I'm going to continue my rant for a little longer. A fan can't claim 'Armaan is dead to me' because he chose to play for a coach and not the University, while at the same time hope that the 12th or 13th players on the bench get nudged out to make room for a shiny new toy. That's hypocrisy at it's greatest if those two players at the end of the bench want to wear candy stripes regardless of who the coach is. Keion Brooks had his chance to commit to Indiana (not a coach) 3 years ago, While he chose to do something else, other kids made that commitment to IU. If they were all about Archie, then they would have already left like Armaan did. But, they didn't. Whoever it is has chosen to stay here up until this point and time even with the coaching change. So, don't trash Armaan while, at the same time, hoping one of these other guys is asked to leave. That isn't right on any level. If the player takes inventory and decides playing time is more important than wearing the candy stripes, so be it. I wish him well. But, if the candy stripes and what they represent are more important to that player, he deserves to keep his spot on the roster. I don't care if Lebron decided he wanted to be a Hoosier. That chance was out there for several weeks until Kopp committed.9 points

Not sure that's what he meant. I can't speak for Rico directly, but my position is that if you have 13 schollies availble, and all 13 are in use, you should not actively be pursuing someone else to fill a spot that isn't there unless you are 100% certain someone is planning on leaving. For example, if Brooks told the IU staff today that he wanted to be a Hoosier next year, our staff should not be looking at the end of the bench to determine how to make that happen. If the staff does not already know a player is planning on leaving, then the message to Brooks should be 'if something opens up'. The opportunity for Brooks, or anyone else to be a Hoosier existed until Miller Kopp claimed that last schollie. The early bird gets the worm so to speak, and should not have to give up that worm just because we like another bird a little better.6 points

This is where this whole process becomes uncomfortable to me. I realize that as we add players and someone's projected playing time changes, it could cause a player to rethink his situation. You simply can't play 13 people extended minutes. But, I hope that if any of the remaining players do leave, it's for a better opportunity. I hope they aren't leaving because they don't feel wanted any longer.6 points

While I'm not sure why there are pages of debate and hand-wringing over something that hasn't happened and probably won't happen, I tend to agree with your take. I think a contributing factor to Archie's recruiting problems was that he held scholarships open indefinitely for guys like Brooks and Kaufman and let both of them him-haw around until we couldn't get anybody else. and then, of course, they went somewhere else. Fife hinted at this in his media availability, but if kids want to play basketball for this prestigious program, they need to make a decision about their scholarship offer while it is available. If not, then we move on, get somebody else, and win without them. So until somebody voluntarily leaves, which certainly may happen, my opinion is the roster is full and the kids who passed on their offers are out of luck.4 points

You mean to tell me that the majority of people who post on a forum for a college basketball team tend to prefer college basketball to the NBA? I'm shocked. Shocked, I say. That's a sampling error and doesn't correctly show the opinions of the population as a whole. Scott, we get it that you love IU and nothing else. You also don't care what other people like. We get it. You say it over and over. "I would also say take out all of the NBA cities which is 30 and are the largest cities I would say that college basketball would rank higher." lol, what? That is a ridiculous argument. It's like saying, "If you don't count anyone from Indiana or anyone who attended IU you'll see IU isn't very popular." The NBA is very popular. More popular than the NCAA. It's just the fact of the matter. That doesn't mean NCAA basketball isn't popular, it obviously is. Just not as popular as the NBA. It's funny, you yourself often complain on these boards about how ugly college basketball can be at times and then act surprised and offended when someone suggests it's not the most popular thing in the world. That last sentence.... wow.4 points

I appreciate that the first quota response mentioned ND, Butler, and ISU but nothing about Purdue.4 points

see, it's weird because i'm sure you're not making it up, but i do know a lot of people like we all do, and i'm really hard pressed to name someone who is into the NBA.4 points

So is a team supposed to just recruit players who are only the same or worse than the ones they already have?4 points

There are so many head scratching assumptions here. Wow. A (billion dollar) league that nobody cares about? An NBA championship (the pinnacle of basketball) is meaningless? His NBA players donโt care about him? (Weโve seen enough clips this week about how much Woodyโs players cared for him). BS hates IU? Brad Stevens owes you, I or this university absolutely nothing. IMO, the belief that he does owe us is the very definition of entitlement drenched in the juice of sour grapes. He considered it. Said no. And we got our man. Letโs move on.4 points

I also played college basketball so I love that game too. Why not just stay out of the conversation then? For someone that doesn't care, you've been pretty outspoken and immersed in the discussion. We're having a conversation about national and global appeal of the games, and you chime in that your singular viewing preference is all that matters to you. So why even join the conversation? Just ignore it.3 points

Scott, I love you man. Really. But he is NOT arguing which is better. He is saying the NBA game appeals to a wider audience. I think you are debating two different things.3 points

