It’s the offense! We dribble to much! Michigan did a great job of get us all to one side  then pass the ball quickly to the other side to a wide open shooter! Johnson throws up to many junk shots hoping to get a foul called! Can you remember one time when he drove the lane and when it collapse he passed it out to a three point shooter!

Not sure you noticed but they weren’t open.

They’re one dimensional and liabilities on defense. What do these guys bring to the table if they can’t/don’t shoot?

I think we need to start looking at other options. Let’s give Bates more minutes. Maybe he can gain confidence.

Kopp hit his open shots today. They stick to him and Parker  like glue. Woody ran 3-4 plays for Stewert and he hit those. The other shots he missed were forced late shot clock stuff. They do what they are asked/capable of. Our other guards are so inconsistent even when they are open. Leal isn’t the answer yet, Trey missed all 5 of his shots, X looked pretty darn good, lander is hurt but he can’t play D. I’m not sure people understand we have a flawed roster. Michigan went 5 out and we can’t defend that. Iowa went 4 out and killed us with it. Not many teams can. Bates can’t hit the broad side of a barn. If we had stuck with him we would lose by 20 a night.

Michael Durr is player I'm most intrigued by. Its been a long time since IU has had a 7 footer with 250 frame that could bang. Marco Killingsworth comes to mind, but I really don't like to reference former IU players connected to the Sampson era.

Killingsworth was not a 7 footer. He was barely 6’7”. He was more Barkley like. Durr can’t elevate. He’s an under the rim type. He’s just going to be a serviceable body. I’m not sold that he will play a ton.

Heard and knew this about her but nice to see President Whitten on the team plane traveling to Iowa City. Stuff like this matters in the big picture world....plus she's just a normal football fan. Glad she's at the helm!

IU has been waiting for a president like her for 2 decades. She will be very visible at sporting events. She loves football especially from what I hear.

This is the best comparison I can think of. So much speed on both sides of the ball. We need Carr to become Edge or Joseph now

I think we forced the run at times last year. I think we will hold their D line in place for as long as possible. Play with pace. We might let Penix audible more without the card. He’s a very smart QB. I think Iowa thinks they are good enough to play straight up(no twists) to their own fault. I’m hoping Penix is accurate early and I think he will be.

Exactly.  In comparison Freeney and Mathis would probably have been great anywhere but when Peyton gave them the lead look out they became next level. I expect us to get up early on most teams and let the Defense have fun!!

That’s really all we had except the colts safeties where pretty good but undersized. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

I worry about the loss of Jerome Johnson from last year...seemed like he was making all the big plays from the DL for us. I agree...we blitzed a lot. Would rather get home with just 4. Guess we will just have to wait til Saturday to see how far we've come.

Ryder Anderson looks pretty good. He can get into the backfield. We can blitz from just about every spot. I look for us to win some match ups this year.

Our OL was so bad we had to be vanilla or we would have been on our 7th string QB.

That’s not why we lost our starter plus our O line wasn’t bad at pass blocking. Run blocking is a different story. Watch this video.  We had to be kind of vanilla as we had no fall camp or coaching contact. I look for our offens to be much better and more dynamic. We had spring and full fall camp. I look for Penix to be a passing juggernaut. He’s got weapons all over the field. We will probably use our passing to score very quickly and let that defense eat!

I hope we can find a way to pull this out but I’m concerned. Iowa is just solid all the way around and they’ll have the advantage of playing in front of 70,000 for the first time in two years.

Penix is also playing in his first game off an injury, he can’t be rusty. He’s gotta be full go. I have confidence we can move the ball on anyone with him, but we can’t look like we did vs Penn State where it took him three quarters to get going.

Iowa fans are also nervous about what those 70,000 fans do to Petras. He’s a bit shaky and has never played in front of that many people. I think our run game improves enough and we aren’t a running team anyway. I bet we test their secondary early and often. We need a big arm day. IU 33 Iowa 17. Go Hoosiers.

