It sounds like Indiana did what Notre Dame did to it's football program. They put a 'restrictor plate' on the program. Its what ran Lou Holtz out of South Bend in the mid nineties.

Ever wonder why ND never gets guys like Jerome Bettis, Ricky Watters, Chris Zorich, Bryant Young after Holtz left? The admissions won't let guys like that in any more. They want to keep the program under their thumb

Indiana put the 'restrictor plate' on after Knight left.

Great analogy, I completely agree!

There’s not a lot of programs that successfully moved on from such LEGENDS as RMK & CLH!!!  It’s SAD for me to grow up & LOVE such LEGENDS that NEITHER program has recovered since!!!  Growing up IU hoops & ND football we’re LIFE!!!  87 & 88 seem like CURSES

At least in basketball, only having one "glory period" is pretty common.  There are only two programs who have had multiple coaches win more than 1 national title.  Indiana: McCracken (1940,1953) and Knight (1976, 1981, 1987).  North Carolina: Smith (1982, 1993) and Williams (2005, 2009, 2017).

Frank McGuire also won an NCAA championship for UNC (undefeated) in 1957 (vs Kansas and Wilt Chamberlain).

Edit: just saw the "more than 1." My bad...

First cup of coffee and all...

How many programs have that happening where there were not fake classes?  And, if you have the brainpower to create fake classes, you are most likely playing with the rules elsewhere.  :)
