IU Scott
I still feel for the mid major programs when it comes to the portal. They sign these players and develop them and then they go off to bigger schools.

With the transfer portal allowing freedom to hop teams, Lander would be better off going to a team like Evansville (or a similar conference) and if he has success, just transfer after that. He needs playing time, and he's not going to get a ton of it in a major conference. When does USI go D1?? When I went there it was like Reitz West lol. Honestly, if this board is any indication of the IY fandom at large, there was a lot of waffling between "he will be the greatest pg at IU since IT" to the "he will never play at this level". The extremity of the views on his play probably are sub-optimal. If the kid only had to play at one end of the floor I think he could have certainly broken out….the more he played I think offensively he could have certainly gotten into a grove. It’s the defensive end he was completely lost. If he goes somewhere that just plays a 2-3 zone or can hide his defensive deficiencies then he may certainly break out. Just think he needs a more up and down free flowing league like OVC or Sun Belt. Edited April 5, 2022 by dgambill

No honestly I loved living in Evansville…but exciting it is not. Friendly and just fit like a glove for me. Just the right size. Maybe be nice to go home for him and he could certainly be kind of like the George Washington of that program maybe helping it get off the ground D1 wise.

That said Murray is moving to MVC and it’s a much more tough nosed league. Not as free flowing movement of the OVC. But yeah…expected him to take a step back in competition…not really a step up in the Big East (at least when it comes to guard play).
ButlerHoosier
I'm hoping that if possible we can pick up Johni Broome from Moorehead State. It'd be nice to pick up another big guy.

Ohio State Coach Holtmann was relying on Ahrens to be the Buckeyes’ three-point specialist, but he went 45-of-127 from three-point range (35.4%), which was down from his performance last year when he went 55-of-127 (42.5%)."

Then while there you grow 2 inches and develop into a superstar. You staying in Muncie? Big schools are taking hits with the portal as well. Think of all the time and money spent recruiting, developing/training players and then they end up leaving. You've got schools losing 3 or more players that are scrambling to fill rosters. And it's not all bad for small schools. They stand to pick up some talented 4/5 star kids that just need a fresh start. Go Hoosiers!!!

He wasn't up to his normal standards this year, but I've always thought he was one of the better catch and shoot 3 point specialists in the Big 10. He gets going, he can kill you... And not a shabby defender, either...I think he thought Tanner Holden would be taking minutes from him next year...

My take on this one is that for the Mid major you get a star and he gets poached. You believed in him when the big boys didn't and maybe you reached him and helped him attain his potential. A lot of the guys leaving the big programs are due to lack of PT or some internal issues. I think its much easier for a P5 to replace their roster than the mid majors. It is what we have so all schools have to adjust and make the most of it.

I agree with this, but specifically, I think it’s much easier for the big time P5 to make those replacements. I just mentioned it in the Final Four thread, schools like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UNC, Nova, etc can go out and get the best guys (all conference first team transfers) in the portal based on their reputation, exposure and ability to win right away. I think those big time transfers need to see themselves filling a hole and need a coach who they know can win. It’s still early, but Woody needs to prove himself. That’s why I thought making the tournament last year was so crucial. Nobody good is going to transfer into a dumpster fire or to a school trending in the wrong direction.

If I am a lower mid-major coach I am selling this idea to low 70ish ranked recruits: You can go to UNC/UK/KU/IU and sit for three years or you can come to Ball State and develop. If you are good enough and want to shift to UNC/UK/KU/IU in a couple of years, I will help you find the right situation. That is, make about doing right by the kid.

Having been around a lot of guys ranked from 1 to 300 most think they can play at the highest level or their parents do. Its really hard to convince a guy that gets interest from an IU or PU that he should go a mid major. As a high school coached I hated when guys even got a letter from schools that were above their ability. It just gave a false sense of thats the type of school I should be playing for. As hard as it is for kids to grasp parents are so much worse. Rarely have I talked with a parent that had the correct belief at the level in which their kid should be playing at the next level. Exceptions being guys like Romeo etc...

But, I will say, when he played, I’d focus on his defense. He honestly was a zero covering the drive. The other team could take him off the bounce at will. It’s totally inexcusable and it never got better. There’s no reason why that should ever happen. IMO a massive component of defense is just desire and savvy(positioning, etc) and all out effort. You can’t half ass it. It’s got to be a non-negotiable commitment. In the final analysis, he had no one to blame but himself. This wasn’t a situation where he didn’t fit in at just IU. With that defense, he was unplayable anywhere in the B1G. You just cannot play a guy who can’t stop the ball at all on defense. I would hazard a guess that Woody had a very frank conversation with KL and it was not to coddle him. Hence he left. I wish him well and hope he has a come to Jesus moment about his defense. Initially I thought so but paying special attention on him his on ball was not great but away from the ball he was pretty good at getting into the correct position and forcing his guy off of cuts. I would rate his overall team defense much much better than Race. I found him to be our worst defender among guys that played a lot
