Steve was considered a major league a-hole here in Iowa. They felt he acted like he should be treated special because of who he was. And this was being said while he was a coach. After he left, good god how they rail on him. They hate him with a passion. If I want to get my Iowa friends going I just have to bring up Steve Alford. You'd think I kicked their puppy or punched their baby.

No its not. I live outside of Indiana where there are Badger, Hawkeye, Gopher, and Nebraska fans. None of them think we're a bad fanbase. They used to envy us. They wished to have what we have. Now they feel sorry for us. Feel like we haven't had good luck with coaches or players. But they aren't saying we're a bad fanbase. You should get a cape and some tights and become Super IU Scott. You can banish bad fans in a single post. "Off to the Peegs with you heathen". Stand at the top of your High Horse and look down upon us lowly, terrible fans who just don't see the error of our stupid ways.

Yeah, in your opinion. Not a professional opinion. Not an informed opinion backed up by data, examples or facts. An opinion you continually use to degrade and put other posters on blast because they don't immediately jump on the IU Scott train of thinking. It took you less than 12 hours from the moment the coach was announced to you telling posters they were bad fans and should back to Peegs. You can have your opinion and sometimes i even agree with what you say. But telling someone how to be a fan or support the program is not one of them

Sorry i thought he was on the 76 team, so started the 75 year. Regardless, i don't care when he played for IU. And honestly i don't care that he coached in the NBA. We're not an NBA team with NBA talent or resources or time, etc, etc, etc. Just my opinion.

mostly i am beige to it. Really want to see how he recruits. What kind of development he gets out of those who stay and what product we put on the floor. I don't care if he played for Bob Knight. I don't care he was part of the 75 team. I don't care that he has coaches in the NBA. I care that he can win games. Winning will make everyone happy. Period.

I don't know if it was WWW but didn't we have some concerns with a friend of the program some years back about some shady dealings. I have this vague memory about the board talking about it.

This is where you are always wrong Scott. You assume because people didn't like the hire or have something other than 100% positivity that they are not behind the program or that the fanbase is fractured. The program is bigger and will last longer than any one hire. I can love IU basketball and hate the administration, the coach and the current roster of players (not that i do, just an example). That doesn't change my love for the program. Coaches will come and go. Players will come and go. IU basketball will be there when they are dead and gone. I don't have to love the hire. I don't have to put on a smile and rah rah rah. I can say this hire sucks. I don't think it will work. And we'll be back here in 4 years. But game night, i will root for IU to win and for us to hang another banner. I love being proven wrong. But i don't need you or any other mouth breather telling me i am bad fan because i don't subscribe to your version of fandom. so STFU and move on if someone doesn't agree with you

I don't think anyone is not going to give him a chance, i just think those who didn't think he is a grand slam or home run hire have the right to no think he is the next Bob Knight that a lot of people are trying to say. Lets all take a breath from the Sunshine to the gloom and see how it plays out a bit. Other than the always hate everyone about IU people, most of the those who are disappointed will be here the whole time, rooting for IU and hoping they are wrong. But it is ok to not like the hire and still love the program. That is one of the biggest issues i have with some posters. Just because someone doesn't agree or subscribe to their opinion, they blast them and tell them to leave and go back to wherever and blah blah blah. They are as bad as the total negative people. Just my thoughts. Wait and see. Currently we're in a Schrodinger's Cat situation. The hire is both awesome and terrible at the same time. Its going to take a couple years to see which one it is. Neither opinion is currently correct. Root for IU though, is what we all do, just with different colored lenses in the glasses we wear

No its not. You have spent 4 years blasting College basketball and how its getting worst and worst and you can't stand to watch it. And just because coaches don't have NBA caliber offenses doesn't mean an NBA coach is FAR SUPERIOR than a college coach. There is so much different in college that they aren't nearly the same game. Not to mention the talent level and amount of time and resouce you have in the NBA vs College to practice and learn. Its easy to say implement a NBA style offense and defense, but you better have the talent and bbIQ players to do so. Look how long and hard it took for our current team to learn the defense CAM ran. I am just saying they are both called basketball but there is so much difference that they truly are not the same sport anymore.

I think the family culture and having a "home" might help with keeping kids out of the transfer portal or maybe entice some to come to IU, but i think its more for the alumni and donors to have more access to the program than they have had in a long time. I am not sure how open and welcoming Knight was to Alumni and Donors but i guess its something they have been wanting?

