Kendal22
Arkansas bounced back today to beat Illinois State 5-1. Mississippi State trails Long Beach State 8-3 entering the 4th in Starkville. Over the past 7-8 years, I've become a big Ole Miss baseball fan. They improved to 2-0 today with an 11-1 win over Charleston Southern. I'm taking my first trip to Oxford in April for the Saturday game of the Mississippi State series. Should be an unbelievable atmosphere with 8-10 thousand fans at Swayze Field.
Kendal22
Long Beach takes a series in Starkville winning 13-3 today. Mississippi State will be fine but certainly a tough way to start the season. Building off of a wildly successful 2021, Tennessee is 2-0 with a pair of convincing wins over Georgia Southern. With the loss of expected ace Blade Tidwell, the Vols got welcome news in finding out that Vanderbilt transfer Ethan Smith is eligible to pitch this year. Smith got the win today after an inning of work. The Missouri transfer Halvorsen will also be a big boost for Tennessee once he's healthy. He was the Tigers' Friday night guy last season and opted to transfer to Tennessee rather than signing with the Phillies after being drafted in the 19th round. Conference rival Michigan bounced back from a heartbreaking walkoff loss to Texas Tech to soundly defeat Kansas Sate. These games are part of the annual opening weekend event at Globe Life Field in Texas. D1 baseball has been talking up Iowa's Adam Mazur after a stellar showing on the Cape last summer. Mazur had a nice outing in Iowa's season-opening victory. Big Ten favorite Nebraska dropped the first two games to Sam Houston State. The Bearkats are a very strong program, which just speaks to the depth of the teams in the South and highlights the early-season advantages held by Southern teams. Kendal22
In a preseason top 10 matchup here in Nashville, Oklahoma State evened up the series with Vanderbilt. The Commodores lost one of the best starting pitching duos in college baseball history in Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter. Tim Corbin will find a way to piece his staff together as the season goes along, he always does. Christian Little and Patrick Reilly were expected to be the next starting pitchers in line but neither were in the rotation this weekend. Chris McElvain and Nick Maldonado have started on Friday and Saturday against OSU. Maldonado is making a move similar to MSU's Landon Sims in that he is moving from a closer role to the rotation at least for this opening weekend. IU's Sunday opponent next weekend, Stanford, opened with a 1-0 over Fullerton Friday night before falling 11-0 to the Titans on Saturday. Didn't realize Stanford was ranked 6th in the D1 baseball poll. Ole Miss had 11,600 fans in attendance for an early season game against Charleston Southern. Pretty impressive. Seeking6
Just so I'm posting correctly. This thread is for all other schools college baseball....and the other one is specific to just IU right?
Kendal22
I'll let @btownqbanswer, but general IU baseball discussion should be fine here.

The "weekend" thread I'll open each weekend can be used to discuss THAT specific weekend/news/whatever for that opponent. Lets just get enough traffic that we HAVE to seperate the discussion more!!! Kendal22
Liberty won 2 out of 3 at Florida. Arkansas and Illinois State are tied at 1. Mississippi State leads Long Beach State trying to salvage one game in the series.

The SEC facilities arms race continues. Florida, Kentucky, and Alabama have new parks. Tennessee and Mississippi State recently renovated theirs while Ole Miss and Arkansas announced new renovations coming. Ole Miss just had big renovation a couple years ago also. Always a great atmosphere in their park, which IU got to experience in 2020. Bryant is a really good program, though. Certainly one of the best in the Northeast - tend to make regionals regularly. We beat them! 2020 team was going to be one heckuva fun team to watch. Offensively we were loaded. Dunham and Richardson, I believe, were both hitting above .400 through 15 crazy difficult games. Kendal22
That was a tough IU team. Would have loved to see that one play out. Ole Miss was in Greeneville too that weekend. They finished the shortened season 16-1 and had a great shot at Omaha. What could have been.
Kendal22
Happy Opening Day to all - by Brian Scott Rippee (substack.com) Brian Scott Rippee is a guy that covers Ole Miss baseball. About halfway down this article he explains perfectly what I love so much about College Baseball.

btownqb
This is the big difference from football/basketball to baseball. These smaller schools are legit contenders/power programs. Schools in the American, Sun Belt, and schools like GC... are a lot of times better than B1G teams. That's one of the great things about college baseball. There are so many competitive programs that don't make a dent on the football and basketball landscape. Even Vanderbilt being a national power illustrates this. Schools like Long Beach State, Sam Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette, Dallas Baptist, CS-Fullerton, and too many others to name. College baseball feels like one of the last vestiges of true amateur athletics.

Kendal22
Big Ten favorite Nebraska dropped 3 of 4 at Sam Houston. Looks like a challenging schedule for Nebraska with TCU and Long Beach left on the non-conference schedule.

I watched a ton of AC early on in his career with the Reds. This has the same vibes to it.
