So, you think he should've fired himself???
I think I've made it pretty clear as have others you can let someone go and let the news drop without clarifying that he wasnt a good fit here, when the reality is we all wish our players fit into a dane fife. He's not some terrible person who broke the rules. Theres no need to clarify his departure but we did. I cant repeat it anymore

The university saying nothing would make this 1000x worse.
Until the university says anything and makes it official, it's just rumor and conjecture based on a reporter's story.
What did we say when Flint left again? Said nothing about a fit problem if I recall. Just that he’s leaving and left it at that.

Which again, aren't related.
You are purposely ignoring the difference in clarification and reporting at this point. They aren’t related, they’re comparable.

Dane got fired, what do you expect Woodson and IU to say?
It was a pretty congenial statement.
Nothing? We got the news he’s leaving. Nobody is owed anything more. How many times have we intentionally never followed up on clarifying a story around the program? Like, say, when our players got suspended this year?

He did? Where?
He said a fit is necessary and has decided to make a change with that in mind. How do I interpret this as anything but Mike clarifying it’s Dane who doesn’t fit here?

Who said Woodson did no wrong? but he was being crucified after the announcement without anyone knowing the reason for the firing.
I mean in this very thread I'm reading time and again how Dane is a lesser person than Mike and Mike had to do what he had to do. Haven't heard a peep about what Mike may have done to sour the relationship. Which is why you never let this stuff surface in the first place. Mike had no problem owning blame for games our players clearly lost for us during the season, he should know to own this one as well. But instead, he chose to clarify its Dane who doesnt fit here. Unnecessary and embarrassing.

we've now reached ranking who is the better human being so I think I'm out. So much of this is such strange rationalizing to confirm to yourselves Mike can do and has done no wrong when the only concrete stuff we have to go on is that IU took a detour to let the public know Dane Fife doesnt fit here.

Or #2 just could be looked at like nbd at all?
we've established thats how you feel about this but others feel differently and its just as valid. I care that theyre going the extra mile to know he didnt fit with us. Its strange and its almost like deflecting blame off of anything Mike may have done to sour the relationship. Which we know nothing concrete about.

I don’t understand why this is such a big deal. Literally no one cares except for 20 people and Fife’s family. If these details didn’t come out, this would be 50 pages of people bashing Woodson. Woodson is still here at IU. A little bit of self preservation here with the leaked details. If even half of what has been reported is true, it sounds like Fife was more of a detriment to the program than anything. Cut the wart off. It will heal back better.
If I'm an assistant coach I'm laughing at the idea of coming here right now. If you don't fit they make sure everyone knows its because of you and not them, and let the rumor mill eat your reputation up.
Fife and his family should also be enough to consider it a big deal. Don't make his exit worse on him when you're the one forcing him out because he doesnt fit with you. Dane didnt do anything wrong or illegal and this is Mike's choice.

If there was no explanation then the fan base would be going crazy to know why they fired him.
And how many times has our rabid fanbase been dying to know something about our program and they never cave in? They don't owe us anything. Cite irreconcilable differences or let dane find somewhere else to go first.

Woodson or IU didn't say anything bad about Dane. If you are going by Rabjohn's post that wasn't from Woodson or IU
There are two separate fronts here:
1) Peegs should NEVER post something like they did and they know it now because it's gone. And the fact that this kind of info leaks while the program is usually so incredibly tight lipped about everything else is telling to me.
2) Mike should not have clarified that he wasnt a fit and was fired. Nobody outside of the program needs to know that, especially when most people outside the program cherish him. It's just a way to alienate fans and be intentionally abrasive. It has virtually nothing to do with how effective or ineffective Dane was on staff.

Literally the only people that care. Fife isn't a legend.
Fife was in a national championship at IU and is the all time steals leader, but sure he's not a legend and we should probably drag his name a little bit more just so he gets the message he's not wanted here.

I'm absolutely amazed man. You know the Fife stuff happened and your frustrations aren't with him. I don't actually understand that.
Who says im not frustrated with him too? That's why I'm telling you it's right to let him go. But why isnt it a separate frustration that there is no reason you or I should know any of this business? We let this leak but everything else is also so tight lipped? It's embarrassing.