This is so completely based off of nothing. I agree Coach Woodson can coach since he has been an NBA head and assistant coach for years but come on. Far superior than Beard, Muss, Oats, Belein, Drew. etc? Based off of what. They are winning and accomplished coaches in the college ranks in their own rights. I know you're excited and hate when others don't agree with your point of view and you hate how college basketball is these days but come on man. He has no College experience and most of them have no NBA experience. One does not negate the other and vise versa. They might be both called basketball, but they are not even close to being the same game. We will need to wait and see how it translate to IU and I for one am willing to wait and see even though i don't like the hire. But this whole crowning him the next Bob Knight already and hanging the 6th banner might be a bit of over doing it some. And i know you and I don't see eye to eye on about 99% of anything Scott so don't take this as an attack or me being a bad fan, i am just not impressed with the hire. Doesn't mean he won't work out, but it also doesn't make him the a basketball savant either.

While i understand what your point is, you really can't compare college coaching and NBA coaching, either way. I don't think those who say what has he done have any more ground to stand on as those who say look what he did in the NBA. They don't translate up or down. We will just have to wait and see how he is as a college coach. But its ok to be excited and/or disappointed in the hire. Good God this fan base is so something [insert whatever word you can figure out]. We have those that jump and are all in the moment the decision is made and immediately stat bashing those that take a bit longer or even much longer to come to grips with it. And then you have the i couldn't be happy if Jesus was coaching the team because they just want something to bitch about. How about we let those be happy who want to be happy and those be sad or disappointed be disappointed. FFS guys, we're not all carbon copies of the same person. For 2 weeks this board was enjoyable. We were all on the same boat about discussing potential coaches, the NCAA tournament and that we surely did need a change. It took every bit of 12 hours to divide the board into factions again and start the mud slinging and name calling.

Wining cures all, but i don't see us in the final four anytime soon myself. And i just don't get how playing for Knight has anything all to do with anything anymore. But nothing to do now but debate it and recruiting for the next 9 months. Should be interesting

I would like to ask a question and not get blasted for it for the next 3 pages please. Why does it matter that ex-players love the hire? I get alumni /donors, that is where your money is coming from, although that can bite you in the ass with a bad hire. Its not like we're flooding the NBA with players that every kid knows and by extension what school they went to. Just a question, not sure I get how the "IU Guy" thing is going to help recruit anywhere outside of Indiana and maybe not even in the state of Indiana. Again, not trying to get blasted for being negative or a bad fan or getting myself banned because i am not "on board" with the hire. Just a question

I hate this hire. I didn't really know who Woodson was, which apparently makes me a bad fan. I wanted IU to open the vault and go Whale hunting. And regardless of any IU person/fan thinks, Woodson was not a Whale in any coaching community. Respected, sounds like it, but not a name in the top 10 of any school anywhere at any time. Will it work out, its why we play the games i guess. I am a little less enthused about IU basketball that I was with CAM at the helm so about as apathetic as before. I was surprised and a little upset by the hire but no more than when i pull up to get fuel and realize that it's now 3.25 instead of 2.99. I am just used to to it getting worst instead of better. And I am already seeing 5 years this or 6 years that in threads. This makes me a little more sad because I really don't want to spend the next 4 years debating how long a coach needs before he can implement "his" brand of basketball. I hope Woodson is the grand slam hire some of you keep saying. I hope he proves everyone wrong and knocks it out of the park. But if he was such a whale, why was he an assistant? Why was he never attached to any other programs coaching search? Winning cures all and makes Whales out of them all. If he wins that's al the matters. He just needs to win.

The culture is winning. Its no different that any other big school. Win and your culture is reconnected to the past. Winning cures all as they say. Can't do it the wrong way, but within the rules set by the NCAA.

Does IU know what it means to be IU Basketball anymore? That could be the problem. We're not selling IU basketball to recruits. We're selling IU the University with a basketball program. Big programs like Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, etc... Sell the basketball program and the added benefit of being good universities to boot. We need to own it again. We should be marketing it. We should be pouring money into it. We're the sleeping giant hoping for an invitation when we should be kicking the door in announcing that we're here. Fear by the administration is the only thing holding us back. The Alumni and the Fans are just waiting for a reason to pour money into IU again. Sell out games. Send their kids to their school. Hang banners! Dance in the streets. Chant and sing INDIANA, INDIANA, INDIANA I AM ALL FOR YOU!! It's all there. Its all for the taking. We just have to have the balls to walk into the coaches office we want and make him say yes. Don't settle. Don't beg. Don't bargain. Don't take no for an answer. Don't be freaking cheap. Give him the keys to the program, get our of his freaking way and tell him to put us back on the stage. Hang the next banner. Conference Champion. Conference tournament Champion. Elite Eight. Final Four. National Champion. Easier said than done? Yeah. All they have to do it try. It's literally just money. Money for New/Better facilities. Money for Coaches and Assistants. Money for Equipment. Money for Recruiting. Money for Advertising. Spend it like its growing on your trees out back. Then if you fail to make it. If you cannot rise from the past glory. You can say you tried. You gave it your all. You did what was needed and fell short.
