But... But... He plays good defense....
He absolutely does not. He lets his guy blow past him to the bucket and expects someone else to stop it. It’s like he’s switching on an invisible pick

How many wide open 3s does Woody want to give up before he stops this asinine, double every post feed no matter what, strategy?

Of course X had a terrible game, but I want to talk about Reneau. Go back and count how many times his man grabbed an offensive rebound. I know he is probably our best offensive option, but I would prefer someone play who actually cares a little about defense
There’s a nba mock draft that describes MR as a “tenacious rebounder” and all I could do was laugh.

I think it's very unlikely we see any rule changes that restrict a person's ability to work. There's no other occupation, outside of athlete, where anything remotely like these rules are allowed by law. The trend is very much against placing further limitations on work.
If it’s allowed in baseball, there’s no valid argument to disallow it in basketball. Especially now where foreign pro leagues are more accessible than ever and the creation of the G-League or whatever they call it.

Another year of massive turnover and building a whole new team.
The NBA/NCAA adopting the baseball model for professional eligibility would be a huge start while they sort out the transfer rules mess. Wanna go pro outta high school? Fine. Wanna come to college? Ok, but you’re here for 3 years. Im all for progress and taking care of the student athletes but at some point, the product on the court has to matter.

The plan is still to go pro and the staff is planning as if he will be gone. That could change of course depending on NBA feedback after the season but as of now that’s the plan. His progress is trending in the right direction for that as of late as well.
In Europe or Asia?

I don’t think you need athleticism to rebound well. Towson and St Mary’s are top 5 in offensive rebound rate, most of the top 10 defensive rebounding schools are smaller schools (like army), or schools that aren’t necessarily athletic like Wisconsin.
Athleticism and size help. But it starts with basic stuff like boxing out and effort.
If you watched Sparks in the 2-3 minutes he played, you’ll see a guy who puts a body on a guy and boxes him out of the lane. Its textbook. If you watch everyone else, you see standing near the basket, jumping at the ball.

Mbako is so incredibly un-athletic. It’s wild to watch a guy with his frame struggle to get above the rim and move his feet on defense
-
Gallaway, man. What the hell happened to him? GF cheat on him with his dad? Seniors are destroying this team

I want audio of Woody screaming at these guys to block out or it’s never happened

I may be in the minority here but I thought we looked pretty bad. We’re lucky we’re only down one. Obviously rebounding is an ongoing issue but we also look completely clueless defending any screen action. Nobody is ever on the same page. It seems like half the time we end up with either two guys guarding the ball or nobody guarding the ball. “Communication” has been the excuse all season, but to me it’s on the coaches if it’s still happening half way through the season.
Winning the “Points off Turnovers” battle kept us in it. Hopefully we can clean up the perimeter defense a bit and get some better shots

I’m at the game and none of them block out. None of them go after loose balls. They play in a lot of areas like their feet are glued to the floor.
X needs to shoot the ball. He didn’t miss in warm ups.
I agree but it is hard for X to get his shot off unless he’s wide open. He falls in love with driving and leaving his feet at the basket, leading to some WILD layup attempts. Unfortunately it’s a problem we have to live with because after 5.5 years, he aint evolving his game

I think I’m more annoyed at the terrible rebounding more than the bad defense. We have the biggest lineup ever and we can’t stop 2nd chance opportunities.
Gotta block out. Find me a still shot of Galloway actually boxing out and I’ll buy you a drink. Only picking on him because he’s a senior but most on this team are guilty of it. This team and their complete lack of fundamentals is tough to watch

Sparks had zero turnovers, gave up zero points, best +\- on the team…clear choice

Someone in the game thread said that a coach can preach until he is blue in the face, but it’s up to the players to execute. I agree, except that it is then the coaches job to put said player/s on the bench until they conform. Coach Knight was a big believer in the bench as a motivator, how did CMW not learn that?
Our guards have been the problem all year and we don’t have anyone to replace them on the court with. We got some good post players in the portal but we needed guards

Woody doesn’t know how to coach at this level. He’s a great guy who was a pretty good NBA coach but that style of play doesn’t work with this team and his substitution patterns are puzzling.
This team failed miserably in every fundamental category tonight.- 1

MM makes shooting look easy. We need him on the floor. Even by process of elimination, others disqualify themselves. You need minutes from MM.
Extremely low motor. Can’t dribble, pass or defend. Can’t score in the paint. You can’t just be a shooter and succeed.

Wow, these guys show a ton of respect doubling down a guy who has 2pts on the night. This team has zero understanding of how to play team defense.

I think Dunnam jumped the gun. It takes two to tango so to speak
He’s arguably the best DB on the from a year ago. Led the team in INTs and was 4th on the team in tackles, (as a sophomore) at a position of need. I mean, ok?

Nice to see Ware wake up from his nap

Kind of feels like we should be up by more than nine.
That 2nd unit gave up a ton of points it seemed. Not s terrible half but definitely need to play better in the next 20

Walker is emerging as a top three or four player on this team. How am I wrong?
It’s easy to see Woodson is going to stay with his A & B team. Games like this should be fine but I hope he keeps the bench short for B1G play
We need guys who can spread the floor. He may be the 3rd-4th best player on the team right now but he’s behind Malik and Ware. Hard to believe a lineup with all three would work

Zebras bailed us out. 9 games out of 10 Reneau gets called for a foul there
MR didn’t make contact with him. Got a small piece of the ball with it out of his hands

Good thing Cig is bringing his own strength coach
Wellman is quite literally one of the best in the business. If not for being an alumn, IU would never have been able to hire him.
Hopefully Ownings brings something unique and innovative to the program but lets not pretend that a guy who has been out of college 5 years is an upgrade.- 1

The “scheme” Woody has deployed on defense just isn’t working and it’s embarrassing to watch these guys fail night after night and nothing changes.
