There is a real chance Calipari becomes available. It would be malpractice not to pursue him.

Calimari is an average coach that used to be able to have a major advantage by buying players before NIL was a thing.

Now that everyone is openly buying players, he lost his advantage.

If we want the one coach that can do less than Woodson with more talent, then cal is the guy.

Personally I would rather someone get more out of the team than the sum of their parts.

Even though Ware had a slightly higher average, Malik was probably our best option when we really needed a bucket, so why throw it out to a guard who was likely going to miss. If we get a couple of elite guards who are knock down shooters, then I think he’ll be a willing passer when he’s double teamed. And if they’re really good, he won’t be doubled team as often.

Because if you threw it out enough to the guards and they actually were a threat, then opposing teams would be less likely to double team in the first place.

You will never have a good offense overall playing 2 or 3 on 5

Does he play through too many double teams, probably. However, he shot 56%, so he finished a lot of those. He was second on the team in total assists, and was basically tied with a 6th year PG for assists/game. He was smart for mostly passing to Ware, who is an excellent finisher. Who else do you pass too? Mgbako, Cupps and Gunn, on the season shot under 40% overall. Ware and Reneau shot a higher % from three than Mgbako and Gallo. Ware and Reneau both attempted more threes than Cupps, who was afraid to shoot.

His big thing is staying out of foul trouble and getting better rebounding position.

You are bound to get more assists when you get the ball on most plays.    Still way too many times where he would force the issue, get fouled and then go 1 of 2 from the line.  Those misses don't count against his fg% due to the foul.  Turning it over also doesn't count against his FG%

I'm not saying he was bad on offense and part of it is also Woodson's crappy offense system that feeds the post while having the outside players sitting around doing nothing to get themselves open.

Can't believe anyone would think Reneau coming back is a bad thing. If he improves as much this off season than he did last off season he will be an all big ten player.

The only bad thing is it requires us to have 2 post players since he can't rebound or protect the rim very well.   And most of us are well over watching buddy ball in the post.

MR is a good player on offense but somewhat of a black hole.  Hopefully he works on his free throws, rebounding and ability to defend without fouling.

so i posted in the transfer portal thread about the top guys according to 247.  why do i not see those names on here?  we already know where they are going?  i just figured we have this huge amount of money and assurance that Woodson will have all the resources to bring in a new team, so we should be in on Garrison, McDaniel, Porter, etc.  right?

We are waiting for their moms to contact woodson.

PS. We should be sending mgbako's mom a cake for thinking of us or we may have had a losing season this year.

This is from another boards insider. Take it however you want-I’m not saying it’s true or accurate.

First thing's first, congrats to the IU women on the 4-seed and hosting opportunity. Tough draw, but they call it madness for a reason. Secondly, love you guys and this community, but goodness you're not shy about using the private message feature. Sorry for ghosting many of you but easier to just post publicly.

And, now that I've effectively buried the lead, Woodson is back next year with a couple caveats and interesting details:

    - Meeting Tuesday happened as scheduled and talk was future of the basketball program and specifically how Woody fits in that plan

    - Though Dolson and BoT disagree about it happening now, consensus was that this isn't the bridge hire they'd hoped for and this is his last year barring some miracle B1G championship or FF run next year that would make for bad optics.

    - Woodson was given the opportunity to retire and go out amicably but said no and that he thinks he can use the portal to put us in a better position to transition to another coach after next year.

    - Dolson laid out expectations for portal results and win/loss results next season that would result in letting Woody go; just my opinion but it sounds like Buckner, boosters, etc. got him the 4th year but Scotty Dolson has his finger on the eject button and Woodson knows it. Fully expect him to announce a "planned retirement" next year so he can go out on his "own terms"

    - For what it's worth, Dolson did put out feelers and got positive feedback on interest from 2 of his top 3 potential replacement candidates; think we can get May with a text message, Pearl has serious interest but wouldn't make a move if his team makes a FF run or wins a natty.

    - I think we as a fanbase/board are higher on Dusty than the administration/BoT; sounds like they're only interested in a homerun hire, win now guy if they do move and risking a third straight miss isn't something they're willing to do and just because he has IU ties and made a good tourney run, feeling is May isn't a guarantee at this level.

