  1. I don't doubt that there are studies that cast doubt on the effectiveness of masks, but not that they will "make matters worse" in regards to COVID19. To make things more confusing, a lot of studies focus on using a mask for self-protection, not transmission prevention; and were completed before COVID19 was even a thing. I don't' believe there are any completed studies that actually test masks with COVID19. I was listening to a podcast that summarized many of these studies and there were a whole bunch of factors they are concentrating on: different types of masks, how well they filter a virus, etc., but none disputed the fact that masks decrease the projectile of airborne droplets, which is this virus's preferred method of transmission. But if you are concerned about contamination via touch, I think I'd rather have an asymptomatic person touch their face mask and then test the ripeness of an avocado that I ultimately pick out, rather than coughing directly on the avocado. (a completely unscientific assumption on my part 😀)
  2. I'm still astonished that people still act as if they're being "brave" for not wearing a mask. It's not about being protected, it's about protecting others incase you have it and are asymptomatic. Nobody wants death. Everybody wants to get back to work and get the economy going. My friend was baaaahh'd at (as in sheep) the other day in Target clearly by people who don't understand this premise. Ironically, my friend was wearing a mask as a courtesy to the people baaahing at her. WTF is wrong with people right now? It's simple math. Wearing a mask decreases R or the reproductive rate. If R is lower, it decreases the severity or the chances of another wave from happening. Even if you don't believe a second wave is coming, or the numbers are overstated, or the virus 'isn't that bad', wouldn't it be smart to wear one in public places......just in case you're wrong? Because if the cases go up and we flirt with our ICU bed capacity again, it's not us who will be be deciding to issue another lock down; it will be the government and out of our control. How about we don't give them a reason to contemplate this scenario by being cautious and looking out for each other? The risk reward is in our favor on this one because there is no risk for wearing a mask (other than being a little irritated behind the ears)...it's pure reward!
  3. I just gave up trying to get yellow road paint off the side of my car. Clay bar, WD40, Goo Gone with a credit card scraper......didn't do crap. All the videos on YouTube made it more confusing because you have to filter through the idiots telling you to put god knows what on your paint. Anybody ever done this successfully? Either way, the detailing shop said they'll get it off for $50. Good enough for me.
  4. I have. Usually wrap meat side down with apple juice, vinegar, brown sugar and butter. I mentioned above that I’ve come around back to just 5-6 hours on grill because I like a little bite on them rather than completely falling off the bone. Also, something that I learned last year is that 3.2.1 isn’t for all ribs. Spare ribs are 3.2.1 and baby backs are 2.2.1. If anybody is interested, there’s a Facebook group that I’d recommend joining called BBQ Pitmasters Secrets. A lot of cool techniques and tips are shared by posters who range from casual smokers to chefs and restaurant owners. They’ll get into endless arguments about stuff like putting the fat side up or down on pork butts, but a good follow none the less. edit: @mrflynn03 the 1 in 3.2.1. isn’t for rest, it’s for saucing. You put back on the grill at low temp with sauce. Even if you don’t want sauce, you’ll need to dry them out a bit after the wrap.
  5. For any Margarita fans, I actually found a really good mix available in stores: Owl’s Brew. Best store bought mix I’ve come across. Has a bit of habanero with a nice kick. A bit pricey too at $9 for 16 oz, but well worth it...not too sweet, not too sour...just well balanced.
  6. Recipe got me at ‘cilantro’. Gonna try this.
  7. Ha. Definitely not a ‘native’ Hawaiian specialty. When in Hawaii it’s poke bowls and fish tacos for me. ....But back to grilling. Looking forward to having smoked baby backs tomorrow...weather permitting. I’ve tried a whole bunch of different ways, but smoking @ 215 for 5-6 hours with a spritz of apple juice every hour works best for me. (I just rub with mustard and some Famous Daves Rub.)
  8. My in-laws live in northeast Indiana and every summer we drive 30 minutes to this place called Mister Bratz in Orland to load up on Hawaiian brats. They are brats with pineapple in them - absolutely amazing. The trick is cooking them long over low heat because if they burst a lot of the flavor is lost. So if you ever happen to be in Bumble-F, Indiana....definitely hit that place up. They have a whole bunch of flavors, but the Hawaiian is our favorite.
  9. I didn’t know Naperville closed. Did you ever try that Hot As A Mutha app there? It was something like jalapeño cream cheese stuffed in a fried jabenero. I had the littlest bit and was sweating for 30 minutes. Hottest thing I’ve ever had.
  10. Anybody know if Naturdays is coming out again this summer? That was definitely a guilty pleasure last summer.
  11. Love me some jambalaya. I have 2 recipients that are completely different that are even better with really good andouille. Would like to venture into making some gumbo. I have yet to find a gumbo I didn’t like and haven’t even been to New Orleans! My favorite gumbo is at Heaven on Seven in Chicago.
