Yes, they only played FL Atl, SMU & Memphis once, but won all three, including at Memphis. Yet they still trail all three in the NET. It’s a flaw of the NET that a non con game in November or December means more than head to head games in February

Most definitely not a flaw. If you don't count non-conference games then there's no way to "connect" all the conferences and you'd get garbage results. And how do you propose to use head to head when you're comparing literally hundreds of teams that mostly do not play each other?

    FL Atlantic, 22-7 overall, 12-4 in AAC. 4-5 road, quad 1: 1-3, quad 2: 6-2, quad 3: 9-0, quad 4: 6-2. #37 NET

    S. Florida, 23-5 overall, 16-1 in AAC. 15 straight wins including FL Atlantic. 7-3 road, quad 1: 1-0, quad 2: 5-3, quad 3: 8-0, quad 4: 9-2. #75 NET, behind FL ATL, SMU and Memphis in net rankings, but leads conference by three games and is undefeated against all three conference teams with higher NET rankings

Can we get a comparison on non-con performance of these 2?

AAC does some funky scheduling, they have all their top teams play each other twice and the bottom teams play each other twice. So USF only played FAU, Memphis and SMU once each.

Good exercise in understanding why conference record/standing can't be used.

Zach was splitting FT.  I might have fouled….muck it up

My one question is that Illini were letting Edey get his in the first half and keeping the supporting cast under control. Then to start the 2nd, we start doubling the post? Even though that strategy was abandoned fairly quick, it seemed to allow Purdue to get comfortable making some 3s and that was the killer.

Also at the end I think Hawkins tried to foul Edey when he got the ball in the back court and of course that's the one time the refs don't call anything. Ended up with the strange forced shot from Jones that we couldn't rebound and then  a Smith dagger.

I was responding to the notion that NET doesn’t matter much, that it’s based on quad records. If true, MSU is at best a bubble team

St Johns is probably currently out and their quad 1 and 2 record is just as good as MSU

NET still matters, just not as much as the resume. It's not all or nothing, they look at a lot of different data.

Yet, I'm seeing MSU consistently as a 9 seed. Bracket Project has them in 104 of 104 brackets. They are 4-8 in quad 1 games and 4-4 in quad 2. IU is 3-8 and 4-4, respectively and isn't sniffing a bid. MSU is NET #22 and IU is NET #101

MSU's closest game vs a Q4 team was a 23 point win over Southern Indiana

IU had 3 Q4 wins that were single digit victories

All of MSU's Q3 wins were double digits

IU had 2 single digit Q3 wins and 1 double digit loss

    It's not all that mysterious.

Underwood will find talent. 7 years on the job. 2 tourney wins. Man UofI has the ECUI crowd in top shape....good luck this Spring....you have to be the only Illini fan I know who actually thinks Underwood is in good shape.

LOL. Any Illini fans who don't appreciate what Underwood has done to rebuild the program are morons. The Loyola game really scarred some of them.

My question is do you think that method is sustainable with that much roster turnover each year? I think it can be tough because you don’t know if guys are in it to be program guys or just in it for a paycheck.

I don't think you want to bring in 5+ one year guys each season but probably as many transfers as HS recruits. I think finding some mukti-year guys will be important. It's the new reality.

@BruceDouglas Saw Luke Goode is going through Senior Night as a Junior tomorrow, potential transfer candidate?

Could be, though Underwood comments made it sound like it was his idea? Goode's probably a role player, so if he wants starting minutes he may move on.

My own opinion but I don’t think the portal will be as impactful once the COVID year is gone which IIRC, is after next season.  It’ll obviously still be there but I don’t think it’ll be to the same magnitude it’s been the last several years. Painter’s philosophy to continue building through the HS ranks and supplementing through the portal is a good philosophy IMO. Will Illini fans be kicking themselves that they didn’t go after Kanon Catchings because they were more focused on portal guys? Wouldn’t surprise me.

