Bustout
Didn’t Archie talk about implementing a new offense this past off-season? For all of you X and O gurus (I’m not one), have you noticed any major changes from the past? If they truly did try to implement a new offense, given COVID, this was probably not the best off-season to do so, but maybe it was to install now for future. Slow growing pains. Could that explain why some kids don’t know where they’re supposed to be some times and maybe some of the inefficiencies are due to this being “new”? Maybe with a full off-season, next year will be better? Just curious.
jojo123
Still too much dribbling and not enough off ball movement. NO weak side screens. this is not an offense they are running it is a bunch of offensive sets. Exactly what Crean did.

I used to be a college basketball junkie and watch a game anytime there was one was on. Now, I find myself watching reruns of Roseanne. Most of them are unwatchable. 2

Yes, most episodes of Roseanne are unwatchable. It says something that you'd rather subject yourself to that than watch college basketball. 1
John S
These sets encourage slow and unflowing offensive play. Look at MD to see more entertaining play,,,,although they're not winning much without a good big man.
BGleas
I don't recall any talk of a new offense. I recall talk of playing faster and having more perimeter options than last year, which I think has come to fruition, but I don't recall any talk last off-season about a "new" offense being installed. It was still basically just lineup/personnel stuff though, not a new system.
5fouls
I heard we were going to focus on the running game. Turns out, it's not a particularly sound strategy for college basketball because it results in a lot of travels.

Bilas was slobbering over OSU’s offensive system with all of their sets and combinations off of their sets. Said it was beautiful to watch. Archie uses them but not to that extent. It can be very effective complement to good ball movement.
Euroclydon
Pretty clear things did not materialize as Archie envisioned them in that article. The three guard lineup has had its ups and downs with Armaan showing glimpses of being special while Rob is essentially a defensive specialist that still gets beat too much. Al is Al and as long as he doesn't have to dribble he can be a sound spot up shooter and shows a willingness to be "the guys" late in games (with mixed results). Lander just started showing signs over the past few weeks but has not made a major impact yet. Galloway started out on fire but cooled with his injury and Leal offers some hope for the future shooting the ball but nothing earth shattering yet. Bottom line - the perimeter game has not been consistently good enough to open up the space for TJD and Race that Archie referenced. Brunk has not been a factor at all and likely will not be at any point this season. Hunter is bipolar with key plays followed by unbelievable fouls for a guy this far into his college career. Ultimately whatever plan Archie had has 1) Never had the full allotment of players available to get there, and 2) the team in general has not consistently showed up in all phases of the game. Mostly reliable on defense but still too many breakdowns against good teams and the offense has been embarrassing more often than not. I'm pulling for the team and Archie but time is running out. Tough conference or not, close loses don't get you anything and they certainly won't lead to the big dance. Gonna have to win some key games down the stretch. Absolutely cannot lose to Minnesota this week. Edited February 15, 2021 by Euroclydon
addictedtoIU
This is why off-season chatters are hard to believe. Fans complained so much about slow and ineffective offense, so coach had to say something about it. We experienced a lot of this in Crean's days. Crean said tons about defense; it was just that no one saw it on the court. Just because coach said it, doesn't mean we're actually going to see it. I think of it as 'torture by hope'. If more than a few years have passed and we still don't see something, it's as good as we're probably not going to see it.

He basically said this year IU will have a 3-guard lineup as opposed to the bigger lineup from last year. The lineup will allow IU to play faster and have more emphasis on shooting from the perimeter. Why I said "in theory" is because that is tough to execute when your point guards combine to shoot under 40% from the field and barely 30% from 3. But we have played smaller and faster compared to last year, especially when Franklin and the freshmen are in.

Indiana Needs an offense that can be successful with basketball skills and some athletes.

Oftentimes, I feel like this team is 'confident Rob Phinissee' away from a top 25 team. I can only hope Archie pushes all the right buttons for Phinissee to lift up his spirits.
