  1. They won't at first, then a Kentucky will drop a large amount of extras on a recruiting class, win a title, and start an arms race. Same will happen on the football side. All it takes is one school to start it and eventually everyone who wants to truly compete has to get on board too. The funny thing to me is that for most of these schools, the revenue generated by the athletes goes directly back to the athletes. Our basketball players stay in the nicest apartments in town. They have tutors. They have their own practice facility that they get use of any time of day. And if you removed the college aspect from the teams, these guys would be getting paid an average of $35k a year to play games in places like Sioux City and Fort Wayne to crowds of about 5,000 people. And they sure as heck would not have the perks that the colleges are giving them. I honestly think that the big time players are given more credit for driving the money than they deserve. They are there for a year. Most fans are not tuning in to see Top Rated Player X. They are tuning in to watch Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, and UNC. That money is not there if the college name is not attached. I don't care what anybody says, the minor leagues would not make NCAA money with the same players because the attachment to those teams is not there unless you are from the area. People in Fort Wayne don't care about the Indianapolis Indians and people in Indianapolis do not care about the Mad Ants. People in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis do care about Indiana, Purdue, and Notre Dame. The South Bend Steel Heads (fictitious NFL developmental team) are not going to be followed by anyone outside of their footprint. I just think the players are vastly overestimating their worth in a sport where the average player is on his team for 2 or 3 years at the big schools.
  2. This is somewhat interesting. With Title IX, the cost of sports is going to go up even more. Let's be real, only 2 sports (Football and Men's basketball) would be able to maintain themselves as businesses if you stripped away the colleges from them. This is going to sound cruel, but at a certain point the cost to maintain things like women's gymnastics or men's wrestling will not be worth it.
  3. What body part do you have to cut off to afford living in a place like that?
  4. You are like a content machine Thanks for doing what you do.
  5. https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-offers-2023-guard-jeremy-fears-jr-who-left-very-impressed-with-program-after-visit/ Sounds like Woodson (and IU) really made an impression.
  6. That Matta decision might be looking even better this summer. https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/waiver-granted-allow-basketball-instruction-non-coaching-staff-members-summer Looks like this was really aimed at grad assistants and I think we picked up a good one there too, but man, it is going to be really terrible when Dane, Rosemund, and Hunter are on the road and we are left with...Thad freaking Matta to help run practices with Coach Woodson.
  7. If he does, I wish him nothing but failure while there. Hate that program to begin with. Kryzewski is second only to John Wooden in the interference that has been run for him by sports media. Glad to see him go.
  8. Saw Oladipo might be out all next year. Man did he ever make a mistake not accepting the Pacers' and then Miami's offers. He is going to lose tens of millions of dollars.
  9. Indiana fans for 4 years: "We need size and shooting..." Archie Miller: "Meh" Mike Woodson in 2 months: "Done and done." All the moves that have been made this off season really lead me to believe that the former caretakers of the program did not have a clue what they were doing here. Seriously, Woodson was here for 2 months, took a look at the roster, recognized the same deficiencies that the fanbase has been complaining about for years and goes out and addresses the issues. In 2 months. Not 4 years. 2 months. Miller was awful. That being said, welcome to Durr. Having 7'0 250 lbs available on the roster is a luxury we have not had here often lately.
  10. I have been married for 14 years myself. The social media stuff was around when I was dating my wife but it was not like it is today. I don't necessarily know the etiquette either, but if I got kicked off the team, I would want that I was leaving as quiet as possible. At least until I found a place to land. Honestly, I was just trying to provide an alternative to the idea he was not liked by his teammates.
  11. Maybe in person but not on social media. I guess in one case (Al) you are posting a celebration of their next challenge. So you can view that as a positive. "Good luck my guy, tear it up at Providence(?)" If it was true that Hunter was asked to leave, that is not like a celebratory thing. "Hey, congrats you got booted from the team..." To me that is a situation you don't put on social media. Think of it like the girlfriend. When you dump her and move on to someone else, that is something that your friends may be cool to congratulate you on. When she dumps you, that is not really a "good luck and onto the next one" you blast on social media. That is more of a private convo. Just my opinion.
