Tshiebwe did it just a few years ago.  NIL has certainly changed things where players that would’ve easily left to either play in the league or overseas now are coming back because they’ll be paid more.  Pre-NIL, I doubt TJD would’ve stayed for his senior year tbh.  Just the reality of this new world we live in with NIL.

Edey vs. Tshiebwe isn't a very good comparison IMO.   Edey falls into the once in lifetime type of players. His production and dominance of the paint area is something that hasn't been seen in sometime. His numbers speak for itself.    I agree every time any program gets a tweener (NBA vs. college) talent like TJD that stays longer than most it's a real boost.   Edey to me was an exception.   I wonder if he hit the NIL free market what he would had been offered for his covid year?

Staying so long? He was a true senior this year and didn’t redshirt or use the COVID year.  I think it’s clear that Painter will adapt to the type of roster he has. The team that almost made the F4 in 2019 was drastically different than the one this year. He recruits talented players and figures out the rest later.

How many nat. player of year play all 4 years?  How many come back for Sr. year after winning it as a Jr.?  I'd call that hitting jackpot if I was a fan of that team.

    You saw the answer….

Worst loss in NCAA history and MP took the blame and went back to work with his guys.
DGL decomitted so MP got the 300th best portal player to add PG depth

    MP won’t sell his soul…..

My point was Edey.     "Selling his Soul"...   I don't understand anything about that comment.

You make a good point and it is interesting to see the difference in philosophy of our programs going forward.  I personally love how CMP is still building it through the HS ranks and supplementing through the portal with a Lance Jones for example.  I think a guy like Kanon Catchings would’ve been more heavily pursued an Illinois/IU pre-portal days for example. I do wonder how much different the portal will look after the COVID year goes away.

Purdue had an unique situation with Edey staying so long and being so dominant.  I think we'll know more about how Purdue decides to build their program in the next two off seasons.  Any philosophy works when you have a 25 pt and 12 rebs a game guy controlling the paint.

Obviously there will be a drop off this year at Purdue.   How much and how that effects their approach is to be seen.

  6. 8 Step Plan For IU Success:

    1. Pick up phone.

    2. Sign Woodson's buyout.

    3. Pick up phone again.

    4. Get out checkbook

    5. Get out a pen

    6. Ask Chris Beard what it would take to coach IU (Waiting for a hotter looking girl to call him)

    7 Write check

    8. Enjoy years of good basketball and success

Agreed. I mentioned in another thread that while I think every kid on the roster is a good kid, they aren't tough minded, save for Gallo, Walker, and Cupps. Compare the toughness (not talent) of our roster against Wisky's, PU's, Rutgers, KU, Auburn, and on and on, and ours stinks in comparison.

I can't disagree with that, but imo the real issue was guard play/lack of shooting.  It was historically bad and yes Woodson built the roster so it's on him.   Also keep in mind we did start 4 So and Fr. for most of the year.  There are other issues but to me those were the most glaring that equalled so many loses.

As of for everything right now... has there ever been a team that didn't have a single commit?   I can't think of one.

I don’t think that’s accurate. He does want to expand his game to have some ability to play as a 3 in AAU this summer but he’s a P5 4 and I’m pretty sure everyone knows that.

Is there a difference between 2-4 these days?   Who you can defend then sure, but offensively there's little difference.

    I don't think there's a difference between a 2-3.

I think this idea is overblown. We have guys that should be able to hit 3's - just too many of them haven't been doing so.

MM is (was?) a projected lottery pick and his defining skill as a recruit was his shooting.

Cupps was a 44% shooter from 3 his junior year (my 30 seconds of searching couldn't find his senior year numbers) and is famous for competing with LeBron from there.

X shot 38% and 37% his two years with us.

Ware is certainly vastly better from range than most guys his size, and has hit them pretty successfully for us.

    Galloway shot 40% last year.

That's 5 rotation players that should be more than competent shooters (not including Banks who has actually been a competent shooter in reality his whole time here). If Galloway and MM were hitting 40%, we would rank 97th in the country in percentage.

Our roster is built for Galloway and X to be mid-volume, high percentage shooters and MM to be a guy shooting himself into the lottery. If those things were happening, we wouldn't be talking about this.

I agree.  What I don't understand is why does it appear like Galloway, Cupps, Leal, etc. don't even look at the basket most of the time when catching the ball with a defender several feet off?

If we are consistently taking/making 10 fewer threes than the other team every game, that’s a minimum of an automatic ten point deficit. We’d have to make an additional five two-point shots to compensate.

That’s one hell of an unnecessary hole to dig yourself into.

Unfortunately, with the current roster there isn't any other way to view it from his standpoint.  Why is the roster built this way is the question.

I think some NBA team will take a chance on him. Not saying he’s a first rounder but I could see him getting a similar deal like TJD. Just takes the right team and situation like @Common Sensesaid.

I think Edey is an outstanding college player.  I think he takes Purdue to a final 4 or better this year.  However, I watch a lot of NBA basketball.   He has no chance in the NBA.   Too many high pick and rolls and way too much up and down the floor.   It's an entire different world.

MgBako is overrated and it’s not even close.

That's fair if you're basing it on his HS/AAU rankings.  I see an 18 year old who that isn't very athletic, but has size and skills to be a really good player at IU in a year or two.  He's played in 4 college games.  Give him a chance.

  13. Indiana is a really young team.  At any given time they have 3 and sometimes 4 players on the floor that are under the age of 20.  The lack of anyone having any confidence shooting the ball is an obvious concern and has been for the last 6-7 seasons outside of Kopp.     However, there is obvious talent.  I don't see any of them leaving early at this point.  Personally, I think Ware will be around for a while.  Let it grow into something.

i don't bet, but man!  the line is 7.5!?  good Lord i'd take UConn.

I do bet.   +7.5 seems too good to be true.  In my experiences if the line seems too good it usually means Vegas knows something we don't.

I like Mgbako’s talent and he showed some really good physical ability last night.  However, he’s incredibly casual out there.  He won’t even get in a stance on defense.

Doesn’t look like he was coached well in high school and he needs a massive adjustment in terms of mindset.   No more fake hustle.  “Im determined to stop my man and I’m in a stance and going all out.”  Unless he does that, he’s going to squander a lot of potential with basketball and money.   He will never be able to say he didn’t get a chance.

One three that he gave up in the last 10 min.  He started a very casual trot back in transition and then  realized his man was sprinting to the three point line and by then it's too late with real shooters.  He's going to learn this isn't HS or AAU ball... I hope.
