I would like to see how all these new players play as team first before we start clamoring for deep tournament runs.  This is only one part of the puzzle.  Next is building a culture and getting the team to buyin.  As we have seen from Kentucky recruiting doesn’t dictate success, the coaches job is not over by any means and my confidence is probably less than 50/50 until I see otherwise.  As I always say, first 5-10 games are where we will really see what potential there is.

It has to be asked…who is the leader? Galloway might not be starting and Reneau doesn’t seem to have the temperament. We saw it a lot this year with X out. When Trayce and Race left….we lost a ton of leadership.

Thats a big part of how teams come together. A lot of new players.

Alabama goes to a FF. loses 3 starters and a bench guy to the portal? Whats going on there?

All getting poached…every coach and head NIL guy for each school was sitting and watching Alabama play at the end of the year and are throwing money at the kids.

  3. I think what I’m getting at is you don’t need a whole team that shoots like that. A few adequate shooters yes but even if you have one great shooter that draws attention of the defense and if you run them off screens for looks and the defense is jumping out on them that opens up back cuts and space for others.

Having guys like Carlye and Rice that can attack the basket, make mid range jump shots and make 3s at a 32-34% range will put pressure on the D. More so than a 40% shooter. Galloway added with those guys gives you 3 guys to attack off the bounce. Galloway proved to be a OK spot up shooter his Junior season. If he can get back to 32-34% range and MM shoots in the 35-37% as a volume shooter we will be in good shape. Scoring won’t be the problem. Rice and Carlye will be tougher to guard than a guy like Loyer or Essigan.

Yes but just having one guy like Loyer or a prolific 3pt shooter will draw defense attention as well…kinda like Steph does and defense will over help on him or he pulls attention his way and that opens up lanes and shots for everyone else. I don’t think we need multiple but it would be great to have one deadly 40% shooter that teams have to account for. The other guards/wings can be those 34-36% guys.

There are tons of mins to be had. We didnt go to the final four. not trying to sound snippy like it reads. 😃

If we land Carlyle I don’t see many minutes left after adding Rice. You need minutes for the incoming freshman Tucker, Galloway and Mgbako who both played major minutes, and Cupps won’t sit back and give his away. Probably looking at one more guard that would play 8-10 a game likely.

💯 He’s a big dude with long arms

    Guarded Zach pretty well

Not a great post up guy, shot blocker  or passer but will grab boards and defend…rim run

Forgot he redshirted at Gonzaga his first year….6th year player!  Man Strength

Is he the best big man in the Big Ten?

    Maryland big coming back?
Queen will struggle with his physicality

You probably still need a 10-15 minute center to back him up….

    Great get 👍👍

Prefer either a stretch 4 or athletic 5…don’t need another bruiser or post up big. Just an energy guy or someone who can play at the 4 but step outside and knock down a shot.

Purdue would have been awful without Edey and Smith

They would not had been a final four team without Jones though. He was a big part of their team this year and was big in hiding the other two guards defensively and really spaced the floor well for them with his shooting.  It is what it is and I liked it better the old way…recruiting and watching a kid grow 4 years and enjoying watching them take those steps but the NCAA gave us this crap.

The efficiency rankings aren’t just raw rankings.  Defensive efficiency metrics are adjusted for the strength and efficiency of offenses you face.

I think we’ve all seen how conferences can manipulate the analytics with their scheduling. I’ll leave it at that because I think Rice is a huge upgrade over XJ…this is a good first step.

We won the B10 in 2016. If that’s a “very long time”, we have vastly different definitions of that phrase.

That was 3 coaches ago….but yeah…that’s a long time….and we’ve had only one top 5 finish since then. For the kids we are recruiting they were like 10 years old.

In general it’s been 8 years since a B1G title. Never won a B1G tourney and over 20years since a title game and over 30 since a championship. For a school that’s suppose to be known for its bball that’s not pretty.

WSU’s defense would’ve ranked 5th in the big ten. I don’t really care what the PAC 12 as a whole looks like, with Rice we’re getting a guy who played on a tourney team that had a solid defense. Fwiw, IU’s defense (and offense) would’ve been in the bottom half of the pac 12.

I’m not trying to say analytics don’t matter but when you aren’t playing a similar schedule or opponents…well it’s not apples to apples. We played a much superior schedule. It ranked 29th vs 77th for Washington St. anyway my point is he will need to step up to both the offensive and defensive side of the ball coming to the B1G. I’m sure he can do it…but we all know the style of basketball from West coast to B1G is night and day.

Washington State ranked 26th in defensive efficiency last year while IU ranked 84th. Playing some PAC 12 level defense would be a huge improvement over whatever we were doing last year.

They had 4 teams in the tournament. One made it in the play in…and one made it with an automatic bid who had no business in the tournament. As bad as the B1G was last year the PAC12 is just a bad conference and playing in a league like that will warp your numbers. Some things you can use the eye test and see…the PAC12 and defense doesn’t go hand in hand.

I prefer to live life with tongue in cheek.  Life has thrown a lot worse things at me than the lack of RECENT success of my favorite college basketball team.  I'm not going to let that stop me from having a little fun at the expense of my rival, one who is a favorite of many of my family and friends

That’s good. I have a 5 year old little girl so I clearly have much much more important things so I hear you. I just think it’s more fun when you can congratulate your friends and family and their success doesnt bother you because you are having just as much success as them. Hopefully soon we both can celebrate because we both are winning championships. Rivalries are best when both teams win imo. Until then…have fun with your family and friends…life is too short not to smile and enjoy it! Sounds like you’ve figured that out.

In one of his pressers, he named four new backs as doing well and then referred to being impressed by the “new guys.”  Also said he was pleased with the group.  Impressive statement because he’s demanding and prickly in a great way.

Also said McCulley needs to pick it up.

Aren’t they all new guys? I mean he has only coached a couple that came over with him.

To be fair, it's hard to take out 7 games, that's a handful.  Lol

With that said, I am not at all concerned by it.

It will likely improve, and he immediately makes us a little better.

    Love this addition!

You’d think he would hit one just by accident…I mean it takes talent to miss that many in a row. Anyone checked to see if he had a draft kings app on his phone??

It's a common trait shared by schools  like Incarnate Word, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Texas Southern, Cal State-Northridge, Mercer, and Purdue.

It's sad in a way that not every school can be UCLA, Kentucky, UConn, UNC, Indiana, or Duke.

I’ll be happy to play the banner card again after we win one in this century. Until then I’m not throwing shade at anyone. We are a sorry program that hasn’t won anything in a very very long time. No B1G titles, No final fours, and no NCs.