How old is Mike Woodson?? Two good seasons are twice as many good seasons as we've had in the past several years...and I never said they have had sustained success. I think they are poised to have it (meaning a stable program with exciting and successful head coaches at the helm). If Auburn has hit their ceiling (a final 4) that is pretty good ceiling. Florida has been pretty dormant under White but they do have 2 national championships in the 21st century....the B1G has 1 combined...and that was over 20 years ago now. Wade in trouble...I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing is going to happen to Kansas and I seriously doubt it will happen to him either. My only point is the SEC in 2020....is radically different then a decade ago. The schools are placing an emphasis in basketball just as much as football when it comes to investing in the coaches and facilities....and we know they play dirty in the South....they are on the rise.

Well 5 years is a big difference in that age group. I get what you are saying but trouble is still trouble wether anything is done about it or not. Mike White is no Billy Donovan. Auburn isn’t UK and UK isn’t winning another ‘chip as long as Cal is still there. The SEC is still yet to prove its poised. Top to bottom the ACC and B1G is still tougher. Inmho

Yes. That was the norm. The fact of the matter is there is a new norm. New norm is yes it's still a top dominant conference but it is indeed a conference on the rise. I look at UK, Tenn, Ala, FL, Aub, Ark, LSU are all programs poised to have continued success..and with Texas coming in and Oklahoma...that's going to be a league that could likely see 8-9 teams annually in the tournament. It's no longer just UK that's for sure. The B1G and ACC still are probably the two best but SEC is going to be a part of that conversation with the new coaches and program resurgeance going on there...and taking two top tier b-ball schools from the Big 12 will only help.

Agree he doesn't want to lose at home....but mostly he doesn't want to play true road games...early in the season with young teams....it's almost a certain L. The fans though pay a crap ton for season tickets...they deserve quality basketball contests...but he is afraid of the heat.

Florida hasn’t been lighting it up. Mike white has gotten worse every year.(15-10 and 19-12)Rick Barnes is 67. Arkansas and Alabama have 2 good seasons combined. That’s not sustained success. LSU hasn’t done much either.  One sweet 16? Will wade is always in trouble too. That leaves Auburn and I think they have hit the ceiling. I just don’t see the SEC as on the rise. Sure Texas will help but that’s still a couple of years down the road.

SEC is stronger now then it has been in almost a couple decades. Its a conference on the rise as schools have really ratcheted up their coaching hires. I still think we have a more difficult conference but when Texas and Oklahoma arrive....could be a different story.

But that’s not the norm. In normal years the SEC has 2-3 good teams and the rest are awful. The bottom is still pretty bad. With Arkansas and Alabama being good helped. Of course auburn and Tennessee are good right now but for how long? Cal doesn’t want to lose a home and home.

You essentially said the same thing. I think their non-conf SOS is much better, but you’re right, they aren’t killing themselves because their SEC schedule is always mediocre. Our conference schedule will push us past them from an overall SOS perspective.

Cal is getting ripped to shreds on Rupp rafters. They view it as a lame excuse and a “duck”.

I agree.  If we play an exciting style, which i think we will. In my opinion we have the best staff in the country

From all indications and info. Woody is a great basketball mind and teacher. So far it’s caught most off guard(dumb guys like myself). I’ve heard he designed a defense still in use today. We will see soon. I sure liked what I’ve seen so far.

Same question here. I'd like to know if it's just the vibe of the people like Clowney's said.....or is it just the flow of the entire presentation from on the court, to fan support, to academics, to living arrangements, to NIL stuff.....I mean we all know we have a stacked staff but they still have to sell.

What every recruit we have so far have said everyone is real. Clowney mentioned how he’s a homebody but didn’t want to leave. Every indication is he was blown away, surprised and humbled all at the same time. It’s a trend so far. It’s looking as though this staff is quickly making inroads. Looking like an elite staff. I think we win a bunch of recruiting battles quickly.

I don’t know man. As much as I hate UK,  (and I mean HATE), I can’t say I agree.

    Duke

    @Notre Dame

    Ohio St

    Louisville

    @Kansas

Definitely better than our non-conf. Our SOS will eventually be better playing in the Big10, but we don’t have near the quality non-conf they do.

Robert Morris, Mount St Mary's, Ohio, Albany, Central Michigan, North Florida, Southern and High Point. It’s not like they are killing themselves. They don’t exactly have the in conference games we do either.
