Annoying Aging and Health Issues

Recommended Posts

OK so posting this thread to laugh at annoying health issues and aging.

I'm older, but not old, lol. Early 50's. Have always been active/athletic, now dealing with an annoying injury, aggravated by annoying doc.

Early summer 'tweaked' my right ankle playing pick up basketball. Got worse, can't run, play ball, hurts even walking. Tried a boot I had lying around the house, no help (sorry Crean).

After months of Covid delay, finally got an appointment with a sports orthopedic (doc for Houston Dynamo, had treated my son's soccer-knee injuries). X-rays showed arthritis, from a decades' old injury, leaving little cartilege/room for the bones. Doc says sorry, you're old now, you have arthritis in the ankle.

Told the doc thanks, but that's not it. It has to be tendon or ligament damage, I can't even raise up on my toes, no strength, real pain in the front of the ankle, it's not compression pain like bones hitting.

Had to convince him to let me have an MRI. And what does the MRI show -- three ruptured tendons. Torn, damaged tendons.

Meet again with the ankle guy and what does he say -- so, did you see the arthritis in the ankle in the MRI?

I'm like, uh, yeah, did you see the three torn tendons?

He answers, yes, but did you see the arthritis?

I'm like, what? is this about you're wanting to be right?? What about the torn tendons??

He says, well, since your ankle is arthritic, I'd say do nothing.

I'm like, seriously? What about rehabbing the ankle?

He says, oh, well, I guess we could do that. You think? Lol, getting older is a bitch -- and so is dealing with docs.

I wish I could tell you it gets better with age, but I think we all know it doesn't...

I get to undergo this little procedure (cervical disc replacement...two of them between C5-C6 which is ruptured and C6-C7 which is bulging) later this month...

Ugh. My wife had to have back surgery years ago to deal with a ruptured disk, no fun at all but for her it was effective. Hope yours go well.

Perks of being married to a PT she sends me to the good doctors. That said I thought I had a torn meniscus...in both knees....turns out I have arthritis. I hate my knees...they've been bugging me for 15 years. First, I stopped playing basketball. Then I had to stop running/doing triathlons. Now they start bugging me if I golf too much. WTH? I've been working on strengthening all the muscles around them but I've come to the sobering conclusion that I'm not going to make them any better....I'm just going to delay them from getting worse.

I wonder how many admissions of erectile dysfunction will be posted.  :coffee:

I don't know, but I did hear a good joke on the subject the other day...and being we have a few lawyers on the board, I'll sincerely apologize in advance...

What happens when you give a lawyer Viagra?

He gets taller 😉

I never gave PT much credit until I had a knee issue a few years back...outside of my left knee was killing me...I was in one of my gym rat modes, but it hurt so bad, I went to the Doctor...assigned me PT, and the guy said there's a tendon that runs from the hip to the outside upper knee that was rubbing against a bone...he kneaded my thigh like bread dough, and voila! No more pain...

52 here and a couple of years ago I had a very similar nagging issue on my right ankle where it attached in front to my shin. Super painful, but I couldn’t really stop walking. At that point, we were still going into the office. So LOTS of walking to and from the sub every day and up stairs. I got to the point where I was dragging my foot. I finally went in and it was a similar thing - stay off your foot.

So, I got crutches and every day did the 10 minute walk to the sub. Then up and down the subway stairs. Then another 10 minute walk from the sub to my office in Manhattan - on crutches. At the end of the day, it was the reverse. Crutches to the sub, then crutches back home in Brooklyn.

I was signed up for the NYC Marathon that year and really worried that I wouldn’t be able to run it. I used the crutches for like six weeks and didn’t run or train at all.

About a week before the marathon, my ankle was finally feeling better. I was able to stop using the crutches and walk normally.

The day before the marathon I said f#*k it and decided I was going to run the marathon. I did fine until about mile 8. By mile 13, I didn’t think I could make it. By mile 18, I was still going b/c I’m stubborn, but I was having to take a couple of walking breaks. I was running the marathon with my wife and felt bad for holding her up, so told her to go ahead without me at mile 21.

