  1. I don't remember Woodson as a player even counting his NBA days. I'm 43 so I'm too young to remember his days at IU since I was just a baby/toddler then. But I was watching sports by the late 80s and don't remember him from then. Out of curiosity since you mentioned them, did you ask the player who the coaches of Alabama and Arkansas are? I mean, if a D1 recruit doesn't know those then we're no worse off than any school not named Duke, UK, or UNC. That also means that higher someone else from our list of home run hires probably wouldn't have had automatic name recognition either.
  2. This article makes a good point about why Woodson might fail. The recruiting and dealing with college students has been my largest concern with this hire. I think Matta can help with some of this and can at least help Woodson prepare to deal with the rest. https://sports.yahoo.com/opinion-mike-woodson-rude-awakening-230859190.html
  3. I get what you're saying and you're not wrong. However, the kids want to play in the NBA and even if they have to google him to find out who he is I'm pretty sure his long track record of coaching will probably be enough to get them to at least listen to his pitch. Plus, this hire has been talked about on national sports shows so I'm sure most of them have at minimum a slight idea of who he is by now. Whether it works out well enough to create some recruiting momentum before he has to prove it by winning games remains to be seen. I guess Washington might be the first chance Woodson to land a big in-state recruit.
  4. I'm aware that Matta (and Brown if added) will not be coaching. I'm sure the kids still know who Matta is. I'm sure they know who Brown is. They can help sell the university to the kids on visits. And having two very knowledgeable ex-coaches to turn to for advice couldn't hurt. Especially when one is in the HOF and won championships at both the college and professional levels.
  5. It is but it's because of his total and complete lack of college basketball coaching. I literally have no idea what we'll get with him. Matta and Brown, on the other hand, do have histories at this level. Very good histories. For me, it's not so much the assistants or the other personnel themselves that could get me excited. It's more that we bring in this guy who is well respected in the NBA who then acknowledges that he is missing key knowledge and experience for coaching at the college level. He then does what he can to immediately remedy that. It's looking more like "I want to win and win soon" rather than "I'll eventually figure it out and then win." He also realizes that not everyone knows who he is but someone like Brown would have name recognition. So I get what you're saying but I think it's kind of exciting because he wants to win soon. And the commitment from the AD to make a new position for Matta to help ensure it happens then maybe another new position for Brown. It just seems like there is more of a commitment to winning and doing it soon than there has been since Knight was here. That's even if the initial hiring appeared uninspiring. We might start landing a bunch of the top players that have been targeted recently but missed. Or we may not. If we don't, it certainly looks like it won't be for lack of effort. Another thing is that since I have absolutely no say in the matter and Woodson is already a done deal to IU I'm not going to fight it at this time, especially before he's even coached a single game. I'll give him some time before I start complaining. You're less than thrilled by this hire. I get that. I just think if he surrounds himself with the right people it could work out, and earlier rather than later. Wither or not it does remains to be seen.
  6. With Matta already in the fold (at least partially Woodson's idea) and Brown a possibility for another non-assistant coach role, I'm kind of excited to see who he actually brings in as assistants. His age, lack of college coaching experience, and not great overall record as an NBA head coach (yes, yes, I know about getting better year after year blah, blah, blah, but also heard that about Miller) I was disappointed about the hire initially. Now I've moved past that to where I'm neutral on it. But I'm starting to get excited because it looks like he is attempting to put together a stacked group of assistant coaches and support/advisory staff.
  7. So we may have Matta and Brown as support staff? That's good stuff. Maybe this time really will be different.
  8. I was hoping he would hire an assistant coach that is big into analytics. If they can just make a new position and hire another person for that in addition to assistant coaches, that would be even better.
  9. Yep. Dolson and the donor were ready to spend that money just to get rid of the worst coach in IU history.
  10. You were passing on what you were hearing. You trusted your sources. They probably believed what they were telling you. It's unfortunate that it appears to be bad info but I see no wrongdoing and still thank you for passing on the info you were getting.
  11. At least Miller had the decency to really bomb while at IU and we're not stuck with fool's gold like OSU with Holtmann.
  12. You fixed it! Good job, I'm glad it's back up. Now let's get Stevens hired.
  13. At very least, 5 teams from multi-bid conferences. Teams from single bid conferences will be replaced by another team from that conference so that wouldn't help IU. Realistically, it's way more than 5.
  14. Well, they were mentioned*, but no. *The mention was IU's 1976 team being the last undefeated with Gonzaga having a chance to be the next.
  15. The 3 games they didn't make up are PSU, IU, and Northwestern. Do you think they lose any of those games? The only thing we're seeing now is that it was agreed upon before the season. You seem to think that wasn't the case. If it wasn't, why wouldn't your AD be saying so?
  16. Last year we tied for 10th but lost the tiebreaker so had the 11th seed in the BTT. This year it will be 10th seed. As the Miller supporters tell us, we're improving. That's improvement!
  17. To me it's at the bottom. But it does have a Day 1 bye in the BTT... so maybe bottom of the middle? 🤷‍♂️
  18. I think the 1st tiebreaker is head-to-head and we beat them in the only game this season. So even if PSU wins today (doubtful), IU should have the 10th seed and PSU 11th. Kind of like IU and PU last season except IU winning the tiebreaker. Minnesota is done playing so they can't get to 7 wins. Even if they had, IU was 1-0 against them, as well. I think 10th place and 10th seed are locked up.
  19. I saw he was 12-19 overall in that game so the worst possible 3 point shooting for this game would've been 9-16 (56%) if he was 3-3 inside the arc.
  20. That's what you'll get when you have players who never unpack their bags on the way to the NBA and then have a bad season. There's really no reason for someone that isn't emotionally bought in to continue to risk injury that could effect future earnings. I'll be surprised if this is the last player from Duke and UK that quits before the season ends.
  21. Players IU recruits can be overhyped and it remains to be seen how well Kaufman will play at the college level but he should fall into the "pretty good" to "great" college player range. He's similarly ranked (247 composite) to TJD coming out of HS (TJD 30 rating 0.9890, Kaufman 32 rating 0.9872). A bit smaller than TJD coming out of HS but he does have a more versatile offensive game. I haven't seen Kaufman play so I don't know about other aspects such as quickness compared to TJD. He should be a good player, though, and losing him hurt. Particularly losing him to Purdue.
