to play for the Komet games

I spent a many of times there myself.  I still remember sitting right behind Hilliard and Dick Defay as they called the 1983 Fort Wayne Regional Championship.  One for the ages.

Hilliard was also the voice of the Mad Anthony's charity golf tournament back in its heyday. Brought in major celebrities and various PGA players and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities.

I saw RMK and Keady play and schmooze at the event. Dane Fife was invited to play in2002 shortly after the Final Four run and was so lit that he had to be "escorted " around the course by one of the marshalls

My memories of my departed dad are tied into the 500 as well. Not sure exactly why. I think I take comfort from the traditions before the race starts. The people and details change, but the events and the order they come in don't. It reminds me of my father. My wife (36 years of marriage) knows to leave me alone while I watch the pre-race stuff on the tube.

Cool story as well, and thanks for sharing, too.
