A golf cart was riding around in my yard so i went out to say i didnt mind if they walked around looking for their ball but keep the cart behind the stakes. It was Larry Brown. He was playing with Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun.
Lol.
I have one, albeit second hand. When LB was coaching the Pacers, a co-worker took his kids to a park on the N.E. side of Indy one Sunday. As they were walking , he noticed an attractive blonde lady (i.e. a "MILF"). So, being a major horn-dog he was taking in the view for a few moments until he was interrupted by a man's voice asking " Did you get a good look?". It was LB, and the lady was Mrs. Brown. 😳

I feel this is a quality addition/retention for the staff. Also provides continuity in the recruiting process.

Back in the day the seats across the floor of the bench were all filled and had a lot of places for people in wheel chairs
Yep. Wasn't Chancellor Wells seated there frequently in the 80's?

Interesting article on what some major media types thought of the hire...I thought this was interesting from a journalist from the Atlanta Constitution who'd been there since Woody coached the Hawks...
Atlanta Journal Constitution
Longtime Atlanta Journal Constitution columnist Mark Bradley isn't a big fan of Woodson's, dating back to Woodson's coaching days with the Atlanta Hawks, where he took a horrible roster and got into the playoffs a few years later, but didn't win enough for Bradley's liking."(Woodson) is among the more curious hires of the millennium. He’s 63. He hasn’t coached college basketball. There’s a chance (Woodson) will succeed in the fishbowl job where four others have failed. There’s a better chance he won’t.
Plot twist: Matta, who’s 10 years younger than Woodson, will join the Indiana athletic department as an associate AD for basketball. Such a package deal is, in college circles, unusual if not unprecedented. With Woodson having never recruited, he figures to need all the advice he can get. Still, we’ve seen what Woodson thinks of advice. (Larry) Drew talked his way into becoming the Hawks’ head coach by listing all the swell ideas he’d had that Woodson ignored.''
You mean the same Larry Drew that succeeded Woody and proceeded to win 44, 40, and 44 games after Woody had won 53 in his last year in ATL?
Sounds like Woody was right to ignore those "swell ideas." And it sounds to me like Drew went running to management to undermine his boss when he didn't get his way...
My hot take is that the writer was "pro-Larry Drew", likely because he (Drew) was a former Hawks player. Results be damned.

I heard it on one of the many podcasts I've listened to in the last 3 days....just can't remember which one. It was either Crimson Cast or Assembly Call. Who knows if there is any truth behind it. Maybe it's CAM's personality but it did kinda seem that way.
Yep. I saw it referenced yesterday and thought it might explain some things. I don't know how much of a dream job it was for him - I'm sure he saw it as a great opportunity. However, thete was always a certain lack of excitement/enthusiasm from Archie. I don't remember ever seeing Mrs. Miller at games on TV.
It could have just been his low-key demeanor and/or the contrast to Crean. IDK, but I definitely get a far greater sense of passion for the job from MW.

I hope Woody's first recruiting trip for a high school kid is Gary to see Jalen Washington...
He sounded like he will focus heavily on Indiana recruits, so yes.

Regarding TJD, you’d think Woody may be a good guy to keep him here. Every single player says that he’s direct and he’ll tell you exactly what he thinks. If TJD’s parents factor into his decision, think about Woody and Dale Davis, two old school NBA guys, sitting down at the same table to reminise and talk about getting Trayce ready for the next level. That’s some immediate rapport.
I'll add this: many expect TJD to put his name in for the NBA draft to at least get feedback. Now he has the opportunity to work with one of those very people who would be providing feedback. Not only to get the info, but to get help on making the required improvements.

I think we need guys who know college landscape backward and forward. I think Matta gets his Rolodex out. He will probably get interest as it is. We need tireless recruiters who know how to do it.
Absolutely. As has been said by someone else: making Matta the AADBO (or whatever it is), leaves 3 assistant coach positions available for it.

Last time, Woody tried to pitch Larry Brown to come with him. This time, Matta fills that spot. Presumably we don’t need to pay a guy like Woody much at all or give much of a buyout. So the savings can pay for Matta. Woody had zero leverage so if there’s any kind of substantial buyout after four years, that’s a disaster.
I'd forgotten about the "last time" story. In a sense, I'd rather have Larry Brown - the man can teach the game. BUT, Larry has trouble keeping his hands clean. And he call Beilein "kid". 😄

Yeah I see parallels to Martelli but Martelli can actually coach and recruit which is a big difference obviously.
Another "but" is that Woodson has been a head coach, Howard - not so.

Actually as of right now they don’t. The one time transfer rule hasn’t passed yet. The were supposed to vote in January and they pushed it back again. They are supposed to vote on it at the final four meeting they have every year.
I think most of have been assuming it was already in effect. Typical NCAA....

I don't remember if it was an actually Keady comment or something someone said, imitating him, but "Play Hard!!" always made me laugh. But it was an accurate reflection of his coaching and his teams.

It probably seemed like it because of all the B.S. "experts" on message boards (good news coming, he's about to commit, blah blah blah).

They’ve since hired Kenya though. Does that give you any hope? He’s brought in Stewart thus far.
Hope is just that - hope. I have no feel one way or another on him. Results are needed. Stewart, to the extent that Kenya was involved will hopefully (there's that word again) provide much needed shooting. Mid season transfers are a bit of an unusual circumstance. A lot of teams have their rosters set and may not have an open scholarship available for the season in progress. That may be moot if the kid never gets in a game in these remaining weeks.

