You're talking about primarily dealing with 1-2 year players. That's a lot of turnover every year. How many players would you have to get from the transfer portal every year? 4? 5? 6?

I give Lander a pass for last year. To me this is his true freshman year. Lets see what he can do.
I would agree with this. The best way to practice for the next step is to be in the next step. Dominating high school ball for another year probably wouldnt have made any more prepared for college ball. Playing in college for a year prepared him to play college ball, albeit it was not a great system for him. but there was definitely a difference between the beginning and the end of last year with Lander

This is one of the least surprising. Zion's family receiving big benefits is like saying water is wet. 😀
but is water wet? or does it make other things wet? 🤪

It was strategy today. We decided to not take any chance and count on our elite defense to keep them from getting good shots and then count on a mistake allowing us to get some good shots on their less than stellar D.
I would agree with this. Other teams are okay ripping shots 30+ out. IUs has the confidence that they can get better shots by working the the ball closer and into the 18.

😳 off the post!?

Yep....but then again...those are kids you can replace in the portal with an upper classman that will fill a role. Much tough to get top elite talent regardless if in the portal or on the recruiting trail...so I'd rather find a way to bring that in and worry about filling in the rest of the pieces if a kid leaves. Give me talent...I'm sure we can figure it out from there. At least we would be in the conversation for a championship....worrying about not recruiting over 4 year guys will leave you mediocre.
agreed. Im not saying to not recruit over 4 year guys. The hopes is that you can get 4 year guys to fill the roster in case of a "missed" year. The problem is the way the NCAA has constructed this system that the 4 year guys will be a rarity. IU needs to not worry about recruiting over people. Go out and get the best guys you can get. Just a lot of turnover.

Agreed....rather worry about too much talent and keeping it then not having any. With transfers and Indiana HS kids with ties we should always have a core of players that will be loyal and want to play at IU to complement the stars that will be here for a couple years at a time.
The in state Braden Smiths of the world would be ideal to fill out the roster like you mention. The tricky part with the current transfer rules is to get those guys to come and stay all 4 years being continuously recruited over. tough road to navigate.

I’m excited about this class, and could genuinely see if serving as a cultural shift for the program. I know there isn’t any clarity at this point in terms of scholarships, but I have no problem seeing at least 4 high quality players donning the stripes from this class of 22.
these scholarship grids have me all messed up. They should reflect the actual class and put an * next to everyone that has the extra year of eligibility due to covid year.... anyway
I was trying to go through the numbers of who can leave, and who can stay. then i thought everyone could stay, but also everyone could leave... the 5 seniors and TJD are the obvious potential departures.
Point being... recruit on. i like your number of 4
Ideally im thinking 3-4 HS recruits and 1-2 transfers

not as confident as i was prior to the game. coulda used glass yesterday and going forward. team looks poised to make a run squarely on the shoulders of the monster in back at GK.

I really think Crean should be an assistant focusing on offense or a skills trainer. He’s a poor manager, so he can’t sustain a program
Maybe IU hire him under the table... to take a head coaching position at a mid-major, recruit the lesser known players, develop them for two years, and funnel them to IU? obviously just a joke.

I watch this and wish we hired Woodson 13 or 4 years ago. I’d be proud to have my (hypothetical) kids play for him.
get to work. hoepfully CMW is still around in 18 years

This is pretty cool. Shows not only the love the players have for CMW, but to go back to support the Knicks... it shows just of much love CMW has for his players.

That's not what I'm saying at all, but let's not throw away a career of data because of 9 games that seem like an outlier for his career. For his entire career, sans those 9 games, he is a .395% three point shooter on 3.8 attempts per game.
EDIT: Also, I see the confused react you gave to literal facts that he lead his team in minutes last year and was shooting close to 50/40/90 through the end of January. I'm assuming the confused react is because the numbers don't fit your narrative about him. The kid is a flat out shooter.
No i just like your ... he played the most minutes argument lol. Tom Pritchard played the most minutes in 08-09 season.
Without going back through this thread, i have a hunch not 1 single person said Kopp wasnt a good shooter.
You are trying to erase half of the B1G season for Kopp to fit your narrative. I am sure there are A LOT of players i can erase 1/2 the B1G season and make them godsends.
Again I do not believe ANYONE has said they are against this. I think for those who are not creaming their pants about it just think that their could have potentially been someone better. Who knows. I dont. Initial gut reaction was... this ....okaaaaay. Not a jump up and down screaming excitement.

He very well could be - a lot of our fans are so off base on this it's amazing.
He led a Big Ten team in minutes played for a reason. He was shooting close to 50/40/90 through the end of January and then just went into a terrible slump.
Yah, lets just not count 9 out of 20 games within the B1G.

I say this with all respect because I enjoy your posts and think you bring good insight. But aren’t you the one who was saying the board had a bunch of “old guys” who got too negative?
Now for some reason you want to die on this hill of negativity?
Come on, Kopp is a good addition. And the best part is we are no longer a program that’s going to sit around hoping guys get better. We are going to get competition at all times. That’s the way it should be. We’ve gotten way too patient. I’ve said since the day Woody started that I liked the urgency to win every year and not wait for guys to bloom. We’ve wasted way too many years. That may be over now.
lol i might have said that.
But i am not necessarily being negative. I dont hate this move. I just cant help to think there is someone better out there to fill the last spot. Im probably wrong. I was just hoping for a clear cut starter to fill the last spot.
This would be a FANTASTIC get for Archie. With the last month maybe i am spoiled with the results, but i think with what the coaching staff has done thus far, there are bigger fish to fry.
Again i mentioned it twice. The coaching staff hasnt done anything up to this point for me to question them. They know what they want. they know what they are doing.
Just was throwing this out there to ease my concerns and see if anyone else had the same opinion.

One thing about Hunter that I noticed in my (admittedly) limited viewing of games last year: he has a little bit of 'dawg' in him, which I love. He had moments where he would get into people's faces and protect his teammates. I want more of that.
Being comfortable will bring confidence, and I think that's where Hunter has been lacking. He's a bit streaky, and CAM's irregular and self-inflicting substitution patterns did nothing to help Jerome get into a rhythm and play with a cockiness that probably benefits him more than any other player on the roster.
Remove the last 6 games from last year because the whole of IU was poo poo. JH shot 21/51 (41%) from 3. Last 6 he was 4/22

i would be surprised if Kopp played that little.
i'd be surprised if Kopp played that few minutes. he was the 2nd leading scorer on a team that beat us once. he averaged the most minutes played on that team. the guys you mention averaged 6.3, 3.6, and 1.6ppg. they played 19.6, 19.6, and 11.6mpg. i didn't know Hunter came a year early. he didn't did he?
That's fair. I mean i guess im a little eh on this. Kinda like you were with the coaching hire. Thought we could get someone better maybe? Im willing to eat crow on this.
Im fairly confident he reclassified and came a year early to redshirt. I could be wrong.
