I don't believe that, but trusting Cupps, Banks, CJ, and Leal was more of an issue for me.

Yeah I think Leal is fine I t he coming year as a 5-10 minute player tops. Cupps I have hope for. He just needs to add like 25-30lbs of muscle to his frame, as he was so slight. The roster this coming year is actually looking strong and can be a contender.

2022-23 was widely considered a Top 10-12 team preseason.

Never saw it. I’m a huge believer that the college game is a guards game. And we haven’t had the guards necessary since Yogi, which means the Crean era. Just one man’s opinion and philosophy on basketball.

X was too inconsistent in his play for my liking to consider IU a top 10-12 team. Also the lack of shooting and true post size. TJD was great but undersized. Saw that vs Arizona for sure.

Fishbowl doesn't require 7 figures and being paid more than doctors.  Bidding wars is the only reason they get paid ridiculous amounts.  If every school decided they would stick with 6 figures, there would be complaining but very few are taking a pay cut to change professions.

Obviously the talent wouldn't be as good but quit pretending no one would play for just a free education.

Supply and demand my friend. There are more doctors than elite basketball players. Not saying it’s right but as someone who works in healthcare I’d rather pay to watch basketball than go see a doctor.  lol.

Which league has 100% free agency, no salary cap, no salary tax and no employment contracts? Also the teams/league don’t make the rules?

The NCAA is just the organization universities created to set the rules. The issue is the universities through the NCAA set rules that have been deemed to be illegal. To solve the issue you need a players union and the athletes to be recognized as labor/employees.  Vermont basketball is attempting to make this happen now. Until there is a union you can’t collectively bargain to have rules. But the universities don’t want to share revenue until that have to so they are dragging their feet and letting the entity they set up be the bad guy punching bag.

But to your point the is no issue imo with NIL and its sustainable. Even if IU has 0 money to spend on NIL there will be players that will come play. IU might finish last in the conference every year but the system is sustainable for however much any school wants to spend. Nobody is forcing schools to pay anything. They are choosing too. Before NIL other programs paid with no limit and won championships  now that’s it’s open to everyone it’s a problem? And to be honest the billionaires footing the NIL bill aren’t even making a dent in what they make a year. This is a rounding error to them. So in that light it is sustainable.  You might not like it but it’s totally sustainable.

No professional league could survive under the current transfer/NIL regime

Really? The English Premiere League seems to be doing very well. European soccer leagues have 2 transfer windows a year. Very similar to a transfer portal. To try and have financial fair play they can spend what their revenue is. But that’s a more recent phenomenon. NFL didn’t have a salary cap until the 90’s. Baseball doesn’t have a salary cap that’s capped. Any team can go over and pay an extra tax. US sports leagues have player unions which colleges players don’t have yet.

Dirty, but I like it.  I hope the NIL system crashes and burns.

I hope it’s here forever. lol.

honestly every IU fan should support NIL bc it’s the vehicle to get back to prominence. Without it there is no hope. The Dukes etc of the world will still be paying for the top players and IU would always be an afterthought.

I'm happy when IU gets their guy.  And, I'll always be a Hoosier fan.  But, man I'll take a team like Indiana State had this year every time over one that was constructed in the mold of George Steinbrenner's Yankees (youngsters can google him).

If a genie were to grant me my college basketball wish, I would put the game back like it was before free agency.

Oh, and you guys can get off my lawn!

Surprised you even have a lawn for ppl to get off of. All the alimony you have to pay with 9 ex wives.

I agree. And maybe a most realistic one.

Michigan fans seem to think he is theirs. I know ppl have said IU was his dream school. But he grew up in a Michigan family and attended games there. Evidently during Wisc-Mich games they would show pictures of Essegian in Michigan gear as a kid. So I’m not getting my hopes up on this one.

I really don't mean to be a buzzkill, so I'll leave it here. But there hasn't been a year in recent memory where the on court results matched the pre-season hype for IU. All I'm saying is that I see no reason to believe next year will be any different. Yes, there was a talent deficiency last year in the backcourt, but the bigger issue is a schematic deficiency that isn't going away.

Again, happy to be proven wrong in time. But I don't think I will be.

Respect your opinion but I’m of the total opposite belief that system is the bigger problem over talent.

Our guards have been dreadful since Cream left. That includes Romeo, bc he played hurt. X was never the answer either. We haven’t had a top PG since Yogi. I think Carlyle is a great fit if his shooting improves. Which freshman to soph jump for a good FT shooter is a very good indication he will be a mid 30’s% from 3 next year. Rice projects even better from deep. Both are tremendous athletes that can finish at the rim AND then also finish the old fashion 3pt play by actually making g their FT’s.

No adjustment to be made for Purdue. Be able to guard Edey 1 on 1...

Dominate Purdue 1-4. We did it twice last year.

Not sure what adjustments Painter could have made. They were severely outmatched athletically at every position but center.  The height and length for UConn was evident just by eyesight on the court. The guy guarding Smith dwarfed him.

Ya confirmed the emoji he posted was about TJD. I hope you know what you are talking about but I’m very hesitant to believe you.

Did he confirm it or was it from the hysterics guy? Bc if it’s just about TJD there is no reason to just have a cryptic emoji. More than likely they are cooking something and Ya tweeted it and is trying to cover himself bc they don’t want anything out too soon.

That means Galloway would play the 3 and Mgbako the 4 and Reneau the 5. Woody hasn’t shown he’s willing to do that very often unless Mgbako’s feedback from NBA is you need to play the 4 which I would be shocked they say that so he is going to want to play the 3. If you have Tucker/galloway at the 2 it means you won’t pursue Conwell which is a horrible mistake and then you must have a high percentage shooter at the point guard position.

I think Woody knows he has to make some changes. And I think the inside out comment it’s getting taken way way way overboard. I’m watching the NCAA games and I’m seeing a ton of inside play. But there are shooters with the post players. Also athleticism in droves in the backcourt. I could definitely see us playing small ball some this year. See how the roster pans out.

Do you really think Woodson will have TG come off the bench? It’s been said Perkins is way better at the 2. IMO Perkins is my backup plan to Conwell. I find out through back channels how interested Conwell is in IU and I throw him a ton of money to sweeten the deal. ISU and SLU can’t offer him what we can IMO. Maybeee SLU but paying Avila and Conwell would be super tough plus trying to build a new team for his style.

Why not? Trey wasn’t a starter until this year. Perkins had about a 4:1 assist to turnover ratio. I don’t want a SG who can’t shoot but I’ll take a PG with a 4:1 assist to turnover all day, one that can defend and get to the rim. When fouled makes FT’s at a good clip.

They were never going to keep Bakich. And they made a helluva hire in Tracy Smith.

I know IU fans love Tracy Smith, Michigan fans are still questioning it to be honest. He was a success at IU but didn’t do well at his next stop. So there is skepticism. Year 1 was a .500 record.

Didn't Beilein retire suddenly late , leaving them scrambling?

Beilein went to the NBA to coach the CAVS. The rumors at the time was Warde didn’t do anything to lock Beilein up and give him the support he was looking for. Same with Bakich the baseball coach who left. It was also rumored that Wardes top coaching choice was Ed Cooley. When it got leaked there was backlash and he pivoted and hired Howard. Howard never adjusted to the admission requirements at Michigan. Had Shannon Jr and Caleb Love but admission credit issues cost him. He targeted talent but not talent that would make sense given the admission circumstances.
