  1. Poster said Miller did damage to his reputation this year. Strongly disagree. Been watching Archie Miller's teams for years, including at Dayton. I know and others who are in the know know...it is about the guards. Unfortunately Rob and Al have not gotten going consistently this season... If fans cannot see that then that is telling. It then can be blamed on development. Of Rob? Of Al? Yeah, right. He really needs that PG to be among the top in the B1G. It can be blamed on recruiting. Maybe... But damage his reputation. No. Shooting...yeah, they suck. TJD doesn't hustle on every play. Heck, Jordie Hulls didn't hit every shot. Just most of them. And his defense wasn't the best. And TJD doesn't really use both hands to finish. So what? The Big Ten is the best I can remember except for RMK's early years. They were all tough. Archie Miller is a very good coach. Indiana should give him enough time. He really didn't get a full 4 years of his players. Not yet. Damaged his reputation. Yeah, right.
  2. I think that Archie Miller will be back next year. Only way he wouldn't be back is if a donor or donors are found to make the buyout(s) happen and if there is a great alternative head coach available. Wins are not the only criteria by which this coach or any coach may be evaluated. Certainly, the whole body of work when looking at wins and losses is bad for IU and Archie. So I would not be surprised if there is a change. I actually can see the team being lots better next year given a few positives. We all know what they are. The AD likely is not ready to pull the trigger on Archie Miller. Crean did not leave the cupboard full. In addition he and the previous administration may have just about poisoned the well. Injuries have hobbled the team...year after year. And Covid-19 may just give Archie Miller a bye year. These rumors happen. Only the AD knows for sure. He is likely on the fence and very patient.
  3. I believe in miracles. Next year, with 2 more grad transfers, shooters start to hit, plays are made, Lander becomes a stud, TJD finishes every shot, pack line extends and contests every 3. Dakich quits and joins a cult then takes over as head coach of Purdue. Referees up in Wisconsin only call UW for fouls. OSU gets hammered by the NCAA for Gym Jordan etc. Izzo quits. Michigan basketball is only as good as their football. IU competes for the top of the B1G. Goes to the Elite 8 and the sky is the limit. Banner time? You heard it first here. I never lie...and I always tell the truth.
  4. I was not posting on this board back when Archie Miller was hired. But, did post a bit on two others. Have lived in Dayton since 1982. The Dayton area supports the University of Dayton basketball team. It is a big deal. Archie Miller took over there from Brian Gregory. Gregory left Dayton much like Crean left Indiana...recruiting for both had fallen off significantly and they both were not good fits. Archie Miller then got lucky and did a good job with UD and he fit. The players all shared the ball and got along fairly well. They helped each other. Archie Miller had recruited basketball players that were long and were players. The point guards got the ball into the offense quickly. Indiana fans did not want someone who wasn't 'proven'. Brad Stevens, Mark Few were some names. When Miller was announced fans were all over the spectrum on the hire. I graduated from IU when IU went undefeated. I love IU basketball. I am no expert on basketball or college sports coaches. But having followed UD before Miller, and having followed IU before RMK (a little), I thought that Archie Miller might make the short-list...but was pleasantly surprised that he was chosen. I thought that he was a very good coach. Obviously, at Dayton, had success for Dayton that had not been there in decades. The keys were his teams played like teams, had great guards, were more than decent with the packline, he made adjustments, had decent plays when needed. What is different today with Indiana is multifaceted. Indiana has not had a great point guard during Miller's tenure. Indiana cannot get the offense going consistently. Shooters do not score. Defense cannot stop the quick drive. There is no flexibility or depth on the bench. Other teams disrupt Indiana. Miller can send in plays but execution is not there. To me it is clear why Archie Miller at UD was more successful than at Indiana. Three things: 1. Basketball in the B1G has moved away from the pipeline to Indiana...call it momentum, for instance look at high school players and the system; 2. Defenses around the conference are tougher and Indiana is easy to defend against; 3. Miller is not getting basketball players that are long and motivated. All that makes Archie's coaching and X's and O's moot. Indiana has been snake bit. Archie Miller has been unlucky on the recruiting and player sides of the equation. A lot of that was the administration (what coach would come to Indiana the way they are treated), Crean burned bridges and over hyped everything, Sampson self destructed with the administration shooting Indiana in the head twice, RMK self destructed and the administration botched everything about that, Davis wasn't going to end well, unfortunately... And the fans have not really changed. Lots want an immediate solution...and there isn't one. Glass tried to grow one but one could argue that Miller has not had enough time. Without getting all emotional, ask yourself why Glass put such a high buyout in the coach's contract. It was not a mistake. I hope that Archie Miller turns Indiana basketball around. I will believe it when I see it. Archie Miller is a button-down type. More in the mold of Coach K or Coach Wooden. I say give him more time. Maybe send a point guard and a shooter to Indiana if you have one or the other. It would help. I do not see Archie Miller being in over his head. I see a good coach having growing pains...partly because of the baggage that IU gave itself and him. That is what I mean that IU has been snake bit. It does not mean that he should not be let go after next year. It does mean that whomever gets hired after him will have 5 years to walk on water. Then rinse and repeat.
