That's not what I'm saying at all, but let's not throw away a career of data because of 9 games that seem like an outlier for his career. For his entire career, sans those 9 games, he is a .395% three point shooter on 3.8 attempts per game.

EDIT: Also, I see the confused react you gave to literal facts that he lead his team in minutes last year and was shooting close to 50/40/90 through the end of January. I'm assuming the confused react is because the numbers don't fit your narrative about him. The kid is a flat out shooter.

No i just like your ... he played the most minutes argument lol. Tom Pritchard played the most minutes in 08-09 season.

Without going back through this thread, i have a hunch not 1 single person said Kopp wasnt a good shooter.

You are trying to erase half of the B1G season for Kopp to fit your narrative. I am sure there are A LOT of players i can erase 1/2 the B1G season and make them godsends.

Again I do not believe ANYONE has said they are against this. I think for those who are not creaming their pants about it just think that their could have potentially been someone better. Who knows. I dont. Initial gut reaction was... this ....okaaaaay. Not a jump up and down screaming excitement.

He very well could be - a lot of our fans are so off base on this it's amazing.

He led a Big Ten team in minutes played for a reason. He was shooting close to 50/40/90 through the end of January and then just went into a terrible slump.

Yah, lets just not count 9 out of 20 games within the B1G.

I say this with all respect because I enjoy your posts and think you bring good insight.  But aren’t you the one who was saying the board had a bunch of “old guys” who got too negative?

Now for some reason you want to die on this hill of negativity?

Come on, Kopp is a good addition.  And the best part is we are no longer a program that’s going to sit around hoping guys get better.  We are going to get competition at all times.  That’s the way it should be.  We’ve gotten way too patient.   I’ve said since the day Woody started that I liked the urgency to win every year and not wait for guys to bloom.  We’ve wasted way too many years.  That may be over now.

lol i might have said that.

But i am not necessarily being negative. I dont hate this move. I just cant help to think there is someone better out there to fill the last spot. Im probably wrong. I was just hoping for a clear cut starter to fill the last spot.

This would be a FANTASTIC get for Archie. With the last month maybe i am spoiled with the results, but i think with what the coaching staff has done thus far, there are bigger fish to fry.

Again i mentioned it twice. The coaching staff hasnt done anything up to this point for me to question them. They know what they want. they know what they are doing.

Just was throwing this out there to ease my concerns and see if anyone else had the same opinion.

One thing about Hunter that I noticed in my (admittedly) limited viewing of games last year: he has a little bit of 'dawg' in him, which I love. He had moments where he would get into people's faces and protect his teammates. I want more of that.

Being comfortable will bring confidence, and I think that's where Hunter has been lacking. He's a bit streaky, and CAM's irregular and self-inflicting substitution patterns did nothing to help Jerome get into a rhythm and play with a cockiness that probably benefits him more than any other player on the roster.

Remove the last 6 games from last year because the whole of IU was poo poo. JH shot 21/51 (41%) from 3. Last 6 he was 4/22

i would be surprised if Kopp played that little.

i'd be surprised if Kopp played that few minutes.  he was the 2nd leading scorer on a team that beat us once.  he averaged the most minutes played on that team.  the guys you mention averaged 6.3, 3.6, and 1.6ppg.  they played 19.6, 19.6, and 11.6mpg.  i didn't know Hunter came a year early.  he didn't did he?

That's fair. I mean i guess im a little eh on this. Kinda like you were with the coaching hire. Thought we could get someone better maybe? Im willing to eat crow on this.

Im fairly confident he reclassified and came a year early to redshirt. I could be wrong.

Per 40 mins is irrelevant, as well. It's nothing something that have actually done. It's a projection. I have no use for projections or fake stats. He plays over 30mpg because he was one of their best players. Why wasn't JH one of our best players on a BAD team last year?

How about player efficiency rating then (PER)?

Kopp: 10.8 last year 11.3 career

Hunter: 12.8 laster year 10.8 career

Kopp has 8 career games over 20p and 39 games in double figures including 14 of 15 in his SO year. Hunter 0 career games over 20p and 7 games in double figures.

It's pretty clear why we were interested in bringing in another "shooter" and another guy that can play the 4.

Thats apples and oranges. A starter and the 2/3 scoring option plays over 30 minutes a game. to a role player that plays less than 20.

Per 40 minute stats via sports reference:

    Kopp: 14.3 pts 1.4 assists 3.9 rebounds

    Hunter 12.8 pts 1.0 assists 6.0 rebounds

I listened to Assembly Call last night; they thought that JH has the higher ceiling, but the problem is that JH is really streaky; at times he makes bad plays and has defensive lapses. When this happens we now have Kopp to sub in. Plus, Kopp was asked to do a lot last year and the belief is that he’ll be much more efficient this year on offense.

Kopp is a good team defender by the numbers. Last year he was a plus defender, primarily defending the 4. I do agree that he will need to rebound better.

Kopp is going to get minutes next year though. He’s too good, too smart and too experienced not to. It surprises me that you can’t see him fitting in next year because I felt like we’ve been missing a player of his size and skill since Watford. *Not comparing him directly to CWat*. Let’s just say playing the hot hand between JH + Kopp = a ‘CWat-like contribution.’

