That’s the main positive. Defense was impressive. We can win 6 games, but Walt Bell is going to have to improve. Least innovative offense I have ever seen. We’re in this game today with a competent OC.

How innovative do you want an OC to be with two freshmen QBs playing against a defense with 5+ pros on it? This also wasn’t Bell operating in a silo. Allen wanted this game plan. I get why it’s frustrating to watch and root for but I can’t imagine opening up the playbook would have yielded better results

Sounds like CJ has been picking Calbert's brain.  I loved bringing that guy back...#40 has always been that dude for me and I think the wisdom he brings the team is really going to help out.

Got the chance to meet him at a Bob Knight basketball camp back when I was a kid. I’ve never met a guy who’s as kind and humble yet successful as Calbert. One of a kind type of dude. Wish we brought him back a long time ago.

I’ve been watching him a lot here at the Mike Woodson  camp yesterday and today. I have a feeling he will be a fan favorite by year’s end. Great personality and energy. Plus he looks ready for the rugged, physical B1G style of play.

Big question in my mind is, does he have enough ability on both ends to secure meaningful playing time? Especially if Mgbako ends up playing the 4 and Banks is as improved as anticipated. I can’t remember a time when we had this many capable big men on the roster

This guy declared for the draft and got invited to G League Elite Camp? What am I missing?

"Dayton forward Mike Sharavjamts is entering the 2023 NBA Draft, per sources. The 6-foot-8 freshman wing averaged 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 23.1 minutes in 32 appearances with the Flyers this past season."

"The Mongolia native shot 38.8% from the field, 31.5% beyond the arc, and 67.7% at the foul line. Sharavjamts ranked 16th in the Atlantic 10 in defensive box plus/minus (1.4), 20th in defensive rating (100.5), and 17th in assist percentage (21.5%)."

He declared for the draft one day before my scheduled declaration event to try and steal my thunder…typical Mike

Don’t worry Boiler, I got this…He was falling way down the depth chart after a poor spring. Everyone saw this coming. He clearly doesn’t fit the new system…addition by subtraction. He’ll probably land at Toledo or Kent St. or wherever…

Meanwhile, Hall, Bergeron and Ming’s all get picked. All positions of need.
Would rather have one higher rated player than 2-3 slotted for 5th round

We need a CB more than those guys but I still think he should have taken Branch. He also got basically nothing of real value trading down twice. The Raiders trade was a joke

@Hoosier82 I will mention... not ALL of those "rush" attempts are rush attempts. Any time a QB is sacked in college, it's counted as a rushing attempt, which is embarrassingly stupid they still do it that way. Sacks drastically change QB YPA. But I do agree... just watching this kids film... Ramsey is quite a bit better of an athlete, and bigger.

I understood that and compared sacks to rushing attempts and it clear as day this guy doesn’t look to run the ball. For instance, his best sample size was in 2021 where he was sacked 10 times. Which means he “rushed” the ball a grand total of 16 times over the course or 7 game appearances.
My main point was regarding Boiler’s assertion that the Air Raid offense Harrell utilizes requires a mobile/duel threat QB and thus Brady Allen was shown the door, is absurd and lacking any relevant rationale.
Whether Card could be an effective running QB if he ever played in a system that’s built around a duel threat? Maybe? Probably not and we’re not gonna find out.

Basing it on multiple reports from staff who have seen practices. He took a prep year and has impressed so far. When you say Card doesn’t run, what’s that based on? He has dual threat ability.

His stats in 3 years at Texas. Averaging less than 1.5 yards per carry and one TD in almost 50 rushing attempts. Peyton Ramsey had duel threat ability. This guy isn’t that and likely has no intention to be.
Which is great for Harrell who wasn’t a duel threat QB at Tech, has never coached duel threat QBs at any level and is a disciple of Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense. This is the precise system he deployed at North Texas and USC and will be the system he will implement at Purdue, assuming Brohm gives him total control over the offense.
You’re once again out over your skis, Boiler…walk it on back.

  9. 40 minutes ago, Stlboiler23 said:

Why’s that so hard to believe? He’s a better fit for Harrell’s offense (ability to use his legs) than Allen is. Allen came back after entering the portal once and either 1 of 2 things happened:

    1. He saw that his playing time/path moving forward wasn’t what he wanted

    2. He was given “the talk” by the new staff that he might not be a great fit for their offense so he left.

I agree about getting someone else in the portal but Card is going to be a stud.