  5. Here is one summary about the matter. Being in Dayton for the last 35 years, I do remember a little about the incidents.Dyshawn Pierre suspended over sexual assault allegation (larrybrownsports.com) Seemed to be handled by the University of Dayton and by Archie Miller as the issues should have been handled. Fred Glass trusts Archie Miller's decision making off the court (indypressfoundation.org)
  6. We had reservations at the lodge in Letchworth State Park but the pandemic happened. We love chasing waterfalls. From the trickles in San Diego to the St. Lawrence and Niagara. If ever in Mid TN check out Fall Creek Falls State Park when it is wet. Black River Falls in NE WV is fun. Got a job offer from the Army Corp of Engineers when I graduated from UW-M. Really fascinated by the navigation and earthworks and IntraCoastal Waterways. But accepted a job in Dayton OH...in water. Then transferred to Aviation...Dayton International Airport. Wife really was not excited about Mobile AL...HQ for the ACOE. I've been losing arguments ever since. The Miami - Erie Canal goes through Dayton...to Cincinnati. There was a bridge that took the canal across the Mad River near downtown. Believe it or not.
  7. I was in the Navy. Based in Groton CT. Road trips from there to Misquamicut RI, Newport RI, Cape Cod, Boston, NYC, Albany NY, Seaside Hts NJ, etc. Learned to snow ski at Okemo and Killington VT. Check out the coast of Maine and the history of whaling in RI. Bushkill Falls along the Delaware River is cool. Burlington VT is great. Montreal is fun. 1000 Islands is underrated. Years ago, walked and window shopped from Wall Street to Central Park...was staying with a friend in Soho. Got excused from a bar in NYC after a St. Patrick's Day Parade.
  8. This Friday we are driving 2 days to Estero Beach FL. Gotta VRBO overlooking the beach. Pool, beer, beach, beer, kayaking, beer, balcony, wine, Topper's Rhum, restaurants outside, beer on tap, short stroll on the beach to a bar on the beach, beer on tap. Rinse, repeat. Then to near John's Pass near St. Petersburg. Sharing a condo with another couple. On the beach in search of the perfect day. Definitely Reds Spring Training! Had appointments changed for my first shot. Weather delayed it. Bummer. Really wanted my first shot before going on vacation. Late summer we are thinking of going NE. Waterfalls, lakes in PA, then CT for family. Newport RI, Boston, Cape Cod, Princeton NJ. San Diego for Thanksgiving...maybe Maui. Probably go to Portugal in 2022...and a little of Spain.
  9. IU by10 74 IU 64 Rutgers...just because.
  10. Worked very close with Air Traffic when doing Noise Studies and Capacity Studies back when Dayton had Emery Air and USAir hubs. Was unbelievable and enlightening about the windows in the sky that jets flew into and out of. Due to cargo ops up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys...the radars bloom at night.
  11. Live in Dayton city limits...far northeast...north of the Air Force Museum. Worked as Chief of Engineering and Planning at Dayton International Airport. Best friend and I hit OSU vs IU here and there...in football and in basketball. UD basketball is a hoot. Wright State is fine and is cheap and one can get in anytime. The Crystal Pistol is long gone...Wavebid > Lot Details There is a band called Crystal Pistol. Tempus Fugit.
