See, I don't agree. It's an accepted complaint, which I feel to be a myth.

If we had a pie chart with our "issues" or our "problems", IMO, "subbing" "platoons" (didn't happen)--- would be about 2%, at best, of the issue. My opinion.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"kind of the issue when you're subbing"---I mean, you can't make it through an entire season playing 7 dudes. And, Walker, XJ, Cupps, and Leal being a part of that Top 7 with CJ Gunn as your 8th guy---pretty well cements my opinion of "not even close enough talent".... AND AGAIN---WOODSON IS LIABLE FOR THAT TOO, I realize that.. Before someone, for the 100th time points that out.

It's like this tweet from a guy with a large platform in the Indiana Basketball space:

Like, I don't think that's true at all. We've definitely seen changes to the rotation as the season goes on. Lots of guys play early on, when Woodson is figuring things out. It's fair to say he uses too many games giving guys early run, probably a habit from being in the NBA. But the rotation will tighten up over the course of the season, and guys move in and out depending on what they're contributing. I don't think Woodson is any less flexible than most coaches. It's just one of those narratives that gets created early and repeated until it becomes dogma.

FWIW, here are the current projections at BartTorvik:

    • 6 - UCLA
    • 9 - Purdue
    • 15 - Michigan St
    • 16 - Indiana
    • 20 - Nebraska
    • 21 - Michigan
    • 25 - Rutgers
    • 27 - Northwestern
    • 29 - USC
    • 32 - Wisconsin
    • 34 - Ohio St
    • 39 - Maryland
    • 41 - Oregon
    • 54 - Iowa
    • 65 - Illinois
    • 66 - Minnesota
    • 78 - Washington
    • 85 - Penn St

And filling all that out just confirms the Big Ten has entirely too many teams.

Teams will continue filling out their rosters over the weeks to come, so with a mostly set roster it's possible we could get jumped. Michigan adding Goldin today gave them a big boost. Also, I suppose the portal is still open for another day or so, and you might still see guys leave; Illinois lost another just today.

Indiana down to 20th nationally today on Torvik. Still 4th in the Big Ten. This kind of movement should be expected, as we filled our rotation early in the portal season and other teams will continue adding pieces. This dynamic was always important to keep in mind when you hear places talking up Indiana as a top ten team or a Big Ten favorite.

Did we buy this team…sure did. That’s ok…but let’s not kid ourselves and think that all these kids were dying to come play for Woody. If Tom Crean was the coach this team would have been just as stacked.

Two months ago we were hearing about a mass exodus. Not only did none of that happen but several players players expressed public support of Woodson, on social media and even in senior speeches. Reneau and Mgbako didn't even test the NBA waters. Lots of schools have money. A paycheck alone isn't reason to stay at Indiana. So let's move past this silly notion that playing for Woodson has no appeal beyond a paycheck.

Of course, players loved Crean, and still do, so you might be right about that much.

  4. NIL budget might be necessary in this day and age. It's not sufficient. That is to say, any charges that Woodson only found success because he bought a team won't resonate with me at all.

If there's one complaint that brings all sides together, it would be that last year's roster was flawed. There's lot of disagreement within that space, sure. For example, I think buddy ball actually worked well with Ware and Reneau, and the lineup efficiency numbers back that up. Our struggles came when we weren't getting anything from our backcourt, and especially when we had to dip into the bench.

This year we're playing Reneau with another big again. But we've added serious talent in the backcourt, and depth on the wing. This portal season has been exciting not because we added talented pieces, but because of where we added them. Woodson may have been given a budget few programs could match, but how that budget got spent was on him. I think he picked some great targets, and now has a team positioned - on paper - to be much more competitive.

If you're going to criticize Woodson for last year's roster - and I do - then any success he finds with this year's roster needs credited to him as well. Not passed off to the boosters or wherever else.

Don't we still have 2 open scholarship?  We could add some talent still i guess

Sure. Adding Hemenway bumps us up from 17 (as of this morning) to 15. He'd project for about 15 minutes a game, ahead of Goode in the rotation actually.

Adding Konstantynovskyi wouldn't move the needle.

14 is about as high as we get, even adding two of the top remaining transfers like Johnell Davis and Great Osobor.

....as long as Coach Woodson and Co. don't do the "Creepy Crean" like this one! lol😆

"I am doing great. I have been thinking about you alot since last weekend. A whole lot. How are you doing?" 😳🤣

You made me tap the sign again.

Tom Crean sent that tweet on August 3rd, 2012. He deleted it, saying it had been intended as a direct message to a recruit. Well, two guys Crean was actively recruiting, and who had just picked up offers that July, were De'Ron Davis and Austin Conway, of Aurora CO.

On July 20, 2012, a movie theater in Aurora was the site of a mass shooting, in which twelve people were killed and 70 others injured.

Now, I can't know if the tweet was intended for Davis or Conway, or if the shooting was even a factor. But connecting the dots sure makes that possible, and a little empathy takes this tweet from being creepy to kind.

  8. Nothing wrong with a good IPA. Myself, I'm partial to a big bold west coast style rather than a juicy NEIPA. The issue is that IPAs are overrepresented in the market. It's hard to find breweries offering a good bock, saison or Belgian, though it's easier than it used to be.

Similarly, there's nothing wrong with having two excellent frontcourt players, even alongside a big three. The problem last year wasn't our starters, it was having no inventory in the backcourt to provide balance. We have that this year, and Goode is one more solid option on the perimeter.

So, if we all agree with this, what is it we are getting excited about???  :coffee:

Necessary vs sufficient. Nobody hangs a banner in the offseason. But what you accomplish in the offseason can make it far more likely you'll hang a banner when the time comes. Something about preparing to win, not just wanting to win, and all that.

Everyone agrees winning games is what matters. Landing good players helps you win games. That's why commitments are worth celebrating.
