  1. I just finished reading "The Changing World Order" by Ray Dalio.

A poor title, because it has nothing to do with the similar-sounding New World Order topic (which some call conspiracy theory).  Not related in any way.

Instead, it's about the rise and fall of nations, as studied over the past 500 to 1000 years.

Briefly, he says China is ascending, the US is in decline, and a key tipping point will be if we lose the US dollar as the world's reserve currency.  That, tied with printing money to pay off debts (owed to China, btw), will have consequences.

He's not Doomsday.  He says we still have a terrific future if we make good decisions and act smartly.  He is apolitical.  Not right or left.  Just economics and history, with his interpretations.

I'm not saying he's right.  But it's an interesting read.  I got it at the library.  Not paying $35 for it.  Those are my economics.

  2. Posting this in basketball for discussion, even though this is the Grambling State women's volleyball team.  The new coach of only 3 months had meetings with the entire team and told all of them their scholarships would not be renewed.

Nor would they be allowed to compete for scholarships, as I understand it.  They're off the team, and the new coach will get 14 new players.

A spokesperson for the school said "out with the old, in with the new" and the focus is on winning.

Since we're off season and things are a little slow, I hope the mods allow this to stay under basketball, since it's a topic we discuss so often.

He certainly was...wonder if anyone in the NBA today could match this..

"As an avid track and field athlete, Chamberlain high jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, ran the 440 yards in 49.0 seconds and the 880 yards in 1:58.3, put the shot 53 feet, 4 inches, and long jumped 22 feet."

    I kinda doubt it...

Former Pacer Darnell Hillman cleared 7-feet in the high jump and nearly made the 1968 Olympic team.  But Wilt was amazing, and largely untrained in all those other events.  I doubt Hillman could even lift a shot put, let alone throw it.

Heck.  The last couple were old before they were 'ex'.

I was looking at new tires for my car yesterday (honest).  Hard to decide among all the choices.  The rep said it's easy.  "Cheap new tires are always better than expensive old ones."

First thing I thought was, yeah, that totally applies to marriage.

  5. Had these for decades.  They aren't worth much.  You can find similar ones on eBay.  Thought I'd share anyway.  History or railroad buffs might like them.  Both are pre Civil War.  Top one is Crawfordsville-Logansport, Indiana.  Bottom one is Adrian, Michigan.

I'll change the thread title to just "Antiques" if anyone else wants to post (please do!).  Doesn't have to be fancy or railroad related.  Just whatever's your jam.

Justin Athens, 6'6 sharpshooter from Ohio State enters the portal...

    From NBC:

"Ahrens struggled during much of the 2021-22 season averaging 4.8 points per game despite averaging his most minutes a game as a Buckeye (20.1).

Ohio State Coach Holtmann was relying on Ahrens to be the Buckeyes’ three-point specialist, but he went 45-of-127 from three-point range (35.4%), which was down from his performance last year when he went 55-of-127 (42.5%)."

Is this already being discussed on another thread too?

It is, but everything is now being discussed elsewhere under vague thread titles so you don't know what's going on at a glance.  You're expected to read through several days of posts or risk getting chirped at by someone saying "I beat you to it, I posted that yesterday, don't ever do this again."

But I'm sure if something important happened, like if an IU player got arrested, it would have its own thread.

Seriously...why do we care about a Turdue recruit?

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP COMMENTING ON THIS.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE STOP POSTING PICTURES OF THE TOILET GUY.

Yet another one in today's Jalen Hood-Schifino thread after he commits to IU?

Never understood how this caught on here, or why calling every former coveted recruit a POS is a good look for us.

  9. 15 minutes ago, these two tornadoes sighted in the county, heading towards Madison.  Seem to be weakening.  Should fade out.  But sirens are going right now.  Pic is actual, not an example.

Edit:  they are funnel clouds, not tornadoes.  I got the picture from a local TV station, 2 minutes after it was posted.

Second edit a few hours later:  they totally fizzled out.  Not even any rain.  Had a pretty sunset.  Odd summer up here.

Charlotte sent a 2nd round pick back to Boston to complete the deal, thus creating a 1-year trade exception in for Boston in the amount of Hayward's first year salary with Charlotte ($28M). The exception then has to be used within 12 months.

I run my personal life this way.

Except instead of $28 million, it's a one dollar coupon at the grocery store.

Instead of 12 months, I have to use it in 10 days.

    Otherwise, totally the same.

I don't know if this comedic relief or what....but I have to have the 2 smelliest garbage cans in all of Central Indiana going. Summer heat, weekend of beer/food/leftover sweet corn/rotisserie chicken......I just went to Kroger and bought bleach, dryer sheets, baking soda, cleaning vinegard and dumped all of it in both totes. Good Lord!!

    Had the same problem.

So I put my lawn sprinkler at the end of the driveway, then put the trash bin upside down, directly over it, to completely enclose the spray.

Turned the water on full blast.

Gave the trash bin an interior car wash, so to speak, for 30 minutes.  Totally worked, and now all the neighbors do it at least once a year.

    Very cool stuff, Madison!

Thanks.  All came from my grandfather, who led an interesting life.  Pic below is an African spear and ax, along with the bow.  About a century old.  Used to have several arrows, but they've since been lost.  I don't know how or when.

I do know these were made to be used in real life, not for show.

Aside:  HSN is such a great site.  I don't know anyone else who is interested in things like this.

Haha, yes, it was Mercurochrome in our house.  If we had a tiny scratch, mom would draw little pictures of cats or dogs on the "wound."  We loved it.  They were temporary tattoos.  We would fake cuts to get one.

Then in the summer, we'd eat watermelon on the back porch, and have contests to see who could spit seeds the farthest.

We had no money, and lived like kings.