Where have you heard that roster isn’t done shuffling around? Not saying it isn’t possible, but I haven’t seen any rumors about this. And if that’s the case then oh well, we severely needed to upgrade the talent. We finally have a roster that can compete in this conference on a nightly basis and practices are going to be fierce.

It has been mentioned on boards and a podcast. Cant remember which podcast.

Miller Kopp was one of the best players on a Big Ten team the past few seasons. The notion that he isn't better than those three is frankly very silly.

And I'm a big fan of all three of those guys, but it just isn't even a comparison right now.

This is the third time someone is arguing a point that i never made. I never said that leal or galloway were better than Kopp. and i said overall Kopp was probably a lateral move for Hunter if you we were to compare them at the 4.

I dont want to give up leal or galloway for someone who has 2 less years of eligibility that is going to come in as a role player. I guess i dont know everyone else's expectations. I see Kopp playing +/- 10 minutes a game averaging 6 points.

I guess i have a little more sentiment for Hunter than others do. For someone who came in a year early to red shirt, then get hurt. on the bench for 2+ seasons before seeing the court and gutting it out in an IU uniform.

To say Kopp has been one of the best B1G players last few seasons? I dont recall seeing his name on the award lists. not first team. not second team. not third team. not even honorable mention. according to the media and coaches of the B1G Kopp isnt even a top 25 player in the B1G.

Scoring not even close. He has had many big games.Upgrade definitely!!

Sorry. I was unaware I mentioned scoring. Kopp was a starter and 2/3 scoring option. Averaged double the shot attempts with 3% worse for fg % last year.
Kopp per was 12.4 last year

JH per was 11.0 last year

the issue isnt the scoring. The issue is rebounding and defense. Which I would say JH is better at at least playing the 4 spot.

my issue isn’t that we got Kopp. I’m not sure where he’ll fit in. The coaching staff does and that’s great. The word is IU isn’t done shuffling around yet. So who’s on the outs for the next incoming. Leal? Galloway? Hunter? Is Kopp worth losing one of those guys or someone else? I don’t know. let’s see how it plays out and make judgements then. It’s not December 23rd, but I just wanted to air my grievances. More of an open concern at the moment.

I think more than concentrating on height; we should be be focusing on the ability to rebound. OSU was undersized but they were physical and Sueing and Liddell were pretty good rebounders.

If we want Jerome or Kopp playing along side Trayce in the 4 position then they need to show that they can crash the boards. If they can't, then we'll seeing a lot of the Race and Trayce show, IMO..... especially in B1G play.

I don't think this is necessarily an 'old school' way of thinking. It's just covering an area we can be potentially be exposed.

This is precisely my point. and dont forget defense. Great Kopp can shoot. Awesome. But TJD with Kopp at the 4 rebounding and defense will be an issue. We will see how it plays out, but i would hate to think that Kopp's commitment forces someone out. I would say Kopp is a lateral move from JH overall. I was hoping for a outright starter not a role player, especially if it forces someone out. But F me for having an opinion.

Hunter has not been very good at playing basketball at Indiana, at all. Kopp has over 3 times as many career points scored. I guess I don't understand how someone that avged 13p 4r and shot 39% from 3 and is 6'7 could be a bad thing?

He’s had good spurts. I don’t think you can compare career stats of Kopp and JH.
didn’t really say it was a bad thing. We will see what happens. But what I said is I don’t want to force someone to move on and add Kopp who will be a role player. Kopp and TJD on the court at the same time will help offensively, but defensively we are in trouble.

    TJD is our FIVE.

Understand that? We aren’t getting a starting five.

Four out and one in means what to you? It means your four must be able to shoot. Gonzaga and Baylor started a 6’7” and 6’5” at the four last year.  Just 🛑

Holy s*** Batman. You are absolutely correct. That 🛑 .... you got me there. how could I possibly have my own opinion now.
maybe reread my post for comprehension

  14. Definitely dont love it. Dont even know if i like it. I think Hunter could do a better job than what Kopp is offering overall. Seems like a step in the wrong direction, albeit a very very small step. i would have rather seen a starter and not a role player fill the spot if in fact someone is/has to move on. More so an actually big man that can step out. Kopp is a tweener, not quite fits the bill of a 4.

However, in the coaching staff i trust. They havent done anything to this point for me to question.

Your last sentence is spot on. We'll see how things shake out on playing time, minutes, incoming transfers.....probably an outgoing transfer will happen but we've changed this roster over along with style of play in less than a month. Couldn't be happier to see the momentum created inside this program within 30 days.

who do you see as the outgoing transfer?

definitely possible.  kinda like i said when people were so big on Leal, Galloway, Lander, and Geronimo.  i like those guys and hope they pan out, but we got awful excited when they did anything good because we were a little desperate to look at something positive!

Maybe a little of that, but i think its much more to do with the fact they are freshman and seem to have potential. I dont think people would have gotten excited if they were seniors.
