milehiiu
I would like to expand this discussion, by stressing the importance of having a great kicker/punter. Often times the difference between losing and winning a game. Austin Starr's Game Winning FG Against Purdue We've had several great kickers at IU over the years. However, when I think of IU kickers. I think of Pete Stoyanovich. Who, many times would leave the IU soccer field when the game ended to change into an IU FB uniform at Memorial Stadium. Pete was a very successful kicker in the NFL for several seasons. And remarkably is still kicking for a professional team in Macedonia.
milehiiu
Not trying to beat a dead horse here. But can't stress the importance of having a great kicker/punter on your side of the side line. Followup to the Star FG against PU : Indiana vs. Purdue - End Game Highlights I was at that game, what a wild swing between IU leading big and PU coming back. I was stuck in a section with mostly PU fans. They were pretty mouthy before kickoff, and during their comeback. Starr shut then up with that kick. Was the all time favorite broadcast of an IUFB game per "Fisch". Could not think of a more fitting tribute to Jane Hoeppner. Who was on the field after the loss of her husband. Jane has gone through a lot. Not only losing her husband to cancer, but then losing her daughter to an auto accident. Leathernecks
I do appreciate that we put an emphasis on special teams. No idea what Evans is like, but he comes from probably the best academy in the world for producing punters the last few years. Sounds good to me! Jane Hoeppner Talks "Play 13" Anniversary The summer between my sophomore and junior year at IU I interned for the Richmond Roosters in the Frontier league. Oxford, OH isn't far from Richmond, so they always sponsored a night at the ballpark. Coach Hep came and did an interview with our radio guy, Scott Leo. I was incredibly impressed with him, and the next year his name popped up to replace Dinardo and I wa 100% on board. It was certainly an emotional night when that kick went through. Likewise and have for a few years running , but in my lifetime of following closely,. I just don't personally recall feeling either being set up so well to have this current confidence on each delivering on it's respective end of the deal in the same cycle. Sorry for chiming in but Boiler is specifically who I said it to first postgame after the first of Purdue's most recent consecutive wins. In hindsight of that night neither he nor I have bwen entirely right nor wrong about what we thought was building - with the programs we root for LOL Hats off to him for having stood his ground back then as well!. Team, including star player health are likely THE critical factor for each doing more to raise the stakes in the series with what each appear to have in place right now. After responding to the ongoing unusual circumstances that disrupted a normal offseason from taking place ,but everyone else is in that boat . Leathernecks
Here is a really good article about Evans. It is written by someone in New Zealand, so some of their descriptions of American football is a little funny. He says he is a punter and kickoff specialist. He also finished high school last year, so he'll be a couple years older than most freshmen. Somewhat similar to Whitehead. He's enrolling in January, so with the couple extra years and a spring of practice, he should hopefully be ready to replace Whitehead next fall. There are also a couple videos in the article. First time I've seen any videos of him punting. Seems like he really focuses on the technique and not just hitting the biggest punts possible. I'm assuming at the Prokick Academy they get pretty good fundamentals.
