You know, if I was an Illini fan, I think I'd be on the verge of panicking...
2 holdovers from last year (Ty Rodgers and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn) and this bunch incoming...
Illinois Fighting Illini
Incoming transfers
Carey Booth: A 6-foot-10, 203-pound forward from Notre Dame, Booth averaged 6.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2023-24.Kylan Boswell: A 6-foot-2, 200-pound guard from Arizona, Boswell averaged 9.6 points and 3.6 assists per game as a sophomore in 2023-24.
Tre White: A 6-foot-7 guard, White averaged 12.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Louisville in 2023-24.
Jake Davis: A 6-foot-6 wing, Davis averaged 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a freshman at Mercer in 2023-24.
Along with freshmen 4 star Morez Johnson, and 3 star Jason Jakstys
They have 5 more spots, and one of their main targets, Northern Illinois F Xavier Amos just committed to Wisconsin...
Here's 2 text messages today. I'm paraphrasing. First....Underwood is so good at the portal no big deal. Second... Underwood has had one player stay with him for 4 years under his tenure at Illinois....kids hate him.
Here's what one of my more level headed Illini fans say. This is no way to have a program...but the ECUI crew will keep it going because Illinois hit S16 for first time in almost 2 decades.

2025 feels like forever but glad to see our staff has us in on top 10 kids. Of course things get tricky with who we just signed but we'll worry about that later. This kid Haralson and others. No shortage of talent.

Two things can be simultaneously true. You can hate the NIL/portal landscape AND be happy IU is taking full advantage of it. I identify with both of those positions.
I read this somewhere and have stole it and posted it many times. You can build a team through the portal, but you can’t build a program through the portal. We seem to have built a team this offseason, I just hope it translates into building a program.
Very fair for sure and for the most part I agree....although until the NIL is figured out would you rather spend resources on a proven 2-3 year vet or a top 30 kid out of high school? I know the blend is what I want but not sure what's possible anymore.

I didn't want to post this in any of the other threads so I'll throw it here. First...I absolutely don't like the current NIL model and what college sports has become recruiting wise. Secondly...I'd prefer for us to not have to do an offseason like this one again if we can. I mean I know we'll always be adding 1-2 portal guys but hopefully no more.
Finally my point though. Huge kudos and congrats to all of us who donate $ to help our NIL program. Whether it's $50, $5000 or $50,000 we all helped in some fashion in nailing this portal season. Was out having beers with buddies yesterday and one of them is a Carolina guy. His buddy is a Duke guy who hauled with the "IU just buying a team" stuff. Before I could inject my two cents the Carolina guy says....slow that down. He goes in the NIL world if there was one sleeping giant out there most knew it was IU. They are just now able to play the game we've all been playing for decades.
Thought people might like to hear some outsiders perspective.

He was already drafted by the Bengals, much to my delight.
7th round right? I just think he's so much better. I'm not saying Micah McFadden but same cloth.

I won't pretend to be anything besides a slightly above average football fan/observer.....but if Aaron Casey is an undrafted player there are dozens of GM's who don't get football.
-
So Hemenway is in play? Or has he always been?

Rumor he fell because GM's put out that Mitchell wasn't interested in the interview process and acted like he couldn't care less and made him out to have character issues. A WR that could have went 15th and fell to 52. Something is wrong.
If that's it I'm happy for Colts and Ballard. The amount of lies that are told this last week are staggering....and Ballard isn't dumb. Calculated or not I guarantee not only the kid but several others took notice of what he said and will remember.

Do you think his daughter gets super mad at him for hating on IU so much? You’d think people unfortunately give her trouble for her dad’s comments.
No clue honestly. It's kind of like when Archie helped one of Dakich's kids or wifes kid get an internship and subsequently trashes.
Me personally though.....I love IU more than the Goodman family. Won't support the kid because of the Dad.

Darn. Was hoping one of the locals would grab him. Isaac Guerendo ends up a 49er.

Kelly wasn't really injury prone as much as he had a major injury and came back.
More importantly, if we have to go back 40 plus years to find an answer, it kinda helps my point. 😁
Off the top of my head I don't know of any. Only guys that were destroyed in college that had long and successful pro careers were guys like Gore and McGahee.

So we have 2 left. 1 has to be an athletic big or whatever for depth. The other? I know, I know, I know....but wouldn't mind holding onto that last ship until we see what the NBA draft camps produce. I mean Mackenzie didn't commit to us until mid May last Spring.

Looks like a good pick by Ballard
WR .Mitchell from Texas
They traded down 6 spots and got 2 additional 5th round picks
What was the deal with him. I guess I missed what Ballard was going off on.

From an outsiders average NFL fan perspective I just love the way Philly and Baltimore draft.

Somewhere Jeff Goodman is at Buffalo Wild Wings getting the pulse of the program. I'd be fine if he and any offspring are banned from the campus.

Another great addition by our staff. Glad for the kid and his family....knowing how much IU means to them all they have to be ecstatic right now.

That’s not new is it? I thought I saw he wasn’t returning to MSU a week ago. Or is it just now official?
Sorry gang. Maybe it was old news. I just saw it today.

I almost like day 2 more than opening night. Glad the Pacers start earlier. No doubt the NFL influenced that for sure.
Also wanted to say thank you one last time to the Carolina Panthers. With you the Bears wouldn't have DJ Moore, Darnell Wright, Tyrique Stevenson, and Caleb Williams along with your 2nd round pick next year. Thanks again!

Laiatu Latu to Colts...first defensive player taken in draft.
Hearing the interview and watching some of the stuff it might be a character thing. Turner is phenomenal but for this many teams to pass I have to be missing something.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....you have to say things like that very quietly. Considering how far superior both programs are to ours. No way people know we have those records vs the top 2 teams in Big 10 last year or two.
