IU @ Northwestern Pre-Game Thread

Recommended Posts

The 23rd ranked Hoosiers (5-0, 2-0) travel to Northwestern (2-2, 0-1) on Saturday 10/5 for a 3:30pm ET kickoff on BTN. Indiana opens as a heavy favorite. The game will be played at Martin Stadium which is normally the home for the NW lacrosse and soccer teams but is being used a temporary home for NW football as Ryan Field undergoes renovations. For those curious, the seating capacity of Martin Stadium is 12,023.

Northwestern has won 13 of the last 16 games in the series dating back to 1994. IU won the most recent meeting 34-3 in Bloomington in 2019.

Coming off a game where we won by 14 points despite a -4 turnover margin, looking for a sharper effort from the Hoosiers and another double digit victory as we head into our bye week. Not letdowns, no letups, lets Go Hoosiers!

NW has scored 7 touchdowns in 4 games.   Hoosiers have scored 33 touchdowns in 5.  I think we will give their defense nightmares and their offense fits.

Statically, their defense is not that bad, I believe they are ranked in the Top 45, but a questionable pass defense. Their offense, well, ummm not good.

This is a little more interesting of a matchup than I first thought. SP+ has NW’s offense ranked 124th, which is worse than both FIU and Charlotte. But their defense is ranked 21st, which is 6th in the Big Ten - just ahead of Oregon. So you’d hope to see a dominant performance from our defense, but this is a legitimate test for our offense. If the offense continues to look like they have all year, that’d be a promising sign for once we get into the meat of the big ten schedule.

Field position them to death, early, eventually the damn will break.

I'm predicting something like 31-10. I think our offense might get slowed down but will still be effective. Our D causes problem for them resulting in good field position and maybe some turnovers. But what do I know? I predicted turnovers would be a key in the MD game and despite our turnovers, we overcame them and won going away.

Yeah, I agree on the field position point. Even if our offense gets slowed down, good field position should still result in points from shorter drives. But looking forward a bit, I’d like for our offense to still be efficient and move the ball vs NW. The rest of our schedule, except for Purdue, is loaded with good to great defensive teams. And really OSU is the only great offensive team we’ll face. Here’s where SP+ has the offense/defense rankings for the rest of the year after NW:

Nebraska: off - 83rd, def - 4th

Washington: off - 28th, def - 25th

MSU: off - 111th, def - 26th

Michigan: off - 63rd, def - 5th

OSU: off - 9th, def - 2nd

PU: off - 84th, def - 92nd

So 5 of the 6 remaining games after NW are against teams with better defenses than offenses. And 3 of those teams have significant gaps between the defense and offense, which is similar to NW. While NW is worse than all of these teams except PU, NW will be a good barometer for the types of teams we’ll be playing the rest of the way.

DJ Warnell in the portal, was a key SPT player for us…

I hated to see this! Bugged me more than McCulley going in did.  Whatever, though. Best wishes to him!

However, don't let the door hit .....

UCF’s star receiver called it quits yesterday and entered the portal. It will spiral out of control soon, strong feeling we will be seeing players transferring mid-season and immediately playing.
