Man I want to lock up our instate talent next year…take those kids and then add the best the portal has to offer from year to year and I think you can win a championship around teams like that. Indiana kids that will stay home and won’t transfer and establish a culture and add some portal magic to put us over the top.

Seems kind of quiet for such a post!?

Think we are a little gun shy because we heard a few other names as “locked” already and understandably they weren’t. With him you have to think a back up 5 will probably wrap things up….we would have 10 deep with a 6th year senior, a kid coming off major injuries, and likely yet another unused scholarship as the final 3. Perhaps you find a kid just willing to come for the check and be break glass if emergency 4/5 as well.

You have to actually win something first. There are a lot of pro franchises who’ve spent a ton of money in free agency and have nothing to show for it. This is uncharted waters for CBB. I’m glad that IU seems to be finally focused on getting in the game, but there’s no such thing as a “hot stove” championship.

Even more likely it ends up with nothing to show. Lots of good teams go 1 and done in NCAA tournament…who knows. I just want to watch enjoyable basketball again.

Indeed. It’s short sighted money grab. Kids will have no legacy anymore…any connections to an Alma mater etc will be gone because you sold out your schools. Something to be said for staying 4 years and building a lasting legacy and connection to the school that you will carry the rest of your life.

If he was worth a shit he would still be at purdue, right. I know, I know he was Painted over.

I’d actually say he is worth something which is why he will cash in to go somewhere else. If he was not worth anything than he would just stay where he is. He had options. People may not like him…I get that but he can play a good role…and actually fits better at Duke than he did at Purdue (and he was fine there).

Duke reaching. Just filled their 13th scholly

I actually think it’s a smart fit. Catch and shoot stretch 4. Doesn’t need the ball in his hands like the young guns. Will be surrounrded by playmakers and he can just spot up, rebound, and play defense. He will be an enforcer type in the ACC finesse conference.

First career playoff game.  Let's chalk it up to nerves and give the kid a mulligan.

Hope so…he needs to come out with a different mindset if we want any shot in this series. Only takes a bad series to really start to get into someone’s head. Beverly was owning him last night.

If Rice or Carlyle have the ability to create their own shots, it's a step in the right direction. IU has missed that as an option. Trey was the closest thing they had with his drive and floater. Then consider if Rice or Carlyle can also create open shots for others, it's even better.

The bonus is allowing Trey to move to his more natural position could  pay big dividends. When JHS  was the primary ball handler it allowed Trey to spot up for open looks. He had his best season offensively. It also allows him to get back to being disruptive on D. I believe he expended a lot of energy trying to be a point guard, which he is not.

Today they are much closer. Still need a shooter. Still need one more legit big. Must have insurance options who can step in for injuries.

I think we have enough guards if Newton is healthy. I think a stretch 4 that can shoot and play 10-12 mins would be the goal….shooting doesn’t have to be in the shape of a guard when there is so little minutes there.  A true back up 5 that can give you energy off the bench would be the other.  Not sure there are guard minutes there unless Newton redshirts again. Maybe there is a grad transfer with Indiana ties that would like to round out the team.

Purdue & IU coaches thought they would have Ivey & JHS at least another year maybe two

Did MM go through draft process to get feedback?   Actually like it when guys do this….better than listening to “handlers” or coaches .  Plus as a competitor why not see where you stack up?

The other thing about a 5* is they can have empty stats…or not add winning to a team if they are out there to just get drafted and not about the team. We’ve had a couple at IU…lord knows Ivey was that at Purdue.

In the last 3 years there have been 9 five star players enter the Big Ten…..IU has 5 of them

With little to show for it. Imo if you have a talented freshman it’s getting that second year out of them imo that’s key. Like imagine last year with JHS running the point with pick n roll with Ware.  Imagine Romeo a couple years ago coming back and playing with Trayce. Its stacking classes that makes the difference. So hopefully Mgbako has a huge year.

Also…not all 5* are created equal…from position to position and also from year to year some classes and guys are more difference makers.

They have to win the next game. Also loving forward we still need a starting 2 and 3. I just don't think Neimhard should be a starting 2 on a playoff team

We miss Mathurin…the hope is he turns into that two….but yes we are still an elite player away. Wearing teams down during the regular season with our deep bench is one thing…but in the playoffs the bench shrinks and you can’t win that way.

    Rice and Galloway

Galloway was a senior last year and still didn’t show me any leadership. Not sure if that will be the case this year. He could though….especially if he sacrifices and is willing to take on a stopper role and a spark plug guy off the bench.

Its hard to be a leader when you are the new guy but yes…hopefully someone emerges.

I would like to see how all these new players play as team first before we start clamoring for deep tournament runs.  This is only one part of the puzzle.  Next is building a culture and getting the team to buyin.  As we have seen from Kentucky recruiting doesn’t dictate success, the coaches job is not over by any means and my confidence is probably less than 50/50 until I see otherwise.  As I always say, first 5-10 games are where we will really see what potential there is.

It has to be asked…who is the leader? Galloway might not be starting and Reneau doesn’t seem to have the temperament. We saw it a lot this year with X out. When Trayce and Race left….we lost a ton of leadership.

Thats a big part of how teams come together. A lot of new players.

Alabama goes to a FF. loses 3 starters and a bench guy to the portal? Whats going on there?

All getting poached…every coach and head NIL guy for each school was sitting and watching Alabama play at the end of the year and are throwing money at the kids.

  15. I think what I’m getting at is you don’t need a whole team that shoots like that. A few adequate shooters yes but even if you have one great shooter that draws attention of the defense and if you run them off screens for looks and the defense is jumping out on them that opens up back cuts and space for others.

Having guys like Carlye and Rice that can attack the basket, make mid range jump shots and make 3s at a 32-34% range will put pressure on the D. More so than a 40% shooter. Galloway added with those guys gives you 3 guys to attack off the bounce. Galloway proved to be a OK spot up shooter his Junior season. If he can get back to 32-34% range and MM shoots in the 35-37% as a volume shooter we will be in good shape. Scoring won’t be the problem. Rice and Carlye will be tougher to guard than a guy like Loyer or Essigan.

Yes but just having one guy like Loyer or a prolific 3pt shooter will draw defense attention as well…kinda like Steph does and defense will over help on him or he pulls attention his way and that opens up lanes and shots for everyone else. I don’t think we need multiple but it would be great to have one deadly 40% shooter that teams have to account for. The other guards/wings can be those 34-36% guys.
