HoosierFaithful
And from how poorly we started, that must mean we have been top 75 or even top 50 for the last handful of games.
KoB2011
We have a pretty good shooting team. We have 4 or so guys that can absolutely kill a team from deep.

But have a few that can kill us just as fast. Lander needs to learn not to get baited into shooting 3's. He needs to be able to hit them and make teams pay for backing off, but he aint there yet. Jordan needs to be able to step out and be a threat to hit a couple more consistantly to help spread the floor when we play teams with a bunch of trees in the paint. Trey, well, kind of along the same lines as Jordan needs to be able to hit a couple on kick outs to keep defenses honest. Is there anyway to combine him and Leal to form a "Super Hoosier"?? 🤔🤷♂️ Whats great to see now is (except for the 2nd half last night, 9pm games suck) these guys arent taking those shots now unless they HAVE to. OLDIUFAN
You see teams playing for Galloway out let pass instead of him shooting! He really needs to shot some of those 8 , 10 footers
NotIThatLives
It's funny because in other threads we have had posters such as @Hoosierhoopster and @BGleas making the argument the wrong guys were taking the 3 point shots. In this thread, a few are advocating that the wrong guys take more shots.
Euroclydon
Definitely improving of late but I'll go along with Hoosierhoopster and BGleas. There are still too many threes being taken by guys that have not been able to consistently hit them. Worse still - some of them find a way to take them at the least opportune times. Smart teams work to get good shots by the right guys in the right spots. That's not always the case with this team. Armaan, Al, Jerome, and Leal (on a very small scale) have shown they can knock down open threes. Everyone else should only be taking them when there is no other option and based on the score and the clock. If we say they have to take them to get better what we are really saying is we can't run the offense well enough to get a better shot option. Geronimo, Race an Trey are a combined 10 of 45 (22%) from three. The only time they should shoot a three is when the game is in hand or the clock is running out. Lander could be in that group at 11 for 38 (29%) but it's clear he is limited to shooting threes right now. As quick as he is there is no evidence he has the physical strength to get to the rim and be a factor. Rob is right there too at 30%. The thing with Rob is he can be so clutch at times. Still prefer he get to the lane and create for others. It is encouraging to think they at least have the potential to hit enough threes to be dangerous and of late we are seeing more consistency. But we have been in this spot before. Just when they appear to turn the corner things go off the rails. Al was sharp last night but he can turn in 2 points against Northwestern, 4 against Purdue, 8 against Rutgers and 7 against OSU. Armaan has been strong more often than not but 2 points against Maryland, 4 against Iowa, and 3 against OSU show he is not a lock. Rob? In nine of 21 games he has scored five points or less (including a goose egg against IL). Bottom line - I want to believe they are getting better shooting the three, and it seems to be getting better, but it would not surprise me if they show up Saturday and can't hit the broad side of a barn. 5fouls
I am a firm believer that guys who can't consistently make the shot should not be taking it. Race, Trey, and Jordan fall into that category. It plays into the hands of the defense. Not only is it likely they will miss, but by consistently having someone like Race step out to the three point line, it allows the defense to play 5 on 4 at the other positions on the floor. In other words, having Race at the top of the key is not going to free up TJD underneath. I also noticed by the numbers @IUFLAposted that, while our 3 point shooting has improved, our overall field goal shooting has declined. This adds evidence to our perception that we have been missing a lot of bunnies lately. .

I'm with you. Our guards seem to shoot with more confidence. At least, I didn't see hesitation when guards were shooting wide open shots. It's definitely coaching. Maybe our guards can now differentiate 'taking good shots' vs 'taking wide open shots with confidence'. I believe all of our guards were at least decent 3-point shooters in high schools if not sharpshooters. So they could always shoot; they might've just needed encouragement. I think our guards tried to find the best shot in every possession, which made them second guess even when they were wide open.

Its possible that its wrong. I didn't look for multiple sources. I went with the first one i saw that was from the NCAA. Here are a couple other quick searches that came up with different numbers. Looks like there are different sets of criteria to use. I don't plan to dig any deeper than what i have so far so take from it whatever you wish. I didn't create the sites or the stats, i just did some google searching because i was interested mostly at where we were ranked from how many we shot but stumbled upon our percentage. I agree that you have to be a 35%+ 3 point shooting team in todays basketball era if you want to compete at a high level. I find it interesting that we don't shoot that many when we shoot above average. It would also be interesting to see if we shoot better at home or on the road from 3? It feels we shoot better from 3 against better competition also that would also be interesting to see. I just don't have the time, smarts or motivation to go and actually pull that information myself. On a purely numbers stance, the increase in 3 point shooting % while decreasing in 2 point shooing % is concerning, since we don't typically shoot that many 3s in a game. I would think that the number should move in an upward trend in concert. You would expect the uptick in 3s made to open up the dribble drive and pick and pop feed to the post resulting in easier more high quality shots.
