Just looked at some stats, Wiscy's top two scorers shoot 36.5% and 37% from the 3pt line.

IU's top two scorers shoot 0% and 13.8%. I realize theirs are guards and ours are bigs, but that is a tough way to win in college basketball.

If one of them could hit at 33-35% it would completely change the offense.

I agree that is why they start but on the flip side the team has been getting off to too many slow first and second halves with that lineup. 8 points in 8 minutes to start a game or second half is becoming a bit too common.

How do we know the second team won’t either? We don’t know if the first team struggles with the other teams best. If that’s the case the second team would too. Everything is still speculation. My guess is Woody knows what he’s doing.

  3. Keep in mind our class rankings and individual rankings look great. Just one problem is we have no wings that can make plays individually. We don’t have a guy that can just get a bucket night in night out. That’s what we are missing. We don’t have any 4s that can shoot either. Most  Teams in the B1G do. Really hurts us.

That “understands we aren’t going to contend for anything”? I would love for you to ask CMW what he thinks about that comment because I guarantee you he won’t agree they “understand” that. They understand our limitations, but we’ve proven capable of beating any team in the Big10. If we’re happy at 7th then we didn’t play to our potential most of the year.

That’s an emotional take. Typical for many Hoosier fans. Woodson understands the limits of his roster unlike you. By all means email him. Every team in the B1G is capable of beating any team on any given day/night. Always has been this way. Most rankings put us at 7th so me saying 5th to 7th is actually giving them credit. You guys should too.

And we beat them with zero contributions & drastically less minutes from both Kopp and Stew despite TJD being on the bench. Can’t have it both ways.

Matchups matter. Woody knows this. For the majority of games Miller and Kopp fit the game. Woody even says this after a few dumb questions from fans and reporters. Give him a season or two. Very flawed roster that overall isn’t playing terrible.

Shouldn’t the question be, are we playing to our potential?

Probably pretty close. I’m not sure why people are so upset. We clearly have a better coaching staff that understands we aren’t going to contend for anything. I’m not sure what’s changed.( in the minds of fans) we are a 5th to 7th place B1G team just off the bubble and we are playing that way with a few hiccups and upsets. We are fine.

Great. So you agree with me that Kopp should get less minutes because Woody is already dialing back those minutes. Galloway having one bad game doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s more efficient than Kopp on offense and far and away a better defender. It’s not just about the offensive side of the ball either. Kopp & Stew consistently get beat on Defense.
What I’m talking about, along with everyone else commenting/writing about it, is why stick with a starting lineup that consistently creates deficits only to go to the bench to get back in the game, rinse and repeat in the second half, next game, etc. Asserting that we’re somehow better off or TJD /Race play better by allowing opponents to get out to 1st Half leads and squander our leads at the beginning of each 2nd half every night out is just weird position to take.

Problem with some of these bench players is sample size and the article mentions that. Is it they are better than the opposing teams second string? There is definitely an offense lineup and a defense lineup.

Motion offense in basketball = Triple option in football.

In today's game, programs that run these do so because they have to overcome a lack of talent. As a result it is difficult to recruit more talent because kids with NBA aspirations don't want to play in those kinds of systems. I see our staff running a system that will be attractive to higher-level talent. We just don't currently have a full compliment of players to execute that offense at a high/elite level. I too have been frustrated with our offense at times this year but then think back to the offense Archie and company ran (I don't even know what to call that other than "offensive") and feel much better about the direction we're heading.

I think Archie wanted to run a more modern offense he just didn’t get the right guys so he caved to try and win. If his guys would’ve hit their free throws he would still be here a few more years. Think about that one.  Probably a 20 win bubble team every other year driving us crazy.

I would rather see all 5 players in constant movement and move the ball by the pass than the dribble.

You must not watch much basketball or comprehend it today. The true motion years are over. Knights motion was designed to not only be efficient but to make you work on defense. The 30 second shot clock with a 20 second reset has changed that. We went from symphony’s to speed metal.

i dont know what you're watching, but teams dont sag off of P Stew and Kopp which does open the lane more than not having them on the court. I dont know if you recall Romeo's year where everyone had a foot in the lane because we didnt have shooters on the floor.

With the athletes on the floor today it’s hard to get everything off of just screens. Good teams switch rather effectively. That’s why we see hand offs and dribble drive. Draw defenders is more effective than just screening 3-4 times to get a guy open.

That only works when both can move effectively without the ball and create their own shot. We have have are two guys standing around watching post feed attempts and not in a position to recieve the kick out (not that TJD or Race are all that interested in such). When Galloway comes in, he drives to the basket drawling defenders or they let him take open runners. Having Stewart and Kopp on the floor isn’t opening up anything down low thus far.

    I’ll let Woody know.

I'm not sure where to find Stewart or Kopps  +/- numbers. But,  I would be shocked if they aren't pretty bad. You can somewhat hide one defensive liability,  but not two.  The numbers are pretty telling

You would be wrong. The problem with meme info like above isn’t telling us anything about the other teams substitutions/foul trouble etc. here’s the info. We just aren’t very good.

