If staff drove someone would be complaining about the wasted time when they should be working?🤷🏼♂️
oh my bad, didn't realize commenting about choice of travel was off limits.

It's not even doable in a day.
was the contact period only today?
Just thought it was odd to be flying around in-state but whatever. Hopefully it helps and 2025 bears more fruit than 2024.

There just happened to be a flight from Bloomington to Laporte this morning 🙂
So they're probably not driving
no wonder our recruiting budget dwarfs everyone else's budget. Can't even drive for in-state visits lol

We can play the back and forth all you want. I'll throw up something and you'll hit it back with something that is clearly just designed to be anti-Woodson.
Is Woodson not responsible?
He could easily say the same about pro-woodson people that are working hard to give him a pass.

I could see it in spots, especially when you need to draw defenders out of the land, but I sure wouldn't want to start a Kopp/Goode at the 4 in the Big Ten. I could see on occasion, running two wings and two guards and keeping someone like Ballo back under the rim. That would certainly provide a nice change of pace and make some space for shooters.
If Goode is strictly a 3, then wonder if MM will end up slotting at the 4 some. Then you also have Tucker but he could probably fill in at a few positions.
I'm hoping our backup 4 does open things up with outside shooting regardless of whether he is called a wing or big.

Nobody is saying it needs to be. But everyone acts as if they knew Gunn and Banks couldn't hack it at this point last year, when that simply isn't the case.
If Woodson cuts them, then they transfer and turn out to be serviceable if not good players, then he gets the "He can't evaluate talent, look, he let those two go and they turned out to be good" response.
I just said they were unproven and they were unproven.
We had XJ, who had played just 11 games the season before, Galloway and a bunch of players that hadn't played much at all or not at all.
We also had an open scholarship.
I think the opinion that Woodson should have brought in better competition at the guard spot is valid and foreseeable prior to the season starting.

I think Cupps was a backup to XJ and Galloway at the point, with hopes that Gunn would develop and get time at the 2, and Leal picking up spot minutes...
The point has been made by @Zlinedavid that you have to give kids, especially sophomores, a shot to develop and earn playing time...And that's true...
They still have a shot to earn playing time but there should have been more competition.
This isn't a casual church league. You play to win, not to make sure everyone gets a shot.

Up until he broke his foot against Kansas, XJ had played in every game (118) at Pitt and IU and started 115 of them...That's injury prone?
And if you remember, there was talk of him coming back at the end of 20-23...so he was pretty much healed, then had a whole off season to recover as well...
And every team has unknowns/unproven backups...That's where you hope kids develop
Maybe not injury prone but he played in 11 games in 22/23. You think relying on him and a freshman PG as backup was a good idea?

Hindsight is always 20/20...
His job WASN'T on the line though...He was trying to get kids to develop and contribute...
It doesn't always work out...
It isn't hindsight when people were pointing out our guard deficiency before the season even started and then were proven correct.
Why should his job have to be on the line in order to put the best product on the floor or best depth?

If you remember, Joey Hart was a name to know at one time...Does anybody really think he would have made much of a difference last season?
Naming players that didn't work out doesn't really prove the point you think it does.

Sometimes you gotta trust to get the results you want...
I don't think Woodson was guilty of anything other than giving Gunn and Banks a chance to earn their spots...
Woodson wasn't to blame for going into the season with an injury prone PG, Galloway and a bunch of unknowns/unproven backups?
Yea, I don't agree with that one bit.

It works both ways. Just because we want another guard doesn't mean there is one interested in coming. 2 Gabe Cupps would not have helped this team last year.
So let me get this straight. you would sign a guy fully knowing you are going to kick him out the door next year? so really you are using a scholarship for a single year for someone that will not get a single minute of playing time... just to say you used the scholarship?
I already said they could make some money via NIL.
Just because you have a scholarship available doesn't mean you walk to the rec center and offer a kid that made 10 free throws in a row. There still needs to be a baseline level of talent/potential. You don't just use it to use it.
No, I would fill the scholarship with a project that I would hope develops and worst case scenario be a good player to practice against for a year.
If he doesn't develop and we need the scholarship the next year, then yea, it would be a 1 year rental. But someone in that position would do it for the chance to prove themselves.

I bet their is no other fan base that worries more about who the 13th scholarship player will be on our team. A lot of programs don't ever use the 13 scholarships but our fans goes ballistic if we don't use it.
Do you have a link to those stats with percentage of schools that don't use all 13 scholarships? I would have guessed most schools use all of them.
I don't recall very many years where IU went through a season with an open scholarship but don't follow other schools to know if that's normal.

Yes, BUT...I'm 100% fine with holding it for the guys going through the draft process. No rush to fill the last one now.
No issue with being patient with it.
28 minutes ago, 13th&Jackson said:I checked the stats and Empty Chair had zero turnovers last year.
And yet empty chair is unable to enter the game as needed. Last scholarship player is unlikely to see much court time anyway but better to have and not need than need and not have.

Over an empty chair, sure.

It's gotta be with someone that has some semblance of talent or potential. I dont want to go offer the last scholarship(s) just to use them. I think it will be difficult to fill up the last scholarships... assuming Goode is onboard. The only thing to offer now is a bit of money and maybe 10-15 minutes at the 4-5?
Never know how injuries will play out or how all the newcomers will do.
Everyone on this board likely wished we had another guard on this team last season instead of an empty seat.

we don't need to to keep an open scholarship. pick up a sleeper to take a shot on if nothing else.

So is Goode a higher priority over Anderson?
Goode: 5.7 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 0.6 APG, 39.7 FG%, 38.9 3FG%
Anderson: 12.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.9 APG, 48.2 FG%, 45.9 3FG%
Of course, Goode is playing against tougher competition, at least in conference.

If that’s the only explanation, that’d make me nervous. Freshman get better. But his Ortg was 91.7, which would’ve been better than CJ Gunn but worse than XJ last year. I’d have to think there’s a better explanation than that.
His percentages were much higher when taking good set/open shots.
He doesn't need to be taught how to shoot. He needs to be better at deciding when to shoot. The latter is much easier to fix.

Now our starting unit is in intact I think we finish up with a backup 4 and 5. I know people will say we still need shooters but I think guys like Rice and Carlyle will take a step up next year. Hopefully Galloway can get back to where he was his junior year. I think he was asked to do touch last year and it caused his shooting percentage to go down. Also MM is a very good shooter who will only get better.
PG- Rice/Galloway/Cupps
2G- Carlyle/Newton
SF- MM/Tucker/Leal
PF- Reneau/?
C- Ballo/?
Unless someone is missing above, we have 3 left.
I would bet 2 backup bigs and a guard. The backup PF and guard will likely be good outside shooters
