    Great article Joe.  Thanks.

Dolson clearly is thinking globally.  He's just not hiring a basketball coach, trotting him out there, and hoping for the best.  He's providing support with Motta and giving him the money to hire good coaches.  The Fife hire was brilliant for both basketball and non-basketball reasons.  Fife and CMW have a number of things in common, but one of the most important is that they both really love IU and want to spend the rest of their professional career at IU promoting not just IU basketball but IU.  This creates great synergy within the university, in the state of Indiana, and for IU alums outside of Indiana.  For example, CRMK was well known for his promotion of the IU Library.  This makes the basketball program just something you go to see on Thursdays and Saturdays (I'm dating myself).  But it's connected to what is very important to the university and the students.

There's a lot more to discuss here.  I liked to here from some of you especially marketing folks who actually know what they are talking about unlike me.

But when all is said and done Dolson, Woodson, and company have to win and win big to make it work.

I agree with this take. I know nothing about marketing, but I know when it works on me. I also agree 100% that winning needs to follow. We will see next year, but winning programs have foundations. It seems we finally have one after 20 years.

Mike Woodson's lone promise to Tamar Bates sounds a lot like the way Bob Knight once recruited, and probably the way Knight recruited Woodson.

“Coach Woodson stressed to me that I will become a better man"

And that was the main thing Bates needed to hear.

I liked everything I read. Kid sounds like an absolute winner with some old school mentality, and I liked the sound of Woodson's recruiting approach.  Really fun read, thanks.

Not going to speak for @IUDan93, but my comment was TIC to some of the no sunshine allowed crowd... Although I will point out that our 12-15 team from last year...

    1. Had no frontcourt depth due to Joey's injury late in the preseason.

    2. Went without our second leading scorer for a few games and he was obviously compromised when he did play

    3. Didn't have the additional outside threat if Parker Stewart

I don't know who other B1G teams have coming back, but we'll have a great mix of upper classmen and younger guys who can play. It's not like we were blown out of every game...I can only think of 3 we weren't competitive in (Texas, Michigan, OSU).

With the changes on both ends of the floor that Woody will make, I can see us making a significant improvement with our current roster (and assuming Race and Armaan come back)...

I'm IUDan93, and I endorse this message. I will add the fact that we played many teams tough this year, just not for 40 minutes. If Coach can simply get them to play for 40, our record will improve dramatically.

  4. Kids who have a goal of getting to the NBA have family, coaches, handlers, etc. who help make decisions.  I doubt they care about name recognition as much as the story the coach has, the experiences with working with the NBA, and why they have credibility with getting players paid.  Listening to so many former players gush about Woodson gives me great confidence that recruiting will likely be a strength.  I bet high school coaches and coaches in the AAU cesspool will buy into him. In reading this board for years, it more often comes down to where the adults in the kids life "pushes" kids to go. That's part of the reason people say we need to go to Nike.

  5. You know, age doesn't matter as much as some are trying to make out. Many kids lean on grandparents all the time and appreciate their wisdom. Also, if we are worried that he can't coach for 20 years, but maybe for only another 10-12, well that will mean that he has been successful, because CAM only got 4 years and Crean 9.  I hope he does well enough to get an extension, because being young and having the potential for 20-25 years as coach didn't work out for Archie.  We need a coach that does well for the next 3-4 years, and than go from there.