  12. Hope it’s just a little bug and not thee bug. When do you get results? hang in there Flynn.
  13. Can I say how much that I love the food sample stations are not there anymore and that senior citizens have a designated time to go in the morning? haha. (No offense to any seniors on the board...I just always tend to be in a hurry). It literally shaves 10 minutes off my trip. oh, and: 🙌 $20 Kirkland Tequila 🙌
  14. I wouldn't mind visiting that guy at his home to sit naked on his leather couch after mowing the lawn on a 100 degree day. When he kicks me out I just want to scream in his face that it's my right to be able to sit down. I've been saying that if any type of mask regulation is going to be implemented it's going to have to come from the private industry.
  15. Great post. I was also reading that this hyper-reactive immune response doesn’t typically happen in children because their immune system hasn’t evolved to that level. I read this a few weeks ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think it was prhased that a child’s immune system is still ‘learning’. This is ironically the reason why some doctors think they are relatively safe from the virus. I hear you on sugar. I still have my challenges, but greatly reduced it over the years. It’s crazy to actually sit down and look at how much added sugar you consume in a single day. Especially if you are a pop drinker. My friend is a dietician who specializes in weight loss, she says the very first thing she’s tells people to do is cut out the added sugar because it affects your body in so many ways. Every now and then I slowly fall off the bandwagon, but for me, when my sugar intake is low I sleep better, my knees feel better (sugar causes inflammation), my blood pressure is lower, my workouts are better and I don’t get sick as much (and if I do the duration isn’t as long). I mentioned this a couple of pages back and I don’t mean to beat it like a dead horse, but it kinda upsets me that there isn’t a bigger call for improving our health, especially in this moment. The media is so good at scaring people on a whole host of issues large or small, why don’t they attempt to ‘scare’ people into eating healthy? haha. The message everywhere is wash your hands, be careful and wear a mask, which is great. But why can’t they add ‘eat healthy’ or ‘excercise’ to that list? Other than age, the people who are most at risk have health issues. Health issue are usually a result of bad eating habits. You can greatly improve your health in the span of 2 months and as a result lower you risk, no matter where your starting point is.
  16. Definitely agree. You couldn’t have a shut down like in Wuhan here in the US because of the culture. Populated cities are different than rural areas. But the Demographics I referenced abouve about and the cultural differences are all just a drop in the pond in what we truly know. I’m also really curious if we eventually find out that some sort of genetic disposition makes people more vulnerable than others.
  17. What about stouts? I love them but they sure don’t love me. I’ve had countless stouts, but always come back to a good ole Breakfast Stout. As for Barrel Aged stouts, that’s a worm hole you don’t want to go down if you don’t like to spend money. I used to hunt these down, but just can’t anymore. Ever since I turned about 35, if I drink more than one I’ll wake up in the morning feeling like a train hit me - there’s just so much sugar in those things and the hangovers are fierce. I still love them though; I just usually have to split them with my wife or neighbors. Of course, Bourbon County is high up on my list - and any variants I can get my hands on, but I also love Firestone Prarabola and Big Bad Baptist. Never have been a fan of Darklord; I think it’s just way too sweet and can’t understand all the hype around it.
  18. Always hunt down a Pliny when I’m in Cali.
  19. For sure. If I were to guess, I’d think they take vitamin D to supplement for the lack of sunlight. I there’s a lot of talk about the virus getting weaker in the summer, which I’m not sure is the correct way to put it. Because of the sunlight and Vitamin D, I think that our immune systems get stronger in the summer. Which is why I’m hoping that we’ll see a lull in R (reproductive rate) these next couple of months. It is funny that you mention Vitamin D though considering how tied it is to a healthy immune system. But there are other things that we can easily do and will help strengthen our immune system. I don’t understand why there isn’t a greater call to get healthy, especially in this moment. Things like sleep well, try to keep your stress level down, eat healthy, lessen your sugar intake, etc. All of these are proven to help people ward off viruses or lessen their severity. I know everybody is waiting for a vaccine or magical cure, but there are things that we can do to help ourselves and decrease our risk for an ICU visit while we have all this extra time on our hands.
  20. Every time Stone comes out with their Enjoy By beers, I need to get them. Great Brewery. My ‘go to’ IPA though is Two Hearted.
  21. I’ve heard of Other Half. Jealous you’re so close.
  22. Interesting article: Sweden’s outbreak has been far deadlier than those of its neighbors, but it’s still better off than many countries that enforced strict lockdowns. I had a conversation yesterday and we’re talking about how so much is still unknown about this virus. Like how UK and Sweden decided to forego lock downs, yet, UK got slammed and Sweden didn’t? In Sweden, almost 30 percent more people died during the epidemic than is normal during this time of year, an increase similar to that of the United States. But as we all know, they did this without a lock down. Anyway, this article dives into a few comparisons/differences with Sweden and other countries. There’s definitely still a lot more that needs to be studied. I did find it interesting that 56% of their households are single person households. And obviously, the fewer percentage of obese people are helping their numbers, but you’d think an older population would work against them. This whole thing is puzzling.
  23. I'm not sure how things are now, but when this started my Mother in Law is the nursing manager at a nursing home and she said that patients were carelessly being transferred between homes. She was very frustrated because there were very few protocols set-up. Considering how many deaths take place in nursing homes, you'd think there should be a quarantining period before anybody is admitted into a nursing home.