  12. I live in Ohio. Like Indiana they are significantly reactionary here. The worship OSU. Makes me ill. I haven't touched rope since...well almost not since college. Liked it too much. Had to clean myself up so my memory and motivation came back. Got myself together. But now I yearn for IU basketball to win each and every game. Archie Miller needs more time. Made some recruiting errors. Had bad luck with guards and OAD. Give him a long chance. He really is something else given a good PG. Beat Rutgers. Ever been there? The campus is worse than W. Freakin Laffy. And it is New Jersey for crying out loud. I like draft lager, ambers, bocks, and bourbon. And IU basketball. Go Hoosiers!
  13. Some say it's over...Stick a fork in IU and Archie Miller and this team. Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when Kentucky was ahead and then we got the Wat Shot? Was it over when Syracuse was ahead and Keith Smart hit that shot? Was it over when Kent Benson stole the game from Michigan? Hell no!... It ain't over. What the heck happened to the Indiana fans I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. 'Ooh, we're afraid to go with you we might get dissed... Well, just kma from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Their guards are dead men. Their big man...dead! This requires a really stupid and futile gesture. I say we cut down the nets at the end of the game to celebrate not being Rutgers. That is after beating them like a rug! IU 74 Rutgers 64.
  14. I want Indiana University basketball to be Indiana University basketball...competing yearly at the top of the Big Ten. Making deep runs into the NCAAT. I believe that Archie Miller is a good coach that is growing. I also think that the basketball gods have put a hex on certain players at Indiana over the last couple of three years. I think that Archie needs more time. But, I do understand that results say that may be in doubt. Furthermore, it is clear to me that because of the buyout and other things that Archie may be here for not only one year but maybe more. This season has not played out. I am frustrated with where the team's performance is to date. I'm sure that the coaching staff and the AD is too. I am waiting for the tide to turn and I envision Archie Miller pulling this team together. TJD just may start leading the team to greatness. Brunk's loss, because of his leadership, is likely bigger than we realize. The lack of great upperclassmen and leadership on the team is hurting the effort game in and game out. They have to clean it up this year and Archie Miller has to bring in some quality players ASAP. I really do not see the AD pulling the rug out from under Coach Miller.
  15. Archie has to get this team into the NCAAT. I really want him to survive this and for IU to excel. But the PG and guard and lack of shooting are killing IU. But in all of that is basketball IQ. These guys do not get it that one cannot turnover the ball like they do. And they have to put in full effort on defense. And assist each other on offense. Is all that up to the coach? Heck yeah it is. Get some smart (older) players out there. Replace the PG now. Not the coach. Replace the coach and some on the team will transfer. There goes the chance for them to get old again.
  16. It is tough to predict the future needs relative to taxes. We have almost exactly the same amounts of each. That gives one flexibility in the future.
  17. Level month-to-month billing here in W. Ohio...$158/month. We have an all electric house. 2400 Sq Ft. 2 story with full basement. Don't run the AC in summer unless it gets over 87 degrees...generally. I don't recommend variable rates on anything. Mortgages will kill you. And we see what is happening in Texas. One thing for sure about global warming...the climate variability will increase dramatically. Thank goodness there might be a temporary break, though. Seems a lot of heat may have escaped the atmosphere recently...not kidding. High pressure over the north pole somehow may have radiated the heat outward in an unprecedented fashion. That may cause the polar vortex to not wander like it has done recently.
  18. My neighbor puts corn out for deer here in W. Ohio. I asked her to stop because it was not good for deer and attracts them. (They feed on my flowers and vegetables.) But be advised that even the State of NY has prohibited putting corn out for deer. Evidently their normal feed is leaves. Not the carbohydrates and sugar in corn. That stuff can cause deer digestive problems. And it upsets their feeding habits. Not to mention overpopulation problems if it comes to that. My neighbor doesn't like government regulations and advice from know-it-alls. I told her it was bad for the deer and she did stop. She is from upstate NY and heck, they feed deer all the time. ..she says. I had to stop saying anything. She is very nice and a wonderful neighbor. I'm building this 12' high barrier around my yard with 30 lb test fishing line. Not kidding.
  19. Fell in love with both soccer and hockey. Soccer while at IU in the mid 70's. Rented a house at 505 E 5th Street. The Phi Oh Phi house. Had soccer players there. The game is fun to watch when it is on Big Ten Network. I can sit and watch whole games but my wife can't. Hockey is a great sport. Went to UW-Madison after graduating in Business at IU-B. Had season tickets to the football games and to hockey. Hockey at UW was a magical experience. "Is dis not dee winnig net? Yah dis is dee winnig net! Is dat not dee losing net? Yah dat is dee losing net!" Been to watch OSU vs UW in Columbus OH. Been to some semi-pro games here in Dayton OH. Up in Madison WI, each high school flooded their practice football field and voila it is a hockey rink. Great place to ice skate...near where I lived up there. And the lakes, too. Have my own skates...but not even decent on them any more with my bad back. Baseball and basketball were huge in my neighborhood in Evansville when I was in grade and high schools.
