I can't agree. I think giving Gunn a scholarship, let alone minutes on a B1G basketball team was one of the decisions that sealed the fate of our season.

Leal's ability to be in the right spot is a huge plus, more so than the lack of athletic ability is a minus. There hasn't been one single time where I watched CJ Gunn and thought, "wow, I'd like to see him get more mins"

If we wanted to win dunk contests, by all means, PLAY Gunn...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't believe for a second Gunn outplayed Leal in practice from March-Oct. So either our HC didn't watch those practices, or he was too dead set on running offense with the 2nd unit through CJ Gunn (lol) to realize Leal is quite a bit more of an effective basketball player.

This is Leal's ceiling. There was no way he was ever going to grow into a guy that can finish at the rim or create his own shot. Gunn's ceiling is quite high. I doubt he ever gets there, and he certainly isn't anywhere near it now, but he's a smooth athlete that could be a really good, multi-level scorer with the size and speed to be a force on defense. That's what we need, so we had to see if he could become that. Some guys click when given the chance.

After March-October, and then from what we've seen from Gunn, Banks, Cupps, no Newton, and an open scholly..  coupled with our horrible play early on...

How in the world was it Dec 29th before Leal saw double digit mins?

I've never been on team Gunn, so I mostly agree with you, but still, it's not hard to see why. Look at what happened every time, other than the game winner, Leal had the ball at the basket. His lack of athleticism is a huge minus. Giving Gunn opportunities made a lot of sense.

Seems like people will be pissed regardless. And in the same realm of "what ifs" what if May takes one of those jobs and sucks? And what if he does well and is still open to coming to IU? All are possibilities as much as anything else mentioned.

I hope May takes one of these jobs. Right now, he’s an Archie level hire. I wouldn’t hate it, but I’m not the least bit upset if we miss out on first dibs.

serious question - for the 1 or 2 Woodson backers - are you also big believers in XJ?  i'm just wondering if that is part of the buy in for the few wanting Woodson back?  do you believe X would have been the difference this season?

I'm not really who you're talking to, as I would prefer that Woodson is gone, but, if the choice is between Woodson with lots of NIL money and Day with little to none, I'm okay with Woodson back.

I believe that if X would have lived up the potential he showed in his first year with us, we would be a very good team right now. I don't have a strong opinion as to why he didn't, it could be injuries, it could be Woodson's fault, could be X didn't work hard enough or listen enough - I think it's just some guys don't have it and things never click, it's no one's fault it just is what it is.

So grain of salt because message board, but this is supposedly the master plan.

If this guy is even in the right ballpark with his numbers (he says we have $6 million for the portal this year and that the average power conference starter makes $250k and the top 10 guys make around $1 million), then I like our chances for next year. That suggests we are spending way more than any other team in the portal this year. I'm sure it's not quite as simple as just making the highest offer, but those numbers suggest we can double what top teams are offering for 3 different guys. I don't think we're going to miss on very many guys we want if that's true.

They don’t know that CBB is now all about the portal

Are they not really the proof of that? They've had a steady stream of NBA talent, and not just NBA bound guys, but legit NBA stars, and still they disappoint almost every year. I'd rather have a transfer than a one year guy. Woody is playing the new money ball. I don't know if he can put the right guys together, but I think he has the right idea.

  7. I know these things have been discussed here before, but there are too many pages to search through. Does anyone know how much money we save by firing Woodson in a year rather than this coming week? Does anyone know how much it would cost to buy our Pearl and/or May today vs. a year from now?

Would you rather have Pearl with limited money, or Woodson plus 10 million dollars to spread around? There's certainly an argument to be made that the money would put us in a better spot to have a competitive roster next year, bring in a new coach a year from now, and have a better roster in place for the new guy - plus more money for the new guy to build with.

He left a scholarship open and only targeted highly ranked guys.  There were plenty of guys a level below he could've added to have more guard depth, but he put too much focus on top tier talent much like he has done for the 2024 high school recruits.

As I said the roster is his fault, but if you are coach of this team with these players going into the year, what are you supposed to do? My only real point is, I don't know that we have a real idea of how Woody would like to run his offense, we simply know that his teams (partially, maybe largely his own fault) have had a lot of offensive talent in the post and very little elsewhere. He then did what he had to do.

He could have played MM at the 4, but then who's the 3? Banks? Gunn? We just never had the talent. Ware and Reneau are far and away our best two offensive players. It's hard not to play them.

It does make sense though. Woodson spent two years saying the two bigs/post offense wasn't what he wanted but he had to use TJD and Race.

He sold the fans and probably McNeely on that too.

Then this year is more of the same, except even worse.

I don't mean to defend him too much, but what was he supposed to do with this team? Have Cupps score 20 a night? X? There just weren't options. Certainly the roster is his fault, but he at least tried to get guys like Love and Knecht.

What stinks for me as a fan is the fact that buying players for the now eliminates the (potential) joy of seeing some develop and grow in their careers. Some players don't get it until they're upperclassmen. Watching Victor Oladipo become Victor OLADIPO!! took time, and it was a wonderful thing to see. His blossoming was enjoyable because of where he started and where he ended up.

It's highly unlikely Kaleb Banks or CJ Gunn return -- and I mean this with the utmost sincerity -- it sucks that we won't get the chance to see their possible growth. Of course they are responsible for their own effort, but the downside to constantly buying players is that we eliminate the chances of seeing the next Haston, Wilmont, Evans, Coverdale, etc. growing and succeeding (and truly becoming) Indiana Hoosiers.

We're seeing Galloway and Leal doing that right now. We saw Race do it last year. I agree, we won't see it from Banks, but I see no reason to think he is ever going to be a rotation player at this level. It's not like promising guys are leaving after 1 year. No longer promising guys are leaving after 2 - assuming Gunn actually leaves, I wouldn't be surprised either way. My guess is we will see Cupps grow over 4 years. Hopefully Newton will get the chance, too.

I grew up in Indiana idolizing the Hoosiers.  But, if I was a 20 year old elite college guard, and IU offered me more NIL money than any other school, I'm not taking it.

As a guard, I would not want to play in this system or for the coaching staff that runs this system.  I would leave a few NIL dollars on the table to play in a system where I could succeed, even if pkaying for that team was my childhood dream.

Can IU overpay for a 2nd tier guard?  Sure they can.  But, how much does that help the team?

On the flip side, if I'm an athletic big like TJD and Ware, I'm begging this staff to take me.

    JHS disagrees with your take.

Texas tech has only made one final four. They did have a lot of transfers but I dont remember the amount. They also fell off the next year and won 18 games. Then 18 the following year as well. That was also pre-NIL. This season there was a stat that was posted on social media that every team that took more than 4 were not projected to make the tournament.

Now with NIL the top teams can offer money and a chance to win by supplementing. So IU in order to have a chance to land the pieces to be a contender next season will need to raise a boatload of cash and overspend. Forget the $6 mil they spent for this year, going to have to be substantially more imo.

As I was checking out Pearl's track record, I came across the fact that Auburn has 4 transfers this year.

  13. Did something funky happen on the last play of the half? I don't have access to any replays, but it seemed like something, either the half-time clock or the shot-clock, went off with over a second left. Did I imagine that?
