He likes to push the ball, he likes to drive and he doesn't shy away from contact. It's almost like he's Galloway with a deadly three point shot.

I am sure he wouldn't be quite as impressive against power5 conference players but he looks to have a good motor, quick release and aforementioned jab step.  Will be interesting how he does at big school

Somebody was talking about Kyle Mangas from IWU a couple of pages back (which ai can't find now)....and I kinda brushed it off because he's in the NAIA. But the guy is like 40% from three and scores almost 30 a game. And then I saw his highlight video on Twitter...he's pretty darn athletic too. Just a little intrigued.

To the person who posted that, is there any report of IU being interested?

He's got that jab step back 3 that yogi used to use all the time.  No one uses it anymore and its a killer move

They would have been very good complimentary players, but I think he was just saying Johnson is better at creating his own shot. Which at least appears to be true based on highlights.

That could also be because of the offense X ran vs what we ran last year with AF.  Who really know.  Completely different coaching styles from all 3 coaches.  Tough to lose AF but from the moment that CAM was fired, AF didn't seem to be connected to IU any longer.   So i agree he was probably connected to the coach over the school.  Tough loss since he seemed to be the kind of kid who would work his tail off each year to get better.  And he will be better this year and honestly Bennet should make him even better than what he could do on his own or under CAM

Well you will have to call it a day because we will be full. Woodson will have a lot of hungry mouths to feed....hopefully we win and everyone plays well and that helps keep everyone happy.

I hope all these returning players have a big developmental gain this year and learn to shoot and hit open shots.  This team was a particularly good shooting team, even when they were open.   Hoping it was a mental thing connected to CAM and not just really bad shooters.

Last... season... of.... play. He did shoot 39% as a FR for Pitt. You'll probably change the goal posts again. Oh well, I tried.

Not moving the goal posts.  Just won't get excited until they prove something.  I have been here and excited to many time to fall for it again.  Fool me 4 times, shame on me.  Not this time.  Nope.  Going to wait for the to prove it was a good hire and they can win basketball games, or hell, improve players from year to year would even be nice to see.

I am very cautiously optimistic.  But i will not jump feet first into the this.  But i fully expect next year to be similar to this year.  It is the same players.  The same BBIQ and same inability to shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor.  As mentioned so many times in the past.  The coach can't shoot it for them, just put them in position.  And we missed so many open and easy shots.

So I will wait.  Might make me a bad fan or something.  But i will only put my hand in fire like 4 times before i learn.  I might be stupid but i am not that stupid :)

Dad died/he has a good relationship with Kenya. Other than that, I don't know. He's a career 36.6% 3pt shooter on 7 attempts a game. For reference.. before Zeisloft came to IU he was a 37.3% career 3pt shooter on 4 attempts a game.

I feel a bit better about him now that he started at a big school and then went to UT Martin.  And that he shot better that Pitt than UT Martin.  I hope he is as good as advertised.

Assuming Race goes (or even if he stays), we need to find a 4 man who can shoot.

We need more than just a 4 who can shoot.  We need several players at all positions who can put the ball through the baskets.  As mentioned many many time under the CAM tenure, he can't shoot the ball for them.  And they had allot of open and point blank looks that didn't go in, for 4 years.  So we need some upgraded shooters or a huge leap in our current rosters shooting percentage

i don't think so at all.  i think the majority were very disappointed.

I just think it was the lazy "Hire and IU Guy" choice being pushed by a powerful group behind the scenes.  It was also the cheap way out (although 3.5 mil still isn't cheap).  I doubt we ever really considered anyone or talked to any big name head coaches including Brad Stevens.  This was plan A the whole time.

Will it work out, We will see.  I am not negative about the hire or the program because its what I expected them to do.  So far some good solid assistant coaches have been good.  Matta to help out can't hurt.  Getting some of our players to recommit kind of feels like when CAM started though having to re-recruit players, so well see.  We'll see how he does in the transfer portal and recruiting trail to see how he fill the gaping holes in our roster.

Win big and no one will care.  But if he struggles you're going to see allot of fans vocal and won't stand for the he needs 5 years talk.   Most of the fans wanted a Whale of a hire.  They wanted a big name and didn't care about salary numbers.

God i hope he wins big and is the next generational coach at IU, i really do.

Sure. The reality might not catch up to the expectations or goals just yet, but I firmly believe a championship mindset should be established right from the jump. I don't think that should be something you ease into.

Again i don't disagree. But we haven't seen a single practice yet.  We don't know a single thing yet about how he is going to coach in college.  We don't know how he and the assistants will interact.  I want to be pleasantly surprised versus woefully disappointed because i set my expectations so high that its so very unlikely to happen.  Calling him King Woodson.  And claiming every recruit will fit perfectly in his scheme.  Or guaranteeing banners within years.  I personally can't get that excited yet.  I am getting more interested in seeing what happens.  But i not crowning any coach the next coming.  Just not my style any more.  I have been burned to much to jump in feet first.  I will wait and see.  Hope you all are right and i can join the bandwagon later.

I would rather have expectations extremely high and the team/staff reaching for them, than lower expectations that are met.

They should be stretch goals.  But to many are talking Banners already in year 1 or 2.  That is always the goal but i don't feel should be the expectation in the next couple years.  We need to rebuilt and redesign.  It could happen but i am not hanging my hat on it

You also have to see how teams like Iowa, UI, UM and see how many guys stay or leave the program.

don't disagree.  I am talking strictly the talent we have/had on this team.  Will they improve shooting?  Will they play better defense without the pack line?  Will they increase the BBIQ.  Will they make AF like jumps?

I often wondered how talented we were this year vs how well coached they were.  I think its a combination of both.  I just think we should temper our expectations of next year.  I would be happy to show actually improvement from players and then in the W/L column.  Have a recruiting class/Portal transfers to fill actual holes we have.

So until then, i am cautiously optimistic

The real question is, how much improvement will there be?  I could see it quickly morphing from a rebuild to a fairly high level of success.  As you said, hard to tell until all the pieces are in place.

That is the million dollar question.  Will we go from a 12-15 to a 15-12, 17-10, etc.

Is the talent there and was a coaching issue.  Was it a talent issue alone?  Or was it a combination.

I really do hope we have the success everyone seen to want to predict already.  Allot of championship talk about there already and every recruit is a perfect fit for Coach Woodson's approach to basketball.  And we haven't yet seen a single practice let alone a game plan.  I am afraid putting this coaching staff that high up on a pedestal is going to cause allot of heartache if they can't live up to the Second Coming of Coach Knight mentality allot of people are having right now.

I do hope everyone is right.  I just can't jump on that wagon yet.  I plan to walk a little further down the path before getting excited about anything IU men's basketball.  But then again, I am a terrible fan who should go back to Peegs

  13. meh, maybe he doesn't match well with Coach Woodson.  just because many on here think he is the second coming of Coach Knight doesn't make him that.  Maybe he was told to expect one coaching hire and then we ended up with Coach Woodson.  Maybe he doesn't trust the administration any more.  Maybe he was told they were not going to fire CAM and then did it.  He is 20, who knows what's going on in his head or within the program.

If he wants to transfer, ok, get on with it.  If he comes back, he will be slightly tainted but i am sure that will wear off as the season progresses.

Oh, I know...Like I said, I lived across the street from a fanatical Hawkeye when I was up in Chicagoland...

But I knew the family long ago, and I'd never say a bad word against his father, Sam...One of the finest men I've ever known...

Yeah he just wasn't a good for for rural farmland Iowa.