Did you not read the press release? Woodson thanked him.
The Fife stuff happened man. Idk what to tell you. He messed up. Bad.
I dont care that he thanked him when he first ensures everyone knows Dane was fired. It's just weird. And its way worse to let these details go out by somebody like Peegs. I dont know how you take seriously that we want to bridge the past with stuff like that.
I believe the Fife stuff happened, I believe its the right call to have let him go. But there is just no scenario where you let this stuff get out and even clarify beyond his departure to make him look bad. It's just a garbage thing to do to someone a lot of people admire. This would be a bit different if it were some no name assistant coach.

Why wasnt Dane more willing to be a part of that bridge once on campus?
We have no accurate idea what he was and wasnt willing to be honestly. We have rumors at best. I could fire back and say why isnt Mike more amenable to solving this than showing a former hoosier the door in such a short amount of time.
That's why you keep a lid on stuff like this, but we've chosen the other route. That's what people are currently not a fan of.

So we're upset about the wording of a press release of a fired asst coach?
the assistant coach is an all time hoosier and was brought in less a year ago. I am upset that we are making this guy out to be some jackass who never fit here and dragging his name on the way out. It is completely against this idea that we're bridging the past. Going the extra step to clarify he was fired is just irresponsible because of how it looks externally.

I don't see anyway shape or form that those two situations are comparable in regards to what Peegs reported.
theyre comparable by their degree of detail. Multiple players got suspended in an instant and we lost a game over it. That is objectively a larger story than an assistant coach leaving as it has immediate and real ramifications on an active season. Yet we got very little details about anything to do with that except "wasnt drug related" which could be inferred by the fact that they were still on the bench anyway, and now with Fife leaving we're getting all sorts of supposed details about what went on behind the scenes.
It's a terrible choice by Peegs, and I think Dan has a point that they do tow the line the administration asks of them.

Even if it is 100% true, saying "Based on what I have personally observed, as well as what I have heard from trusted sources, the coaching change appears to be justified" would have gotten the message out.
The majority of IU fans understand that Rabby has inside information. Between what Woodson said and what I suggested Rabby should have said above would have made it clear that a divorce was in order.
Divorce details, no matter how sensational, dont need to be aired publicly.
Yes I was married, and yes the stewardess was on the clock during that flight to London. But, it wasn't the business of the nosy lady in 37B.
Hypothetical story, of course.
This is exactly the logic that should be applied here. Dane is beloved and the all time steals leader. We have preached incessantly about bridging the past. In what universe is it consistent with that kind of branding to go the extra mile and let the info as to why he was fired be leaked, or even specify he's being fired at all? Why can't we let him leave silently? Someone who so obviously contributed a lot to the program.
This was not handled well and I will not be surprised if we pay for this one way or another. I wouldnt want to work for a guy who does this because it looks so hypocritical from the outside. It really has very little to do with how justified it was to fire Dane or not.

I'm pretty stunned how many people are respecting (and even appreciating) this firing considering how its going down. Mike goes out of his way to explain hes being fired and hes not a fit, Rabjohns is given info that damages Fife's character on his way out, and we send an all-time hoosier packing after 1 year after preaching about bridging the past.
If he's insubordinate and constantly mentioning politics I dont think that has a place in a coaching staff either, but I dont know why Mike goes the extra step to specify that he was fired. It just seems intentionally abrasive. The fact that Rabjohns even leaked something like that is going to damage our reputation for future assistant hires unless its some Mike Woodson yes-man.

Anyone who doesn’t want TJD & Race back is an idiot.
You played O$U even with 6 players because those 2 set a physical tone especially on defense
I dont think its that ridiculous to not want TJD back. He's good enough to run a system through, but not good enough to close competitive upper level games in the conference. He has a poor showing against other top bigs, and in 3 years we can't even call his jumper inconsistent because it's yet to exist.
We will be immediately worse without him, yes. But I don't think we're ever winning much with him either.

1) Very puzzled with why Trevion Williams was allowed to take the shots he did for them. I thought his turnovers and 2 shots he took towards the end of the game threw them out of it, not even mentioning their terrible free throw shooting.
2) Not sure why Edey didn't just play the full game against us either. A few things added up to me feeling Painter got badly outcoached on this one even if purdue had strong out of bounds stuff going on.
3) As a habitual Rob critic I am happy to call a ceasefire from here forth. There's nothing you can really say to someone after a game like that besides great job. Others have said he solidified himself in the program's history and he certainly has now.
