  1. I just hope it's a person with training, skills, and proven success in the field.

I've hired and trained a lot of sales reps.

Give me a trained person with no contacts or name recognition any day, over a recognized name with no proven sales skills.

The first type will outperform the second type every single time, and it's not even close.

I've seen dozens of well-liked popular people try to make it in sales.  They're shocked when things don't go their way.  Then they don't know what to do.  Ultimately, such people fail and blame it on the client or the product, when the real problem was their own lack of skill.

I honestly could not recall (his name) for about five minutes as I started this post, which is crazy considering how invested I was when IU was recruiting him.

I'm the same way with J.R. Konieczny, who went to Notre Dame.  I thought he was perfect tall sniper for IU.  Really wanted him to sign with us.

He averaged 1.6 points per game.

He may end up being great.  We'll see.  He did shoot 5 for 6 from the field for the season, for 83%.

I thought Matt Cross was perfect for IU, too.

Actually, I have a long list of guys I hoped would sign with us, but didn't, and it was for the best.

  3. I often forget that these players are real people, trying to earn a living and provide for their families.  And that's it's very hard.  From an article today:

Dekker admitted that he was in a "really dark place professionally" after being waived by the NBA's Toronto Raptors in November.

"I've had a lot of doubts over the last six, seven years. A lot," Dekker said.

Now age 27, he was selected 18th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft.

He played just one minute in the NBA this season, after returning from two seasons overseas.

Dekker contributed 12 points, five rebounds and an assist in 22 minutes as Bahcesehir College defeated Unahotels Reggio Emilia 90-74 to win the 2021-22 FIBA Europe Cup in Istanbul, Turkey.

Edit:  Good for him.  Sometimes the life we get isn't the life we planned.  And it's harder than we thought it would be.  I don't expect to see him in the NBA again.

  4. A Madison grocery store sells fresh morels in season.  They've been buying from local hunters for 20 years.  Some things I didn't know, from their website:

"In Wisconsin, you can find wild asparagus, onions, leeks, watercress, and the highly sought after morel mushroom!

Initially, the market price starts high, and, as the season progresses, will either hold or drop depending on yields. Last spring produced a bumper crop, and we’re hoping 2022 does as well.

You will find two specimens here: the black morel, and the common, or yellow, morel. Both are hollow, with elongated, conical caps irregularly honeycombed on the outside.

Morels should be firm, not too dry but not too wet. Morels can be stored for a few days with good circulation. Store them in a paper bag, not in plastic."

  5. Here's a nice good-bye piece by Sports Illustrated.

    Highlights:

"If there is a less respected current CEO of any organization, I don’t know who it is."

"(He is) a high-priced meat shield for the NCAA’s army of critics."

"Goodbye to Mark Emmert. Good riddance."

Isn’t this the kid with the questionable motor? Has that changed?

Wondering this myself.  I had a nephew who was just listless and bored for a while in high school.  4.0 grades, but wanted to sleep all the time.  Just a phase he had to grow out of, which he did.  Eventually played sports, had a double major in college, got his Electrical Engineer Masters, is now crushing it in the real world with a full time private sector job plus teaching at his university.

You would not have guessed those high-achiever results during his mid-teen summers.

I don't know Xavier Booker.  I've not even watched video.  Just saying kids can change a lot.  Maybe especially one that's grown to 6' 10".

So do I piss off my good friend's wife for his 50th bday party? Or piss off about a dozen friends here in Indy area who I've watched their kids grow up since birth.

The kids graduation take priority here right?

Find out where the friend's surprise party is, send a stripper, and go to the graduation events.

If the wife gets upset, just tell her to calm down

    That always works.

  9. We can roll our eyes at Pack's $800,000.  But IU would be foolish to not accept the reality, and quickly.

Market prices are being set here, just like any commodity.  I expect they will continue to go up, not down.  I hope IU gets ahead of the curve and leads the way.  Worst case is we overpay.  If we sit and watch, it will be worse.

We can be sure recruits and transfers already feel this way.

Yesterday, I posted an idea to get the top 5 recruits on a visit at the same time and offer them a million dollars each to all sign.

24 hours later, it's clear I underestimated the price by a big margin.

Now I expect some school will try to buy a new "Fab Five" for $25 million, if the players are good enough.

It’d be interesting if someone would make SPY plays based on this and monitored their returns.

During the dot-com era, some guy made headlines when he picked stocks by letting his parakeet poop on the Wall Street Journal stock listings at the bottom of the cage.

He outperformed the market by a big margin.

Here's their S&P 500 forecast for the next 2 years, month by month.

They predict flat to sluggish for the next 12 months, then moving to a 24% gain two years from now, in 2024.

I'm interested to see what others here think of this, and why.  Obviously, anyone who predicts the stock market monthly for the next 2 years is guaranteed to be wrong in details.  The question is will they be close to correct overall, especially the end point?

Looks and sounds like the staff doesn't believe Evans is a lock for Oregon

I get the sense that Woodson and his staff see the value of time.

Wasting days driving or flying someplace to stand in the gym and watch a player who has no chance of coming to IU . . . I don't think they'd do that without considering the cost vs potential reward.

Life is too short, there's too much to do.

Crean, on the other hand, seemed to run around everywhere like a guy who just chugged 10 cans of Red Bull.

  13. A famous Bob Knight recruiting story with Sammy Drummer, a highly rated recruit.  Had him on campus.  Made the pitch.  At the end, Drummer essentially said "what else do I get?"  Meaning money.  That was the end of the visit.

    How times change.

With NIL, now it's the school that's saying "here's what else."

Drummer averaged 20 ppg in college, and was drafted by the NBA, 4th round.