  12. Maybe the difference between you breaking up with your S/O and them breaking up with you. In Al's case, I think he probably decided to move on. So your teammates reach out and say good luck at your next place. If Jerome was told to leave, that is a bit different. You don't offer congrats to someone who got dumped. Just another way to look at it other than saying his teammates were not fans.
  13. This is the perfect situation for Woodson IMO. For whatever reason, the freshmen we landed are not getting much fanfare. Duncomb more than held his own against Furst when they played, his ranking shows they are closer than many of the fans of your team would want to admit. I think, even with the loss of Franklin and Durham, that the talent we have coming in for next year is a big upgrade. The news has been slow around here lately...seems like the program is just quietly humming along right now. I really like this team on paper. We may not be a national title contender next year, but I think Indiana is going to win games. And for the coach and players, it seems really quiet for once. They are going to have time to get the team in place. I do not like the lack of things to talk about, but I love what that could mean.
  14. At this point, who cares. Boy wonder is not coming here and he was probably smart to turn down that offer because I don't think he would meet the expectations that salary would set. I don't know if anyone could.
  15. Yeah...but what happened there was all genuine on the players' side. I think that Woodson is going to do really well recruiting these guys. We have 3 really good set up assistants and then Woody comes in and deals the deal. There is a real possibility that we may be looking back in 6 or 7 years wondering why the heck we did not give this a chance sooner.
  16. labeck...not seeing it. The guy asking that question's name is Lance Becker. Quit trying to steal clout.
  17. A really good basketball prospect who has apparently never eaten a cheeseburger or lifted weights in his life.
  18. The Holmgren kid just picked Gonzaga. That program is on easy street if they continue to recruit like that. Basically guaranteed a 1 or 2 seed in the tournament every year with that janky conference they play in.
  19. Reading too much into it IMO. Now we need a forward and we are set. I think the competitiveness of practices is about to pick up.
  20. He will stand in the corner and wait for the kick out to hit shots. Calipari is finally figuring out that dribble driving into traffic does not work that great if the talent on your team cannot buy a bucket from deep. See also, Indiana.
  21. The issue with Drew, in my mind, was that he threatened to deport a player from one of our biggest recruiting pipelines in this state. The kids are gone but the guys running that show are still there. He just won a title anyway, he was not leaving that situation.
  22. I am not a new fan. I am a fan that realizes that things change. Like letting NBA players in the Olympics. That changed because the U.S. got tired of college kids playing pros. NIL is about to change things some more. Like it or not, the cheaters won. They won so much that the rules are changing. More than anything the past 20 years, I believe that Indiana's reluctance to play the games that Kansas, Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc. played is what led to us being mediocre. We can say we did things the right way but without a Hall of Fame coach to hold it together, you lose...a lot. When this gray area becomes a-okay, you want a guy who knows how to navigate that world. I totally get the "winning the right way" mantra but I really do not believe that many programs (including Indiana) have not been in that territory. Those who were more willing to lean in have been more successful and those like Indiana who have been reluctant have not. A rule unenforced is not really a rule anymore. The NCAA does not do jack about it if you don't self punish...so if they don't care, why should I?
  23. We have had guys like that under about every coach in my lifetime. Knight hired former cheaters. Davis I am more iffy on, but I think he had a few questionable guys. Sampson himself. Crean had Kenny Johnson. Miller worked for his brother and I believe Ostrom was considered Florida's "bag man" when he was there. This is the reality of the past 40+ years, not sure why you just now are getting upset about it.
  24. I think you are on to it. Hiring that guy would fit in with the pivot that is occurring if people are paying attention. There are some things that are currently not allowed that are about to become a little less grey, kind of like Sampson and the phone calls. We are positioning ourselves with some people who played the old game so that we can take advantage when the "extra phone calls" are allowable behavior.
  25. I don't wish him good luck really, I wish him good health. Hope he stays healthy and don't really give much of a crap outside of that.