The pool will be smaller for sure, a lot depends on if the court ruling allowing multiple transfers holds up or not. I think the upcoming off season will be absolute chaos. Not worried about Catchings, Underwood will find talent.

They lose 3 in a row and improve. I hope IU follows the Big 12 lead. Schedule 300+ opponents and beat them by 30 is the key to good metrics besides the normal tough games. The heck with the in between stuff.

You need a bunch of teams to do the same and I'm still not sure it's some magic secret to beat NET. You still have to beat those teams by 40.

And maybe start off by beating Army by more than 8 points, eh? 🤣

Love the hyperbole lol. Show me where we’re acting like we’re on a UCLA type run.

Who’s saying that’s the zenith? We’ll continue to be a really good program after Edey is gone just like we were before he got here.

I love the “just wait until Edey is gone” takes as if people think we’ll suck. We heard the same thing about Swanigan, Carsen, Ivey, etc… Painter has things rolling and it’s not going to stop just because Edey leaves. With him gone and the incoming class coming in, we’ll still be a top 25 team easily.

I don't think Purdue will suck, Painter is too good of a coach. I do wonder at their ceiling if they continue to be somewhat adverse to using the portal. And I will be glad to see Edey move on, just don't enjoy the style of basketball he enforces on the game.

I'm going to bang this drum for the next two weeks. I'm looking at Sparty schedule and I just don't see how everyone still has them in tourney. Not even on the bubble or last 4. Wins vs Baylor, Indiana St highlight the nonconference. Best conference win is home vs Illinois....those 3 are it. Have lost 3 in a row as well yet they moved up in rankings.

    Just blows my mind.

Yeah, the metrics love them a lot. But look at the resumes of the bubble teams, and they still look a lot better. Worst losses are to Iowa and Ohio St.

I actually enjoy watching a Purdue guy and an Illinois fan go back and forth on an IU board. Incredible! But, I guess after the season we are having I guess it's better than nothing.

Well, it's a thread on Big Ten hoops. Better get busy recruiting some UCLA and Oregon fans for next year. 🤣

You think TSJ/Hawkins deserve to be All-Defense over Baldwin?

I think all 3 are decent candidates. I expect Baldwin will make it because many voters will go look at the stats and see that he leads the conference in steals (even though steals isn't really a great stat for defense). And Omoruyi will probably make it because he leads in blocks.

All-defense teams are really kind of dumb when you think about it. So much of defense depends on the scheme/teammates and doing stuff that doesn't show up in stats.

  11. 3 hours ago, Stlboiler23 said:

Curious what your two friends think about the TSJ situation? Seems like the majority of Illini fans I see are acting like it never happened and sweeping it under the rug.

His preliminary hearing was moved to May, until that happens there's nothing new to talk about. Media isn't bringing it up during Illini games either. Not sure what else you are expecting?

    3 hours ago, Stlboiler23 said:

That’s unfathomable haha. But Underwood thinks TSJ showed out on defense lol.

Christie had 17 points in the first half, TSJ guarded him in the 2nd half and he had 2 baskets, one with only 2 1/2  minutes left. He and Hawkins are good individual defenders but (especially Coleman) the way they are being used doesn't allow them to show it.

Illinois fans are pulling up random stats from when Rapheal played to try to show that he wasn’t THAT good of a defender. What a weird/entitled fanbase.

Davis was touting Ace Baldwin for his team and PSU's defense is worse than Illinois. There's that Boiler logic....

  12. 6 hours ago, Stlboiler23 said:

Yeah those losses haven’t been good but even with them, Illinois doesn’t hold a candle to Purdue the last 20 years lol. Illinois fans would trade places with Purdue in a heartbeat.

And maybe you'll make a Final Four before the 50th anniversary of your last one.

And no I wouldn't make that trade. Last 18 or 19, probably. 😂

I know we’ve flamed out early a few times the last few years but the arrogance of Illinois fans is off the charts for a program that hasn’t made the second weekend in almost 20 years.

    "a few times"

"a few times to double digit seeds"

"a few times to double digit seeds including the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history"

    🤣
