Filipowski was probably my favorite recruit in this class.  But I am not aware of any connections he had with IU and he is from a state far away.  So, IU was just a school on his list.  The reality check here is that a guy like this is tough to pull until we can distinguish ourselves on the floor.

We did get Bates, and our staff has a lot of positive momentum, but to consistently get a kid like this, we need a big turnaround season, IMO.

I don’t know that we were “just” a school on his list. He wouldn’t have used an official visit on us if that is the case. I’ll believe we’re out when he commits elsewhere or he’s quoted saying that.

Never too early to talk high school hoops.  I saw an early draft of the Silver Creek schedule today and it has Milan on it.  At Creek though.  Hope it's a home and home and we go up there next season.

I grew up in KY so I don’t know the IN HS scene. Is Milan still as small as it was portrayed in Hoosiers? They typically have good basketball?

    Without having more information, no.

Agree. We’re getting projected as a 10 based on previous seasons. Based on the talent, assuming they learn the system in a timely manner, we should be at worst a 6-7 (borderline ranked) in my book. No way Illiniois should be a 7 based on what they lost. Lunardi been paying attention? Or does the transfer portal have him all delusional?

Decent team. RPI usually in the mid 100's somewhere. One of those teams that has ups and downs when some heavy senior classes graduate and takes time for the younger players to step up and replace. They didn't face really anyone at the mid or high major last year so hard to tell. Basically 500 team but who knows if a lot of guys return or graduate. Not a team that size should bother us....level of team that usually relies on guard play which I would think will be to our advantage next year with who we have coming in. At least our cup cakes aren't powder puffs....nothing that should scare us but enough challenge to take teams seriously.

Competing for an NCAA tournament bid every year. Not a bad non-conference game.

Intelligent people can have stupid ideas.,,,,

Passive aggressive way of calling somebody stupid in THAT moment. Not sure on an opinionated subject why anybody thinks their opinion is more valid than somebody else’s, hence why the need to say “THAT is stupid”.  Pretty simple to just say “I disagree” right?

On the subject, the kid isn’t even that highly ranked or thought of. He’s only being talked about because of his Dad. So is that why we’d want him because we think it would bring positive publicity? No thanks. He’d fit great at a place like UK.

Nothing wrong with your post and I tend to agree with you.  Time will tell on how this works out.  One thing I don't know about any of these kids is the culture they grew up in/growing up in.  One thing I know is how I grew up.  I didn't grow up with bullets flying all around.  The only gang I knew was the "Our Gang"  I lived with and knew who my parents were.  I didn't "want" for anything.  I had lots of presents under the tree every Christmas.  Most importantly I never went to bed hungry ever.

Had I been "miserable" I might have walked the same path these young men are going to walk...

I get it, but just hope they have the right people guiding them or they’ll end right back up with bullets flying around them.

So I will agree I don't want us to turn in to a 5 star factory, but we will have to agree to disagree about the rest. I would love Cal's results and I can't really think of many/any character issues.

I'll just say I would take Cal over Izzo any day. Both have really good results, both go about it different ways, but I can't buy in to the fact that one and done equates to character issues.

I don’t think you want Woody recruiting guys solely based on their stars without completing his due diligence. That leads to character issues or cultural issues. I was not making a direct correlation.  It has happened on numerous occasions at UK under Cal and I know that for certain. It’s just not always made public.

How has he made so many Final Fours if he keeps getting outcoached in the tournament?

I understand he brings in a lot of talent, but he's taken three different schools to Final Fours and gotten a lot of guys to buy in to playing as a team where others have failed with guys that aren't even that talented. Maybe it isn't great x and o coaching but it certainly is great leadership.

Well, for one…. again, he somehow convinces multiple 5 star kids to come to UK annually. (Yet for some reason can’t get any to stay more than one year.)

Secondly, he’s rarely tested in a normally weak conference which helps him secure top seeds almost every year making it much easier to win 4 games and make final fours. GUARANTEE his results would not have been the same to date if UK was in the Big10. Seeding is a big deal.

Most UK fans think he’s a lousy X’s and O’s guy, but maybe you’re right. He’s able to foster an environment where all of these high ego guys that don’t care about school (most) buy into his plan. Buying in is definitely important for any coach or you can’t get past first base, but I hope we don’t turn into a one and done factory like he has where he throws out offers to every 5 star and doesn’t care about character, etc. I hope we are more strategic and the TYPE of people we bring in fit the program. Not saying I don’t hope for the same type talent, just hope it’s not at the expense of the culture Woody is building. Trust me, all Cal cares about is talent. He doesn’t do his homework on the front end.

Makes him very dangerous.  If he does a better job of balancing proven veteran transfers with incoming 5 star talent, he fixes the problem he's had the last few years.

Most underachieving coach in college basketball just got a lifeline. And I don’t want to hear people say all of us would have loved to have his results blah blah blah. The guy has had a top 3 recruiting class 10 years in a row and has ONE title, thanks to a once-in-a-lifetime recruit in AD. Results may have been even less if they didn’t play in the weakest Power 5 conference and able to coast most of the year. Gets out-coached every year in the tourney.

They have one of the most complete rosters in the B1G..yes I expect them to finish in the top 3. As long as we finish higher I could care less what they do.

Sounded like you were rooting for Purdue to dethrone them if we don’t. The ONLY team I’m rooting for Purdue to beat is the team coached by Calimari.

B1G will do well to get one W on the road.   Those match ups dont look favorable.

Amen, but I don’t think our potential L will be due to lesser talent. I’m encouraged at how we stack up against most. Just need a couple guys to come through as the shooters we need and hope the change in system isn’t too much of a shock too early.

I’ll try to respond to this without getting too much onto the edge of what the mods think is political.

We are in the era of hypersensitivity to anything that doesn’t make people feel warm and fuzzy. The generation of kids in question is heart and soul in the middle of many of the “movements “ our society finds itself trying to navigate through. The so-called “adversity “ these guys think they are dealing with is laughable as compared to the conditions faced by some of the previous generations. We live in a time where too many young people have been coddled and pandered to. The sense of entitlement here is fair evidence of this.

God forbid that these guys take personal responsibility for their futures and stop whining that they aren’t being supported.

I lived in the Madison area long enough to know that there is absolutely a part of the population who is in the corner of the players and staunchly backs the “participation ribbon “ mentality. In a progressive city like this, these players have a platform that wouldn’t play as well in some other places.