By mile 24 as I entered Central Park, I just said f*$k it again and took off running towards the finish. I couldn’t really feel my ankle or foot anymore anyway.

Finished in like 4:30 and had to go back on crutches for another four weeks.

Ended up being a torn lamination/stretched tendon issue.

Now when I see someone limping I always feel very bad for them.

My hips are starting to bug me a bit while sleeping. I am more concerned about my brain though. My head got knocked around a bit growing up.

The worst was a dirtbike accident in high school.  All I remember was a truck pulling out in front of me and then waking up in a ditch.  I never went to the Hospital for it. I broke my arm the year before and wasnt going to scred up another football season so I refused to go. Could barely walk for a couple weeks after.

You sound like me as a kid. At 16 I went through the windshield of my friends station wagon, doing 50 on the roads around Lake Monroe, as he lost control and went straight into an oak tree in someone's front yard. Both of us went through the windshield. If we'd been wearing seat belts we'd be dead, as the station wagon completely folded in on itself. I woke up in an ambulance on the way to the hospital, ended up with stitches in my scalp but no other injuries (besides the concussion). My friend broke his arm going over the steering wheel -- he told me how the owner of the house was sitting on his porch as we rolled up his lawn....

Also got hit by an IU campus bus when riding my bike as a teenager, broke my ribs. I taped them up myself so I didn't have to miss any hockey. My mom noticed me taping myself up one day....

How about tinnitus ? Anyone suffer from that? I know it’s from super loud concerts as a teenager and fronting a very loud and not very good metal band in my junior/senior years of high school.

It’s really annoying when I try to fall asleep and can lead to a bit of irritability, but I’m already pretty irritable in daily life.

Thats some wild stuff.

I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade and me and a cousin were taking turns pitching and hitting. He was a high school pitcher at the time. I accidentally beaned him in the ribs.  He got mad about it and drilled me under the left eye with a fastball, I wasnt wearing a helmet either.

Yeah, have had that for a few years now. I think mine is from working on a farm with all the loud, day long noises that tractors made back in the 60's. VERY annoying!

Catcher and lineman asa kid. Ran on pavement 4-5 days a week as an adult. 2 knee surgeries later, including a micro fracture. I go in for a cortisone shot each year before curling season begins. Doc takes an x-ray every year and shows me that there’s literally no space between bone on bone. Can’t believe that I am not in pain, and said that I will tell him, not him telling me, when it’s time for a replacement.

Doing as much low impact as time allows. Mostly biking and x-country skiing when there’s snow. Putting off the replacement as long as possible.

More pain from IU athletics these days, tho’ hope that’s temporary

At 33, I feel as though I'm not qualified to participate in this thread. Unfortunately, my body disagrees with that!

I had a pain radiating up the back of my thigh and my "cheek" for a while. It was excruciating. I could barely walk, I could barely sit. By far the worst injury I've ever had. Thought it might be my sciatic, but I didn't have a lot of the other symptoms. Finally went to a couple doctors, and I could tell they were both confused. Neither believed me that it wasn't my sciatic.  They wanted me to do physical therapy. Didn't go, but look up exercises to do, and they made it way worse.

I was able to self diagnose it as high hamstring tendinopathy (hamstring tendinitis), but there was a ton of conflicting information on how to fix it. Finally found on some forum that someone's doctor said it was poor posture. Basically my hips tilt forward and my back sweeps forward and then up which makes the tendons in my hamstring have to travel further and puts stress on them. Did some strengthening exercises and was able to finally get over it. Dealt with it for close to 2 years.

For people with knee problems considering knee replacement, I highly recommend getting a minimally invasive surgery. Both of my parents and my grandma all had it done. In and out the same day for a full knee replacement. Back to better than normal in a few weeks.

My dad had his done probably 7 or 8 years ago and still did construction for another 5 or 6 years afterwards. Up and down, kneeling a lot, and never had any issues. None of them have had any problems since they got them replaced.  All 3 of them say they wish they had it done sooner.
