That would be a pretty huge jump for a guy with a very low usage rate at a mid major. But it could happen.
Ironic, isn't having Leal committed one of the reasons IU didn't offer Goode out of HS?
its not hard to find irony. Kinda like I'm sure Illinois passed on a guy who could have played all of last season, but instead picked up Shannon instead.

IF Goode commits (haven’t seen anything definitive) would that crack open the door of recruiting Ft Wayne?
would it help any more than Matt Roth being a head coach in Fort Wayne? probably too de minimis

I wouldn’t complain. We have a need for his position. He has seemed to regress the past year or two but I think he would be serviceable for the spot we need filled. Odds are slim tho so I won’t get my hopes up
I'm not so sure it's regressing as much as it how much and what Purdue needed him to do.

locking that in?

Think we are a little gun shy because we heard a few other names as “locked” already and understandably they weren’t. With him you have to think a back up 5 will probably wrap things up….we would have 10 deep with a 6th year senior, a kid coming off major injuries, and likely yet another unused scholarship as the final 3. Perhaps you find a kid just willing to come for the check and be break glass if emergency 4/5 as well.
I don’t recall anyone locking someone that hasn’t committed… I recall them saying the visits went really well.
but my main thought was… this isn’t even an insider on a board. This is a verified twitter account saying he has committed when no one else has. Even the massive unverified IU fan accounts are hush. -

Not sure I know what you are asking, but I am saying players leaving a program before mid-year because they are dissatisfied on how they are being used is happening more frequently. Because of this, I think it is smart to fully staff your team. You have to expect the unexpected. Players leave, they get hurt, they don't develop how you expect. Take a flyer on raw player, a player that has the skills, but not the build/athleticism. But don't leave a spot open for the sake of leaving a spot open.
I think the chance of a player leaving mid-season versus transferring in are far greater, so I would not leave the scholly open for that, if that is the counter.
no counter. I just dont really recall more than maybe 5 kids transferring mid-season this year.

Not to mention, transferring mid-season isn't the oddity it once was. Combine that with injuries and your team can get small really quick.

If coach and player will are on the same page, yes.
A player gets a chance to prove himself and make some money in a big time program. The team gets an insurance policy (in case of injuries) and another body in practice to up the competition.
i see this as win win.
I see that as a win win for the player. Sounds like a favor type of scholarship. Season is already down the drain if the player is needed. Still lost games, but at least the kid made some NIL money and went to school for free.
I am absolutely not against using it. Take a flyer on someone, but all scholarships don't need to be filled just to fill them for the optics to appease the fan base.

My issue was after you evaluated Cupps, Gunn, Leal, and Banks... then knew Newton wasn't playing this year--- you still didn't fill the scholly. That's stupid.
And it's optics more than anything else.
The staff probably knew sooner, but it wasn't really official until August, I believe, that Newton was going to be out for the majority of the season.

Never know how injuries will play out or how all the newcomers will do.
Everyone on this board likely wished we had another guard on this team last season instead of an empty seat.
It works both ways. Just because we want another guard doesn't mean there is one interested in coming. 2 Gabe Cupps would not have helped this team last year.
12 minutes ago, tdhoosier said:Why? What about another body in practice. Sure, the attitude needs to fit, but I don’t understand why coaches wouldn’t fill all spots on their roster. Transferring is a 2 way street now. And whether we like to admit it or not, rosters are getting ‘creaned’. A spot for unnamed 24/25 guy is not going to be taken up by 13th guy on a roster.
There’s also ample NIL opportunities here outside of collectives. Just imagine how Priller would’ve cleaned up in tshirt revenue. Hell, I’d buy a ‘Priller the Thriller’ right now if it was available.
So let me get this straight. you would sign a guy fully knowing you are going to kick him out the door next year? so really you are using a scholarship for a single year for someone that will not get a single minute of playing time... just to say you used the scholarship?
I already said they could make some money via NIL.
Just because you have a scholarship available doesn't mean you walk to the rec center and offer a kid that made 10 free throws in a row. There still needs to be a baseline level of talent/potential. You don't just use it to use it.

we don't need to to keep an open scholarship. pick up a sleeper to take a shot on if nothing else.
It's gotta be with someone that has some semblance of talent or potential. I dont want to go offer the last scholarship(s) just to use them. I think it will be difficult to fill up the last scholarships... assuming Goode is onboard. The only thing to offer now is a bit of money and maybe 10-15 minutes at the 4-5?

Orlando's pretty good at coaching up the big fellas, too.
You really think that "network" is not longer important? 🤣

Newton got to practice a decent amount plus sit and learn and I think he explosive like Rice and Carlyle m. If he is confident and not scared of hurting his knee and is comfortable in the system he could be a player. It’s not like he was a 3 star coming in. If I remember correctly he also has a big wing span.

I find this really weird how you are baggin on the guys coming here call it a done deal to IU. Then turn around and say "this one is over." because of a crystal ball prediction.

Not a lot, but Purdue had five: Smith, Loyer, Gillis, Colvin & Heide
What good is a 40% shooter if they don’t shoot. How many of those averaged more than 4 attempts a game.
And if all you need are 40% 3 pt shooters to win, why didn’t Gillis, Colvin, and Heide play more?- 1