While I think the NBA is a terrible product anymore, it will always be more popular. Superstars bring in ratings and money so that will always put them at the top. College basketball is more regional so it will be more popular in certain areas.3 points
-
My final thought is who cares if the NBA is more popular or have larger viewerships because it had nothing to do with IU basketball. Why did this even start being a debate on a thread about IU coach Mike Woodson thread.3 points

This seems like a perfectly logical request, given the facts presented. But, me and all my friends can't stand multiple exclamation points. So... nah3 points

Not to be rude but who the hell cares what people in Luthiana watches. I would guess people that lives in larger cities where they have NBA teams are why the ratings are higher3 points

To piggyback off your post, people need to step outside of their bubble in this discussion. It's not about your immediate circle of 5 friends or the couple neighbors you have a beer with after mowing the lawn. The NBA is vastly more popular than college basketball. Millions of people watch the NCAA Tournament, but hardly anyone watches regular season college basketball. It barely registers in the TV ratings. The general sports fan, or even the general basketball fan, doesn't know who the players in college basketball are. Most general fans will recognize very few names if they were to watch the NBA Draft. Nobody in Lithuania cares about the Gavitt Games or any college basketball. The NBA is massive on a global scale. People all over the world know who the NBA players are. NBA players get mobbed when they go abroad. Do you think anyone in a foreign country would even know who Trayce Jackson Davis is? The Final Four does do similar TV numbers to the NBA Finals, but again the regular college basketball season barely registers. Even popular, well-known sports reporters acknowledge that they don't watch college basketball until late February.3 points

Ok folks. Been fun, but I think it's time to get this thread back on topic. Especially with rumors our roster is still not set.3 points

Agree. I actually think lack of athleticism has been a much larger issue the last 4 years than having too many athletes. Who are all of these ultra-athletes that IU has had? Phinisee isn't that athletic, Galloway isn't, Leal isn't, Hunter isn't, Race isn't, Durham isn't, etc., etc. IU hasn't had a super athletic wing since maybe Troy Williams. I'm not sure where this narrative I've seen posted a lot recently came from that IU needs "basketball players not athletes"? We haven't been a very athletic team in about 5 years when we had Bryant and OG.3 points

More people care about the NBA than college basketball, and it's not really even close. The main stream sports fan does not care about college basketball. Even the majority of sports media openly admits that they don't even watch college basketball until the tournament. Brad Stevens is at the pinnacle of his profession coaching one of the most iconic sports brands in the world. I love IU basketball, and even as a Celtics fan and former employee I was hoping Stevens would come to IU, but with that said Brad Stevens doesn't owe IU or IU fans anything. He made the decision that was best for him, and frankly the decision that 99% of the coaches in his position would have also made.3 points

I'll help. He wants to coach in the NBA. To turn down that money means he's pretty serious about his intentions. I don't think you can knock someone else choosing what they think is right for themselves. Clearly the money wasn't the motivating factor. The challenge of winning in the League is.3 points

Well, burgers are great but I had an amazing piece of lightly blackened snapper tonight and would have fish every day if I could. 5 Guys is good but old school would be a Big Boy if they exist where you live. Highly underrated. And for Boiler, who must not get out much, โPenguin Point is a people pleasing place.โ3 points

I hear what you're saying, but the numbers bear it out. The NBA is immensely more popular than college basketball, and it's not really even close. That wasn't really the point in particular to Stevens, I was just addressing BornHoosier's statement that if Stevens won a NBA title that nobody would care about it. Way more people care about the NBA than college basketball...like in the tens millions of people.2 points

I keep track on my phone/twitter. Have yet to sit down and watch any games yet. I'm still not in fan mode for them. Buddy called last night with 4 freebies to Cubs/Nationals on the 17th and I said find a charity and let them go. Haha.2 points

Totally agree! Imagine some of the athletes who can play basketball would do? We are seeing it a Baylor, Michigan, etc. Just naming two. Cause havoc on D and be lightning on O.2 points

Here what you are saying, but I would make the argument that IU has not gotten the most athletic kids. Trayce is the exception. Even Romeo was dubbed as a can't miss prospect, but not an elite athlete. Coach Miller went after athletes, many didn't come, probably because of style, etc.2 points

Woody is one smart cookie... Just happens to go to a Knicks game... Just happens to go out on the floor and meet players who love him... Just happens there's someone nearby with a video recording device... Just happens that the video makes it to twitter... Think that won't impress a few 17-18 year old kids? So as we were pulling out of the driveway yesterday, this guy was standing in the street... So we put him in one of our paddocks until we could locate the owner. Been to every house in our neighborhood, and haven't found them yet. I did put him in the barn with the other 2 last night because it was 58 and raining. When you introduce a new horse, everybody gets geared up. This guy is very young, hasn't been on a lead rope much (although he did have a halter on) and when I offered him a carrot this morning, he looked at me like"WTF is that"?2 points
