milehiiu
Question is based on what has happened at Colorado State, and what happened at Indiana University, under Knight. Should all practices be open to the public. Or closed ? Searching the internet.... there is a wide division as to what to hold. Some D-1 coaches have no problem with holding open practices. Others, say they don't want what they are practicing to leak out into the opposition. Then there is the third option as to what happened at Colorado State and at IU with Neil Reid. Bob Knight Chokes Neil Reed So.... the question is. HSN 3.0. Open or closed practices ?
NCHoosier32
closed without a doubt. as a high school coach, no question mine were always closed. can't imagine as a college coach. you have to have control of your practice environment. you'd start having crazy parents and everyone else wanting to attend and being a distraction. As a high school coach. I highly respect your input. ( I was not aware you were a coach, and greatly appreciate your being a part of our forum, upon learning of that) On the flip side..... other than letting your opponents knowing about what your are practicing... what is there to hide ? And would it not be different on a college level versus a high school level ? I guess, I am trying to get at coaches who are abusing their players... either verbally or physically. IMHO.... this is not a simple question... with a simple answer.

You have to be careful the other teams are not trying spy on you, just look at NE and spy gate.
Seeking6
High level coaches are both neurotic and paranoid which is probably why they are successful. To me...always closed. Why would I potentially offer up information or let someone else see something I'm teaching or coaching.

I do concede that. Especially, when injuries have occurred. That alone, would be a reason to close practices.

I go back to Eustachy and Knight.... as to why they would not want the public to see how they abuse/abused players in practice.

IU and our beloved fans looked the other way on behavior for decades. Deep down we knew he was probably crossing the line but we also justified it by saying the boys will turn into better men when done. And more times the guys that played for Coach Knight turned into productive/successful players/citizens/people. I always remember the split screen on TV right after Knight was fired. One side was Winston Morgan who turned into a successful casino guy I think in Vegas and the other side was Calloway who looked like a guy trying to get $ for his next week. If you have to open practices just in case your coach is an abusive blowhard, then you need to just go ahead and fire your coach anyways. Practices need to be closed. It’s not even about intel getting out or opposition spying, it’s about the focus of your team. Players need to be locked in and focused during practices, not peering around to see who is in attendance. Not checking out good looking girls in stands, or talking to family members. It’s largely about focus and removing distraction than anything else. I remember when I was in college, our trainers had to walk through the gym to back and fourth from the training room and their offices. One year my coach had to put in a rule that only the head athletic trainer was allowed to walk through or by in the gym during practices, because many of the student trainers were girls and they’d distract us and sometimes stop and talk with players that were sitting that drill or whatever. Coaches hate distractions during practice.

Interesting post, thanks for the perspective. I do question rather or not today we would still turn a blind eye to Knight? Obviously there will always be some that do, but would it be so collective? I also question the part about turning boys into men; and it's a line I have used before. Are we measuring them becoming men by their success and their ability to seem like respectable people? Many of them check those boxes, but how is the emotional health? I know many, many people that never deal with emotional abuse and distress when they are young that are deeply hurt individuals when they are older yet they remain productive. Just some food for thought.

LOL Always worked under a 24 hr no contact rule. May not believe it but never a parent issue face to face. I go by 3 basic rules with dealing with parents 1. We will not discuss playing time as soon as u do be prepared to turn in your sons equipment 2. We won't talk about any other player your son only 3. Once you begin to raise your voice cuss get unprofessional meeting over. Call my AD and the 3 of us can meet. In over 20yrs no real issues