That's what I've got that I'm able to share comfortably right now. Not what myself or anybody on this board probably wants to hear. Moral is one more year is 95% likely (everyone root for UCONN in the S16, and a miracle!) It's kind of messy internally and they're trying to move on to get IU back to a top tier program while letting Woodson ride into the sunset having left the program in a good place and "stepping aside" for the good of the program. ??

If Woodson cared about the good of the program then he would have stepped aside this off-season.

This is nothing but purgatory for year and putting us back even farther

  7. He could always give himself an out in his contract should iu come calling.  Of course, it is unknown if osu or Louisville would do something like that.

Going to Purdue didn't stop brohm from flipping to Louisville.

I don't know what dusty makes now but might be difficult to pass up millions regardless of how much he wants to be at iu.

I would probably take the job at osu or Louisville and try to make it as easy as possible for iu to steal me later.

'Chill out' is a phrase used by every 22 year old in the world in every situation.  It's harmless and meaningless.

Woodson talking about 'true fans'?  Yeah, that pissed me off.

It's combined with the part about you don't get an opinion unless you coached.

So what I learned is I better support woodson if i want to be a true fan and I need to go find a coaching job in order to have an opinion.

The thing is that what we see in public is probably only 25% of the things that players and coaches receive from fans. We saw the letter that TJD got last year from a fan. DD said he got to read a lot of the letters that was to coach Davis from the fans. He couldn't believe the hatred that came from these fans.

I am sure there is stuff that gets sent that is way out of line and most of us would probably agree on it.

I see nothing in Anthony's quote that I have an issue with, and I am not on Team Woodson.

It's a player defending his coach.  One could argue Leal maybe should not have been giving a speech at all since he's coming back.  But, since he had the opportunity, he should be able to share how he feels.

I was at Juwan Morgan's Sr. Day, and he never even mentioned Archie.  He thanked Crean, but did not utter the words 'Coach Miller' at all.

THAT was much more of a red flag about the state of things than Leal coming to Woodson's defense.  If anything, Leal has every right to be upset with Woodson that he did not get quality playing time earlier.

We should embrace Leal's attitude, selflessness, and commitment instead of criticizing him for defending his coach.

It's not the coming to woodson's defense that people take issue with..  It's the "there's a reason you guys aren't coaches" line that seems to indicate people who haven't coached don't get an opinion.  and then at the end telling people to chill.

People are allowed their opinion regardless of their coaching experience.  Just like Leal, who has never coached, is allowed his opinion.

I was addressing that the whole time. Jesus christ. You don't think the fans play a role in the mental taxation of the D1 athlete?

What are we even doing at this point? Absolute waste of time if you can't follow along any better than this.

says the person that misquotes me.

I don't think the fans treat players poorly.  And if players are taxed by fans that criticize their play on the court, then maybe they should stay away from social media.

    I don't. lol

You verbatim asked "Care to explain what shit they have to put up with?"..... so, again, you not understanding the struggles an athlete can go through is an interesting perspective to have in regards to this discussion. But because you think they get free shit it's easy? Crazy. I guess, using your words, I would call that pathetic.

Didn't say it was easy and I was asking about what shit do they have to put with from fans, given that was the subject at hand.  You are trying to move the goal posts.

No, I am not acting like that, at all.

Not understanding how mentally taxing what some of our players go through, a lot of D1 athletes go through is an interesting perspective to have in regards to this discussion, though. Your words.

But getting all butthurt over AL's words from Sunday is just wild.

Those were not my words.  Have issues with reading and comprehending?

    Pathetic.

Right, until you realize these are actual people.

    and?

Does that mean no one can have a negative opinion on what they say publicly or on how they perform on the court?

You are acting like we are defending death threats or even personal insults against the player.  Talk about an over-reaction.

Wasn't necessary? If you are in Leal and TG's shoes, and feel the way they do... they seem VERY necessary.

Idk the types of shit these guys gotta put up with from fans.

Care to explain what shit they have to put up with?   I bet for the most part treated very well by fans and they are big men on campus.

Any negatives they are dealing with in regards to fans are probably the same shit all players in the past have put up with as well, except now they are getting paid 6 figures.

Sorry but I don't think even other students would feel sorry for their lot in life.
