Hate to pick on the kid but Mbako has had some of the worst sequences on defense that I think I’ve ever seen. The most basic things seem completely foreign. Hedging, helping, jumping to the ball……..all of it. 

The lack of pure athleticism on this team is mind boggling. I know some/many will disagree but this team defense is so poor because the lack of athleticism and just dogged determination.  This scheme HAS to have athletic dogs who can recover and switch. You can cover for 1 player with no ability to guard the perimeter but not 3. The only way this team beat even an ok team is to outscore them and that just isn’t going to happen often. 

If I’m Banks and Sparks I’m not happy. I mean maybe try something when 3-4 of the 5 who are playing are having terrible half. 

Reneau has to learn to play hard when he doesn’t have the ball. 

Is Walker hurt?  Not say it would make any difference. Just wondering. 

Walker for Reneau NOW PLEASE!!  He is killing us on defense. 

Didn’t read the whole game thread so my apologies if this has been covered. Just curious if anyone thought that the quality of shots was better because there is so much more movement without the ball sticking with Malik. NOT SAYING IU is in any way better without Malik.  But when he returns could this be a real learning situation to improve the offense?  Malik plus movement could be really something. 

GET A TECHNICAL!!!!!  At some point staff has to show some fight. 

No doubt there is a serious culture issue.  The problem is changing the culture takes time and CMW doesn’t have that time. Not sure this fan base (or any) have the patience for a true culture change. Strong culture used to lead to winning consistently. Very few coaches have the ability to win fast enough and create strong and lasting culture at the same time. 

After tonight Essegian probably can’t wait to transfer to IU. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this?

Just stop the constant switching because IU isn’t smart enough to do it. 4 passes= breakdown and layup or open 3.

Embarrassing. This crap is as concerning to me as the poor play. Unbelievable. 

I agree that we have guard issues but maybe the orientation of the offense has to more to do with the quality of the guards as much as scheme. JHS in the last part of last season thrived. Galloway has shown glimpses and X has even (not remotely this year) been very good at different times. The quality of depth of the guards is completely on the staff but I think portal guards could possibly be given some evidence that guards can do well in this system. 
Again, not saying the system is great or even good but roster construction is the bigger problem IMO. 

1. Reneau becoming a willing passer to open perimeter players.  He doesn’t need to shoot every time he has it in the post.

1A  Reneau becomes full effort player ALL THE TIME.  If he does this I believe he becomes All Big caliber immediately. 

2. Cupps to stop taking long, off balanced 2 point shots. 
3. Galloway to find SOME confidence from the line. More for himself than for the team.

4. A great portal season in which 4 tough, confident shooting guards/wings are added. 

Unwatchable BS. Wouldn’t make a difference in the game outcome but officiating has been the worst I’ve seen. Hummel’s true colors have shown from time to time.

Really important to tread water for a minute and then mount another run!

There was some poor play, and terrible shooting but what disheartens me most is the feeling that the coaching staff wasn’t fighting for the team. I know they care more than I can imagine but show it! I am a supporter of this staff but the horrendous call when we were down 12, GO CRAZY!!  Get the crowd fired up, slow momentum and show the players that the staff (Woodson) will fight like hell for them. 
Most basic coaching at any level is players have to know the coach is right there with them. I am not implying he isn’t but sometimes you have to show it. 

This is just sickening. Officials are TERRIBLE, have to listen to Hummel act like he invented the game, poor perimeter shooting and our better two player rotting. 

PLEASE GET A TECHNICAL!,,,,,

So tired of inflexibility related to foul trouble. Having Mbako and Ware sit the whole half when the game is getting away is near malpractice. 

Haven’t read the thread but for those who say officiating doesn’t matter need to watch this game. The ref whistles and lack of whistles have changed the whole game. 

Assuming even somewhat adequate guard play:
 

I believe that last night’s game shows that the key to changing things is Reneau. He has to affect the game in more ways than just scoring. He is an elite post scorer, at times a good post to post passer and a serviceable three point shooter. 
He does not affect the game enough in ways beyond offense….yet. His rebounding aggression has to double or triple and his close outs must be more urgent. If he does those things he will be a beast and the team’s trajectory changes. 

Most NBA players are elite in at least one area. Does IU have a player who is above average in any area?  
Not shooting

Not rebounding

Not defending

Not effort

Not b-ball IQ

Most of those things should be able to be improved upon but I have no faith that they will be.
