I do think this is a big part of it, too much focus on defense. And a lot of that is because the league isn't getting the top players/athletes. When you are limited in those respects, the path to winning is by slowing things down and playing tough defense. Also as you mention, a lot of these guys have systems that they coach/recruit to because it works to get them 20 wins but tends to fall apart against better teams. And I also think this leads to the "overrating" of the Big Ten because these teams tend to be older and thus ahead of the game in Nov/Dec where they pile up some good wins that jump start the overall conference metrics. But by March the SEC type teams have jelled and the talent wins out. More specifically, the conference doesn't have enough good guards. MSU has the best group and that's a big part of why they made it to the next weekend.

No. In your first example of Memphis/Xavier you picked 2 teams essentially equal in NET/metrics but with a large difference in resumes, i.e. Q1 wins. And they ended up far apart on the seed line (3 and 8). So then you found 2 teams very far apart in the metrics and also with the same (opposite) difference in resumes and guess what? They were very close in seed lines (6 vs 7). Go examine the bracket matrix and you'll see that these 4 teams ended up exactly where 100s of projections predicted they would. Are all those bracket prognosticators also falling victim to this conference bias? Seems unlikely IMO. But based on my experience arguing this topic, I doubt you'll be convinced. Same with the conspiracies about the committee "creating story lines" with seeds. 😄

You saw my post...I think this outcome was expected after the last month or so of terrible play. Next year will be pretty huge for Underwood. Some talk that TSJ will return, but probably some xfers out as well. If there's another season like this one then the seat's going to warm up a bit.
