They put a 'restrictor plate' on the program. Its what ran Lou Holtz out of South Bend in the mid nineties. Ever wonder why ND never gets guys like Jerome Bettis, Ricky Watters, Chris Zorich, Bryant Young after Holtz left? The admissions won't let guys like that in any more. They want to keep the program under their thumb Indiana put the 'restrictor plate' on after Knight left. Great analogy, I completely agree! There are only two programs who have had multiple coaches win more than 1 national title. Indiana: McCracken (1940,1953) and Knight (1976, 1981, 1987). North Carolina: Smith (1982, 1993) and Williams (2005, 2009, 2017).

Edit: just saw the "more than 1." My bad... First cup of coffee and all...

Was only listing the coaches that had won multiples....not to slight McGuire's accomplishment or anything.

And, if you have the brainpower to create fake classes, you are most likely playing with the rules elsewhere.
BADGERVOL
ND has a recruiting advantage that was HUGE and will never come again. if you were a Catholic kid in America, and think about how many hardcore families were devout Catholics in the 50s-80s, you went to ND if offered. Both for academic and religious reasons. That is gone.