  20. True that Loyer is out due to injury. Watts wasn't effective as PG because of his turnovers. Word is that Watts told Izzo that he did not want to play PG. He is more of a SG. But then Loyer went down. Izzo is scrambling.
  21. MSU Coach Izzo is shaking up his lineup. PG Loyer is out and Hoggard is to start. But that's not all. Regardless IU 72 - MSU 63. Will MSU try to slow Phin? Will TJD be helped by excellent assists? Will Hunter score in double digits? Will Lander miss 3 3-point shots in a row? Will MSU score at will in the paint? Will Race have a breakout day? Will TJD hit 70% of his frees? Will Archie Miller show more emotion than Izzo? Will Archie Miller have some fun? Stay tuned.
  22. My favorite platitude or advice: Listen and respond with empathy (not with the intent to just respond). If one is tired or in a hurry, this is difficult to do. It doesn't mean to agree with someone. It means that they have a perspective or a point that is important to them. You may come from a different place with a different perspective. Stating another perspective may not be a way to connect. Try to understand why the other person is saying what they are saying. Just by finding out that...we may connect and start to come together. A couple of points about dementia. There are resources out there. One handbook that I found is The 36-Hour Day. The 36-Hour Day, sixth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book): Mace, Nancy L., Rabins, Peter V.: 9781421422237: Amazon.com: Books It outlines numerous help resources. Getting a doctor that is knowledgeable about dementia and geriatric care is paramount. Monitoring safety, food, medicine Rx, etc is a given. One person cannot handle the job. Take a break and recharge. My mother=in=law had both depression and dementia. At one point she began hitting my wife, her daughter. Know what to do in that situation. We got my MIL to the emergency room. The whole story goes on and on. Good luck all.
  23. I have a finance degree from IU-B and Civil/Environmental Engineering from UW-Madison. Retired early...at 57. These are my financial tips for retirement: 1. Marry money; and/or at least do not partner with someone who is a shirker; 2. Get a job that pays into retirement or provides a pension; 3. Invest in Roth and IRAs...generally the same amount periodically; 4. Diversify your investments and understand what that really means; 5. Risk for growth early. Become more conservative later or depending on family; 6. Plan for bad times. Save. Budget expenses vs income. Cut your losses. Live within your means; 7. Do diligence on all investments or financial advisors. Make darn sure advisors are licensed and bonded. Check references with an independent source in the financial industry; 8. Know what you are buying and when to sell; 9. Keep rigorous books; 10. Never take advice from a blog or advertisement online without independent verification. I bought my first stocks when I was 12-years old. Broken lots (less than 100). American Airlines; IBM; others... I now own mutual funds and it is managed for a low fee of well under 1% per year. I almost never buy extended warranties. I use insurance for reducing risk of catastrophic financial stuff. Think high deductibles equal lowered costs. I do not have 2 homes. I keep my cars for over a decade. I do travel a decent amount. I do not have time-shares. I walk and kayak and love lakes and warm weather. I do love water sports but do not own a boat. I go fishing some but one has to be smarter than those critters. Been married to my IU sweetheart forever.
  24. You feel old? I saw the Who and later CS+N back in Assembly Hall when it was new. BB King, Jefferson Airplane and the Byrds in the old Stadium next to the Library. Well, I didn't see clearly, that is. And Chicago in the HPER building. And Luther Allison at the Blue Bird. And now I have hearing aids and bifocals. Just saw Santana a year ago. And Went to Abbey Road on the River a year ago. Love blues and lively jazz...and live music outside.
  25. Al Durham left a game December 1 because of twisting his right ankle...believe it was the Texas game. He is not the only one with an ankle that isn't likely 100%. That plus the Minny guards are really quick. Carr is great at creating a shot and getting a step on an opponent. Everyone is walking wounded... The defense sure seemed to work overall though. Kept Minny's score relatively low. Except for those turnovers. Guys didn't quit. Look at the assists and the rebounds...too.