    TJD:  O  +7.7, D +4.8, total +12.4

    Race:  O:  +4.5, D + 4.1, total +8.6

    Galloway:  O:  +0.5, D +3.5, total +4.0

    Geronimo:  O:  +0.9, 😧 +2.8, total +3.6

    Johnson:  O:  +0.4, 😧 +2.9, total +3.3

    Leal:  O: -0.8, 😧 +4.1, total +3.3

    Kopp:  O: +0.9, 😧 +2.1, total +3.1

    Stewart:  O: +0.3, 😧 +2.4, total +2.7

    Phin:  O: -2.1, 😧 +3.0, total +0.9

    Bates:  O:  -2.0, 😧 +1.3, total -0.7

    Durr:  O: -4.6, 😧 +2.0, total -2.6

    Lander:  O: -5.0, 😧 +1.9, total -3.1

Agreed…although motion is still run…especially at many mid major programs as I saw it when I lived in Murray and with OVC teams like Belmont where there is not a lot of dominant players to run PNR etc….it is just harder to teach because of AAU mentality and me personality of kids now days. It takes longer to master and now both coaches and kids don’t stay in a program long enough to learn it…except sometimes at these mid major programs. Scott is actually right though…you absolutely still have enough time to run it though. Heck Golden St runs a version of it still in the nba at times when they want to run sets and not iso. I agree offensive rebounds leave little time to run it after that…that is a perfect time to get a reversal and post or pick n roll. I think this article summed it up though. It’s just very hard to teach and kids that are used to having the ball in their hand all the time don’t trust giving it up and getting it back.

    https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/clemson-146-s-brownell-on-why-the-motion-offense-is-declining-in-college-basketball/article_daaf6974-9720-5565-908a-5802f283832b.html

Funny thing is come tournament time…you see a lot of veteran mid major programs just out execute much more talented power 5 schools using variations of motion offenses because it’s very hard to prepare for and defend….only defense being taught is ball screen defense etc.

I agree on every point. I’m just pointing out the classic knight run one shooter off ten screens(exaggerating) classic motion won’t be used. Lots of motion concepts(tons of them) are still used. Woody will use some. He is building an offense that will be what kids want to play in.

I like his shot from the corner 3. Even his elbow jumper. I do think he is carrying too much muscle almost….I hope we try less bulk and more lean to maybe give him a little more quickness on the perimeter in defending. I understand he is a tweener but I’d like for him to develop more as a wing.

Well, from what I know their is no correlation with bulk and quickness. At least some trainers agree. I want guys who can bang.

We just don’t have good options at the 3. Bates has enough size & athleticism  to play it but his future is at the 2. Wouldn’t be worth it. Galloway can’t shoot and Geronimo needs to develop. Not sure what Leal is up to as he gets zero minutes. My two cents, Kopp and Stewart need to be spelling each other not on the court at the same time. Who steps in? I’ll let Woody figure that out but it’s obvious a change needs to happen.

Reason they play together early is to hopefully open up the inside. Get the paint going first. Keeps the D honest early. Neither one need to prove they can shoot. Trey can’t…Phin can but he’s 29% so far. That’s why they start. Plus they play pretty good defense.

I know the game is different but guys like Alford ran off screens all game long.  People say running motion can't be done because of the 30 second clock did not watch IU run it in the 80's and 90's.  very rarely did you see Iu run the clock down very much of at all.  Especially the 87 team and the Cheaney years we took a lot of our shots after a couple of passes.  What I see today is that coaches start their offense to late into the clock.  to me every pass or cut is supposed to be getting an open look for a shooter.  It seems like coaches want to run an offense to have one opportunity to get a shot.

Also, I think to get Race or Trace better post position they need to have those players moving and coming off cross screens. It seems like we just have them try to get post position by having them trying to basck that defender down.

Shot clock used to be 45. Also when it resets now it only goes to 20. You absolutely can’t run a knight style motion. It’s all about individual matchups today. The dribble drive took over because of this. It works. You just have to get the right personnel

If he wants to play in the NBA he needs to be. He needs to be able to play both just like OG. Just because Archie bulked him up to cover our issues at the 4 doesn’t mean that is all he can be. He still has hope of being developed to play both on the wing as inside and especially to at least guard the wing.

He will play both for us. He plays the 4 right now because he can. He’s actually out of position and it shows. He can do everything Smith could and shoot. He’s going to be great once we get a better lineup at the 4.

I would come out every game running sets to get Stewart some open looks. It seems if good shooters get started early, they are mor engaged in the game.

He runs plays for him and Kopp out of timeouts a lot. He can’t do it all game as they always adjust. We got Michigan on 3 in a row. 2 for Stewert and 1 for Kopp. Kopp hit all his open shots. Just didn’t have many. They both are catch and shoot players. Although Kopp can get by his guy some.

that would be great!  however since he shoots 11% out there, i don't want him to just keep shooting them until he makes one.  that doesn't seem like a good plan.  keep practicing them all you want in practice and on your own time big man!

Nope. Look at the catch and shoot (assisted 3)stat. He’s actually not horrible. 75%. It’s when he has to force it up. That’s when it gets bad. He will take open looks moving forward.

Mostly because they don't move to get open.  When was the last time you saw them running off screens,. curling through the paint or trying rub off a defender to get open.  I am not calling them lazy but they don't seem to try very hard to get open when they don't have the ball.

This isn’t true. This isn’t a true motion offense. Those take to long to develop. He ran 4-5 plays for Parker and he hit all but one. He ran a few more but Michigan adjusted. It’s actually funny when people start saying Parker and Kopp should move without the ball. They set up exactly where they are supposed to. They catch and shoot 3s at a very high percentage  clip. Problem is they are literally our best shooters. They get taken out of plays because they are the focus. They leave all our other “shooters” open. Wonder why? You won’t see anyone come off those two to double the post. Michigan went zone with Parker and Kopp out of the game too. Why? Because they are our only consistent shooters. Look at this.
