Mental Health

Recommended Posts

Recently, DJ Carton of Ohio State decided to take some time off due to his mental health. This seems to be happening more in all sports at all levels. I’m just curious as to what’s transpired over the past few decades, where this clearly didn’t get the exposure then that it’s getting today.

Is it due to the fact that these kids are getting ripped more via social media? Perhaps kids today are getting bad advice from parents, coaches, friends etc.? Or maybe we just aren’t as disciplined today.

I’m just curious as to what you all think about it all. I didn’t look to see if anyone had already posted a similar thread, but thought it was certainly worthy of conversation.

BTW, I’m going to have issues if I keep watching this Indiana team play as poorly as they have recently.

Not to make this just about men, but I think there's been a stigma that you're soft or weak if you're a man and admit to struggling with mental health problems. In a way, it's actually good that DJ is stepping away to get help, because it gives other people in his situation someone they can relate to. Here's hoping he gets the help he needs, and that emboldens others to do the same.

I think a big part of it is that it is much more acceptable to come out with these issues now.  There are a lot of Vietnam veterans who are finally starting to deal with their issues after 40+ years of trying to hide it.  It is a lot more socially acceptable to come out and say you have mental health issues than it was even 10 years ago.

As some people have started talking about, if a guy has something wrong with their knee, they go to a knee specialist.  If a guy has something with their mind, they do nothing about it.  That is starting to change which is why I think we hear much more about this now across all of society, not just in sports.
