SIU-Edwardsville Postgame

Mgbako was fantastic, obviously, but I see this team relying on different players depending on matchups. Woodson’s offensive scheme isn’t conducive to spot shooters, and that apparently won’t change. Woodson and his hockey lineup rotations still drive me crazy. That’s all for now.

Watching how fundamentally sound the football team is makes an effort like this even more painful to watch.

I kept thinking the same exact thing.

Like last year, they look undisciplined and don’t execute fundamental stuff. They kept letting SIUE getting back into the game. We’re going to give that team a 11-3 and 8-0 runs?

Mgbako looked great though. Seemed like the only player interested in rebounding tonight.

Well that was like sitting on my front lawn watching the grass grow. Mtaco is a pro. Rice might be the fastest player next to Allen Iverson i've ever seen on a basketball court but he needs to slow down. The D is there from Rice and Carlyle but neither can throw it in the ocean from the bench. Hutton  should never take his warm ups off. Woody is Woody, we all know what that is. Mtaco is the only shooter on this team. We will beat teams with defense and the post game. same shit different year. Oh and its embarrassing how  out of shape this team is.

This was McNeeley’s line tonight, albeit against inferior competition.

     MIN
FG
3PT
REB
AST
PF
PTS
27 6-11 3-6 10 2 0 18

I understand that he and Mgbako play the same position and have similarities in their respective game. I’d give the nod to Mgbako. That being said, it’d be nice to have his shot on this team. Only so many balls to go around here, but man I miss having guys that can knock down shots unconsciously. The Crean teams couldn’t play a lock of defense outside of that 2 year stretch with Zeller, but they were pretty fun to watch on the other end. And no I don’t want Tom back, and I’ll give this season some time. That being said, it’s hard to watch the same style year after year. Shooters want to come to IU, but I don’t think we’ll get any great ones until we move on.

I agree about Hatton. Also, cupps I’m starting to feel the same way. He just brings nothing to the table IMO. I like what Woody did after he saw hatton and cupps struggle. He played Reneau at the 5 when Ballo subbed out. Personally my rotation would be

guards: rice Carlyle them have Galloway come in for Carlyle then take over for rice when he needs a breather.

small forward: Mgbako and Tucker off bench for him. It truly annoys me though when Mgbako is absolutely on a heater and Woodson takes him out. Who cares if he’s a little tired the dude literally couldn’t miss at that point…

power forward: Reneau, Goode, and Mgbako

center: Ballo and Reneau.

I think a decent amount of turnovers tonight are cut down once everyone gets used to each other. Rebounding on the defensive end is still a problem. The game is over and we win by 40 if we stop letting them get 2nd and 3rd chances…I’m sure coaches work on it in practice but at some point in time players need to take pride in rebounding because currently they don’t and it shows.

I think Goode and most likely Carlyle are pressing right now. I’m also not sure if the staff changed something with Goode’s shot and he’s not comfortable with it yet or not.

we definitely have more talent but when I think woody struggled is recruiting the exact same player. Rice, Carlyle, TG, and BT are all the exact same player. He really needed another shooting guard who could be super lights out.

Woody could have all 5-star players and the offense would still suck.  He is unwilling to make changes.  It is simply feed the paint every possession while 4 other guys stand around on the perimeter.  I was at the game and it was even uglier in person than what most saw on TV.  He also continues to sub incessantly, killing any and all momentum.  This needs to be his last year.

We’re up 20-9 looking like we’re about to take them to the woodshed and Woodson promptly does his head scratching subbing (per the norm) and we immediately fall back into playing poorly and allowing awful teams to “hang around.”

And yes…we dropped 3 spots to #45 in Kenpom despite the win (something woody’s teams are good at).

As a die hard IU fan I was and am a bit apathetic about the start of the season, which is crazy considering the preseason ranking and talent on the roster.  Maybe the football team as something to do about that, but I put my finger on it last night.

i just do not like watching Woody’s teams play. Plain and simple. I like and root for the players, but when it all comes together it’s just so…..meh.

I get no enjoyment from watching these guys standing around and watch the ball while it gets forced into the post.  I get no enjoyment from watching just about every opponent know, at multiple times per game, we’ll lose focus and give up a big run. I absolutely can not stand that we STILL do not box out. And sometimes I wonder if Woody purposely tries to kill momentum. Same story different roster

I don’t want to blame individual players for not taking pride in how they perform because I firmly believe they do. I just wonder if as a unit they are held to anything above an average standard because this program does the bare minimum with the talent we have on the roster. Overachieving expectations seems like a distant dream.

i hope I’m over-reacting and this season is a success. I’ll still watch. I’ll still root for everybody, including Woody. Doesn’t mean I’ll be enjoying what I see on the court….even in victories. I also fear the the most likely outcome of a first weekend exit will lead to coaching purgatory. Not bad enough to move on. Not good enough to be excited about the future. Hence, extended apathy.

*edit/addition. Looks like I’m not the only one with apathy. It’s the first game of the year and the morning after we are only on page 1 of the postgame thread!

The only person that is looking to make plays rather than his own shot is Trey.

0 extra passes.

The ball just sticks to players hands.

0 inside out shots.

Rebounding in stretches was atrocious.

Defense was good.

Love Carlyle. He was off offensively, but still absolutely dialed in on D.

Nobody tell Purdue7 that there were 2 5 stars on the floor for loose balls last night.

I definitely think I have some level of apathy when it comes to IU basketball this season. Some of it may be the unexpected success of the football team, and some of it definitely might be the fact that I have a baby daughter.

Honestly, I was furious at the fact that IU kept Woodson for a fourth season. But then we got some really nice transfers and I was willing to give this team a chance. I wasn’t able to watch the game last night, but listened on the radio on my drive home from work.

I was hoping that the talent of this roster would be able to make up for Woody’s lack of coaching ability. And although it’s early, the fact that they struggled against such a poor opponent makes me doubt that this team will be anything other than disappointing.

It sucks having a small part of you want the team to fail because it makes it easier for everyone to move on from this coaching staff, but I just can’t deal with another underwhelming season where our Kenpom ranking finishes 30 spots lower than in the preseason.

I just have zero faith that Woodson is a good enough coach to lead a team to even the second weekend in March.

I was unhappy with some of our performance last night but not as discouraged as a lot of you seemed to be. I think some of you are exaggerating on the offense from last night. I didn't see every possession where we just posted up a player and tried to feed the post. Did it happen yes but not like some of you are making it sound like. I saw plenty where we did a high ball screen and the other 3 were outside the 3 so the whole lane was clear. I also saw plenty of lineups where Malik was the 5 and was surround by 4 guards and wings.

The two areas of concern for me were the turnovers and rebounding. I did like that we tried to get out and use tempo but it led to some careless turnovers. We just can't let the opponents get some many offensive rebounds especially when we have the size advantage. We started out so well rebounding but when we started to dib that was when the problem started.

I just watched the most recent Cig interview on McAfee. He said (paraphrased):

"It's all about high standards and not compromising or lowering your standards. If you're not striving or preparing day in and day out then you are falling behind and your competition is getting better."

I know it's one game, but in context with previous years, when I see the basketball team playing like dog crap against inferior opponents, to me it looks like standards are being compromised. When it happens repeatedly I wonder what the standards are, and if the team is, day in and day out, held to said standards.
