It's quite likely that the extra year of eligibility plus the change to the transfer portal will hurt the recruitment of players like this. Right now IU doesn't have a lot of scholarships to hand out for this class. They currently have 2 open and no seniors as far as eligibility is concerned. Depending on who they use those 2 scholarships on this year (or if they don't use them), they'll have 0-2 scholarships available for the '22 class.

There will probably be transfers out of the program but that is hard to plan for. Will the coaching staff take the Crean approach and over-sign or will they wait for the spring and just try to replace though the portal? Either way, I think only the top candidates get scholarship offers from IU and, while he sounds like a solid player, I don't think that includes Smith.

I would imagine some 4th year seniors will choose to either try to go pro or play their 5th years elsewhere. But you’re right - there are a lot more factors and moving parts than in the past that can be hard to plan for.

Honest question I don’t know the answer to:

With NIL going into affect, will this shady underbelly seize to exist in a few years? I know this is more serious, but kinda like the too many text messages thing?

I guess what I mean is that it will still be shady, but the appeal of bribes loses it’s luster if CBB players can legitimately earn money through endorsements. Why do something illegally if you can do it legally?

There will always be the illegal market even with NIL in effect. I think it’s going in the right direction where players can earn money off of their own likeness, but I can see scenarios where it can still get shady and a company or booster could essentially bribe a player to go to a certain school.

  3. It’s hard to be patient, but don’t be surprised if these decisions drag out for a little bit. These guys are making huge decisions about a situation they didn’t sign up for. Those that want to stay and coach Woodson things can help the team will stay, the guys who want to move on will go elsewhere, and hopefully CMW will find great replacements in the portal.

Are their going to be AAU events this summer?  Haven’t we not officially hired an assistant before so he wouldn’t be limited to the days he attended? If there are no AAU events, there is no point, but if there is I wonder if we might try that again.

Seems like there should be AAU events this summer, just because everyone should have access to the vaccine by May. But I’m just speculating.

Doesn't seem like it to me...

I've never seen a fan base continually bash their own team like this one does...

Come on, @BGleas... You played... You know sometimes your the windshield and sometimes your the bug...

    Rutgers proved that tonight...

but everything doesn't have to lead to IU/Archie bashing. I came here to talk about Rutgers/Nebraska and the difference the removal of one bad apple can have on a team, and immediately get that we're the only team Rutgers can beat...

    It's old...

I’m sure part of it is how closely we all follow IU. I would bet fans of other schools are this passionate and irrational too, but we just don’t see it.

This might not have anything to do with Holtman, might just be the kid's nature or it could be the atmosphere Holtman has created, but I watched the beginning of their game during last week and their guard, Jackson I think, was jumping up and down after the lineup announcements and ran up and down the bench hugging each coach as he went onto the floor for the tip-off.

That kid was amped and ready to play and you could tell he loved the staff and loved just being there.

Since Archie got here, our guys look like they couldn't care less as they get ready to play.

I'm ready for a return to actual enthusiasm and energy.

I think atmosphere is the right word here. He creates an atmosphere with his players that is conducive to winning. His players look confident and comfortable on the court.

It gets old being everyone else's streak buster. Not sure if we play down to a team that we perceive is weak at the time, but this team needs to learn to crush their spirits early in the game and keep them down.

I think we allow teams to get comfortable and build confidence
