I graduated in 2021. Had many teachers that were very politically biased and left… I’m sure these are the ones voting no confidence which comes as no surprise. Half the faculty there is extremely lazy and terrible at their job. These professors are all power hungry.

Since you're a fairly recent grad, I find your perspective interesting,  although I'm going to try to turn down the political heat some and take the position that no political bias of any stripe belongs in the classroom. What you say has a ring of truth to my experience with my daughter's time in dental school.  Her experience wasn't as bad as you're indicating yours was, but I'd expect dental school professors are, in general, more professional than some of the undergrad faculty you're describing.

That being said, yeah...I get political bias creeping into poly sci classes (even though it shouldn't there either), but when politics even creep into dental school classrooms and administration,  you've got a problem that I referred to as 'institutional rot" in a topic I started in Crester's Corner.  There's too much interest in indoctrination vs. actual  education and it's far from just IU.  Even the Ivy's are struggling with this and in my mind, it's ruining and devaluating college education in America. To be fair, it's not all the faculty there.  I have a high school friend that teaches at IU. Knowing him as I do, I don't believe he lets politics into his classroom, at least not to the point of trying to teach students what to think, but I know it happened to my daughter both during her undergrad at USI and dental school at IU and I didn't like it and didn't appreciate having to pay for it.  I suspect the heat Whitten is taking here is at least partially from an effort to reduce the level of political bias at IU. I think she's right to avoid taking strong positions in controversial topics such as the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and abortion.  I feel that way regardless of whether or not I'd personally agree with the side a school took. I simply don't feel like politics belong on most classrooms.  Even poly sci professors should strive to teach the ideas while avoiding the bias, although I recognize it's tougher in that discipline.

Imagine how unwelcome someone like Yarden Garzone feels if one of her teachers leads an anti-Israeli demonstration and calls her people murderers?  I get that you can't (and shouldn't) suppress the student's free speech.  I also get that you can't instruct faculty what to personally believe.  At the same time, I think it's fair to insist that faculty keep their personal biases out of the classroom and teach instead of attempting to indoctrinate.

It sounds like that's at the root of the conflict between Whitten and some of the faculty and assuming I'm correct, I'm on her side. Ditch the politics and focus on your mission...education.

I look forward to the first portal announcement that doesn’t use the words “with that being said.”

I thought the same thing..."...you all were wonderful and I had a great time, but on second thought, it really wasn't as good as I'm pretending it is or I wouldn't be in the portal."

Just once, I'd love to see "in reality, Duke sucked.  Lots of broken promises and coach Scheyer is an unpleasant *sshole when things didn't go 100% his way.  He had his favorite pets and wasn't really much help in developing my game.  I'm outta here."

Seems like people are realizing that Scheyer is no coach K 🤷🏼‍♂️

Maybe.  I figured the honeymoon was still on considering the recruits he was signing, but maybe a little bit of the shine is gone.

Safe to say, the honeymoon is over for Greg Gard.

Trevor andershock just did a scouting report on him & im assuming he wouldnt of if he told us no, so nothing to be worried about at the moment in my book

Absolutely could be misdirection like Ballo announcing ten minutes after it was reported he was visiting Arkansas.

Or it could be true.  I'll react after it's announced.

RTZ gets a lot more street cred if he's in the minority and right, though.

  5. I don't know if it reached a vote of no confidence, but I recall the Purdue faculty, or the least a pretty substantial minority being unhappy with Mitch Daniels.  I didn't pay enough attention to observe how that played out and I don't know if there were any other parallels to the IU dissension.  Sounds like the majority of the IU faculty didn't even participate in the vote so this may be a case of a vocal minority trying to rule.

  6. On the surface, this goes to my past posts about institutional rot and the damage it's doing to IU.  It appears that the president is attempting to pull IU back from the abyss.  What I've read thus far, I don't think the president is any more the problem at IU than Woody is.  It's a much bigger issue as evidenced by the vote of no confidence.

For now, I'll resist the urge to say more.

That's because for you and me, those are our "good old days".  In 35 years, there's going to be guys in their mid 30s-50s saying "Can you believe that as little as 35 years ago, they weren't paying these guys? But I don't know about XYZ-change....I think it ruins the integrity of the game."

35 years ago, it was "Can you believe that 25 years ago, the slam dunk was illegal? It's part of what makes the game exciting.  I don't know about this 3 point line stuff though...ruins the integrity of the game."

Maybe.  It's a good argument. That being said, I've always preferred amateur sports to professional sports and I suspect I always will.  What's the main difference between amateur and professional sports...?

All of the following are real quotes from high-major D1 college basketball coaches:

Sounds like they're talking about the portal/NIL, doesn't it?

    They're not.

Know what they're talking about? They're talking about the exact thing that everyone in this thread is clamoring for, even the "old school" guys.....

All of the above quotes are from 1986-87, and the coaches are talking about the adoption of the 3 point line.

Just a reminder that even in our own personal "good old days", there was a "get off my lawn" guy yearning for HIS "good old days".  Things are always evolving.  That doesn't make change inherently good or inherently bad, but change is always present.

I hear what you're saying but I still don't like how out of hand things have gotten.  I'm good with the leveling of the playing field but I don't ever recall feeling this way about the 3-point line.

So you accepted an irrational NCAA gestapo system but not an NIL system that is market value based? That’s hypocritical.

🤣🤣🤣 That's not even remotely market-based.  Ever heard of the term irrational exuberance?

I hope it’s here forever. lol.

honestly every IU fan should support NIL bc it’s the vehicle to get back to prominence. Without it there is no hope. The Dukes etc of the world will still be paying for the top players and IU would always be an afterthought.

I know.  It just feels like it's out of control and needs a major correction.  Paying a kid $1.2 million to play ball while he gets his degree just seems plain crazy/irrational.  I'll never love it, but I'll accept a rational system