Kaufman was a much bigger miss.
Lol. I knew someone would say this, and it may end up being true.
The feeling at the time of the Garcia recruitment was that CAM had done a great job of locking up the state. But I feel that alone will not get us back to being national contenders - we need to bring in top players from all corners. But that has yet to happen.
As for Kauffman, missing was particularly discouraging because he chose our rival over us. I don't know if he's "great" or not, but sometimes I feel in-state players can be overhyped on IU message boards.
-
The Garcia recruiting failure was the most disappointing of the CAM era for me. It was the first time I felt we had gone 100% out for a recruit and lost out. It also confirmed my growing doubts about the ability to successfully recruit highly ranked out of state players (sadly, nothing has removed that doubt for me).

That scheduling could be a huge factor. The incoming administration continues to insist on a lockdown (100 days??). If that comes to pass, or ends up truncating the conference season it could reward the lucky ones and handicap others. COVID outbreaks could do similarly - look how if messed up the football season.
I waited until yesterday to subscribe to a streaming service so I could get ESPN, BTN, etc. I'm taking the "enjoy it while you can" approcah realizing it could all go on hiatus in the blink of an eye.

Not that this has anything to do with anything. Other than this is an NBA thread.... and it seems we have many Pacer ( or as you you refer to them.... "P" fans )... I ask who is you all time fav "P" player ?
For me it has to be :
As a kid I was a Bob Netolicky fan, but from a talent standpoint Roger Brown and Big Mac are hard to beat.

Hard to get too excited about any of it. The attitudes and bickering back and forth with millionaires and billionaires when most Americans are suffering through every day just trying to make a living all the while still working in the midst of all the uncertainty and taking risks for their families to pay the bills just is a turn off. Probably why I love college basketball so much. Mostly still just kids living a dream loving the game. The passion I once saw in the NBA seems to mostly mostly have died out years ago. Heck these guys are mostly so out of touch with the real world. Don’t get me wrong the greats of the past lived a different life then the rest of us but it just seems they weren’t so out of touch and were still amongst the community...now even the bench guys are making so much money they put those that came before to shame. I’ll wait for the amateurism to tip it off to go back. Same for the NFL too.
Pretty much my feelings about pro sports (and amateur to a lesser extent). While we love watching our favorite teams/games, the bottom line is that they are playing a game. A GAME. Remember when RMK used to make fun of reporters saying we all learned to write in grade school but most of us went on to more important things? Same applies to athletes. Grossly overpaid (or lavished with attention and praise) due to their ability to play a game - and half of that ability is genetic roulette. I appreciate their effort and dedication to the game, but much of that effort is for personal gain and improvement which is good, but they aren't Gods or necessarily better people just because of their achievements and abilities. I enjoy watching (some of them), but I stopped viewing them as hero's a number of years ago. I don't know if I even have as much as a passing interest in the NBA anymore, perhaps my only interest is in the careers of ex-IU players. I suspect my feelings about the NFL are soon to be the same.

Don't know about Justin's recruiting comments regarding offers, but love the gratitude this kid exudes. It could be that he has recently blown up, and hasn't gotten used to it, but attitude is such a big factor. Give me a grateful fast riser versus someone that was ranked high early based on athleticism, and hasn't progressed, any day.
Agreed. I think it's interesting how he alludes to beginning to believe that maybe the NBA could be in his future, rather than indicating that that goal is his highest priority and that choosing a college isn't just about finding the coach that can get him there.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m kind of getting Crean flashbacks with our approach to this 2020 class.
I looked over the UI board this morning and I thought I saw where Underwood has extended 55 offers to 2020 players. CAM may not be stingy with offers, but he's not passing them out like candy either.

I honestly thought that up to even a few years ago. But I’ve always thought the Spurs as a small market team was the only that could do it...then after Golden State, Toronto, and the Bucks, etc.and then larger market teams like Atlanta, Chicago and New York struggling to be good or consistently good...well it opened my eyes to the fact that I couldn’t simply say “oh the whole league is the Big Market teams and superstars going to those teams. That isn’t supported by the reality of the past 10 years.
Other negatives about the NBA night still have validity such as watering down talent, skill being replaced by “potential,” etc all seem to have something to them in my opinion.
As I recall San Antonio got it all going in a unique way. They were bad and drafted a star (David Robinson), then a short while later he had a season ending injury and they pulled off a coup by tanking (or were just that bad without him), got lucky and parlayed that into getting Duncan. Bang. Two stars. I can't think of many, if any, times a truly small market team traded for a superstar (let alone two). I do give props to SAS for continuing to be contenders (or nearly so), well after DR and TD were done.
Seinfields line about "rooting for laundry" was about MLB, but IMO applies to the NBA.
But, hey what do I know? The league is profitable for the owners, the players make obscene amounts of money, and there's plenty of people to watch the games and fork over big dollars to attend games. I'm just not one of them.
Transfer Portal......and LeBron James and other off season tangents.

Imagine, if Carmelo texted/called a prospect in support of Woodson. Would Syracuse get hit with sanctions? LOL
Knowing the NCAA, I wouldn't bet against it!
