I'd recommend listening before making that statement. Not that you are wrong, but I think the answer is somewhere in the middle and he explains why. Like all things in life, you need to listen to both sides' perspective before making a conclusion.

He does go off on an interesting tangent about Wisconsin. Basically, that they are coached not to make stupid reaching fouls and don't go over the back. He claims that the officials know the fouling discrepancy (which is always in WI's favor) and feel tons of pressure from the crowd, players and coaches to even it up.

Was there any discussion on the over the top antics of some of the coaches.

The coaches should work around the officiating and not the other way around. Blaming the coaches is a copout and shows why the B1G officiating sucks and won't change any time soon.

Officials should not be effected by the crowd, coaches or players.  They should call the game based on how the game is being played.  Stop letting momentum affect how they are calling the game.   Tell coaches to shut their traps, call technical when they warrant and uphold the rules.  They are the gate keepers, not the coaches or the crowd.  If they call a  fair game every game, i don't think you're going to see to much clapback from fans or coaches

I would listen but it requires installing iTunes to do so. Not going to happen.

The coaches get paid millions of dollars to take the necessary steps to win. That includes teaching their players how to play without fouling. You better believe that they (at least the good ones) scout not only their opponents but the officials to know what they can and can't get away with. If the officials call the games how they would be called in the tournament, the coaches and teams will adapt to that. Sure, it might take a few ugly games with lots of fouls and/or coaches getting kicked out but they would adapt.

Yep, they're supposed to be impartial judges. They're human so some of those things might affect them a bit but it shouldn't affect them as much as it does. Letting the crowd affect them is not being impartial so he basically admits that they're not doing their jobs correctly.

Oh yeah.

He was talking about the theatrics and that it's ridiculous. He contributes temperment to the success of NBA guys like Donovan and Stevens because college coach theatrics don't fly in the NBA. They're coaching millionaires on the bench - you can't look like a child.

I know people have been asking for Woodson to go crazy on the bench, but Woody is a product of the professionalism of the NBA. I just don't think that's what we'll be seeing out of him.

While correct, its also a tool he is not using.  That other coaches are and will affect the game.  The staredown doesn't do anything.  Now i am not saying he should go FranCon8 or anything, but getting a technical isn't going to hurt anything in the right situation.

It doesn't require iTunes:

I use Podcast Addict app on my Android phone, you just need an RSS feed to subscribe.

He blames the coaching in the B1G.

Coaches don’t call fouls.  Call the fouls and when a few coaches have seven players sitting beside them who have fouled out, they’ll be forced to coach differently.  And T up the coaches who want to whine and bitch about it.

I said after our game vs Nebraska that they were going to be tough out there. Does Ohio St have injuries or just hitting a bad stretch?

Key has been battling a bad shoulder, missed the MD game. They seem to be in a shooting slump and as their defense has not been good at all this year, that's a tough combo.

He doesn't/shouldn't need to. Woodson "handles" the officials fine. He is plenty critical.

Jeez guys.

I'm not debating or defending. I'm offering a perspective from a side we don't hear from, in the form of a podcast interview.

A perspective that we don't hear from inside our little fan bubble.

My opinion is that there ARE problems with the officiating and they need to be corrected. But the solutions many are offering on here are surface level solutions. The issue is way deeper - he explains why in the interview. You can agree or disagree with his explanations. Or don't listen. I don't care. That said, some of the answers/explanations you are seeking may get addressed.

I'd like to think the NCAATC would take a hard look at our record when healthy vs not. Just a reminder which may or may not work in our favor but Chris Reynolds is the Tourney Committee Chair this year. He of all people should know how deep the conference is.

I will say this though. With our recent conference champs flailing out in 2nd round maybe the committee might be getting tired of just putting 9 Big 10 teams in each year.

Health used to matter, and I thought it still matters but haven't seen it confirmed.

If X and Race get back, and it results in us playing better, then we are going to get the benefit of the doubt for the losses that happened with them out IMO. A 9-11 finish in conference where we went 4-2 in the games those two played and then won a BTT tournament game is not going to be looked at the same last last year-s 9-11. Factor in the wins over X and UNC with those two being healthy and we'll get in no problem IMO.

I hope we're still talking brackets here.  :coffee:

I committed to meeting up with buddies this year in Vegas for the opening rounds of the NCAAT, right before the Iowa game. First half of the first half I was feeling sooo good... not sweating by any means, but my palms are clammy.

Fingers crossed we finish the season strong. I can't think of a more miserable time and place than being there if IU is out.

You'll have fun no matter what. We did that trip every March starting around 1997-2004 or so and just like with anything that's awesome word got out and it became a zoo. Literally had to draw straws to see who was going down to book at 5 or 6 in the morning to save seats.

My suggestion is find a casino that has a 1 flat fee cost of admission room. We found a deal at Harrah's and I'll never forget watching hoops with about 500 other people while also watching our military drop missile after missile looking for Saddam.

While I agree getting a tech isn't bad, I think he actually has done plenty to warrant techs at any other level of basketball. It's just so ridiculous what college coaches get away with.

I partially put that on the officiating, but also on the conferences. Start suspending Izzo and Fran when they act like 2 year olds who need a timeout and they may stop....

I was at the first round games in the RCA Dome when all if those bombings were going off. At halftime and between games everyone was going out and watching the news.

I don’t think anyone was arguing with you.  I know I wasn’t.  I was stating that the particular point made in the podcast that coaches are to blame for officials not calling fouls is ridiculous.  I don’t think it’s a really deep issue.  Fouls are called on Big 10 teams in the NCAA Tournament, so they can be called in conference play.

I just bought my tickets to Des Moines 1st and 2nd rounds.  This is my 3rd year going.  So much fun.  Got to watch IU beat Kentucky.  So much fun lol