He’s been on campus 3 months. What are you basing this off of? Zero chance that kid is QB2 ready. He wasn’t even that good in high school. Also, Card doesn’t run so you better hope the system doesn’t require a duel threat QB…which it doesn’t. JT Daniels rushed for -51 yards last year at WVU. Prior to that his QB for three years at USC, Kedon Slovis averaged 30 carries for negative -50 yards per season. You’re grasping for straws that don’t exist

Heard he was 3rd on the depth chart behind a transfer and a true freshman.

I sincerely doubt Browne has had enough meaningful reps in front of the staff to even make the depth chart, much less pass Allen. Purdue fans always have a creative way to spin negative news. You guys better go get someone in the portal. Otherwise an injury to Card is the end of your season.

Not sure the best place to post this, but Sampson James posted on his Instagram less than an hour ago that he is committed to….IU.

Guess that stolen playbook rumor was BS. Regardless, I’m not sure he’s a kid you let back in the locker room after transferring to your instate rival and instantly quitting on them too. Competitive sports are different these days.

Time will tell for sure. He's got of recruits coming. No clue if that translates to wins.....but they had 2000 tops at their spring game last year. This year almost 50k. Season tickets all sold out. So far it's a win.

I absolutely believe he can be successful there but it’s not going to happen overnight. However, anointing his son QB1 before spring ball and making everything about him isn’t a good start. If they go 3-9 this season (incredibly likely) many of those season ticket accounts won’t be renewed. He would have been better served spending a couple years building a foundation before creating this circus day 1

Odd weekend at Colorado. First off. Colorado is getting exactly what they wanted. People talking about them because of Prime. Season Tickets are sold out. They had almost 50k for their Spring Game. That's all on Deion.

Now the strange part. WR Montana Lemonious-Craig entered the portal last night after being the star of the Spring Game Saturday. Some are suggesting he used the spotlight/notoriety of the Spring Game to promote himself and get better NIL offers? Colorado also had a 4 star DB back out of commitment as well.

Mission accomplished so far for Colorado. People talking about their program.

Their spring game event was bizarre to watch. It was the most “fake it till ya make it” thing I’ve ever seen in major sports. Deion seems to think his instant success in the HBCU world will translate in the power 5 realm and he’s in for a rude awakening. I get humility is not his style but his inability to manage expectations is going to blow up in his face.

IU should be looking to upgrade both wing positions. I love Galloway as a player but he is extremely limited offensively.

Galloway doesn’t play the wing, he’s a combo guard. I’m fine upgrading at the 2 spot and bringing Galloway off the bench but that guy would need to be able to spell XJ if needed. That’s not Ledlum. He’s a solid get for UT though.

IU doesn’t have a single player who averaged double figures last year returning. He absolutely fills a position of need; scoring. Our off-guard/wings for next year are Galloway, Gunn, Banks, and Newton who was hurt most of his senior year. We have 3 open scholarships. You could have recruited Ledlum and still taken 2 sharpshooters from the portal. IU needs bucket getters in the worst way possible.

College basketball rosters are a puzzle and the pieces have to fit Woody’s system. Like I said, you absolutely take Ledlum but the priority is to find a sharpshooter who can be a starter in his system, pulling defenses out of the paint. XJ and Galloway are primed to be the slashers to the rim, Ware and Malik will handle the paint. Hopefully Cupps, Gunn, Banks and Sparks can contribute off the bench…The only missing piece is the outside threat who can play the 3.

Had 17 and 9 against Kansas

He had 18 shot attempts and 5 turnovers. I also never understood the obsession over this kid. Don’t get me wrong, you absolutely have to take him if you have an open spot. However, he doesn’t fill a position of need, which is a outside sharpshooter at the wing who can make FTs at a much better clip than 63%

    Agree.

I do wonder, him "signing" that contract, which I get means absolutely nothing whatsoever... but, at least to me.... He could be saying I'm either coaching at FAU or IU and there is nothing in between. I mean, a 10yr contract at FAU? Why?

"IU" as in.. I'm willing to wait out Woodson, while at FAU. If all that made sense.

I wouldn’t be surprised (assuming IU is in fact his dream job) if his contract extension includes an out clause specifically for IU should he get an offer.
